It's all awful. In terms of thinking about solutions, though, one can meaningfully divide the stories into segments: (a) life in Mexico/Central America and the impact of NAFTA; (b) difficulties of getting into the US; (c) aggressiveness of immigration enforcement; (d) detention conditions prior to deportation; (e) deportation. Item (d) is perhaps the lowest hanging fruit, and is most independent of all the others; followed by (c), which is at least executive and immediate.
Focus on (a) and (b) maybe risks inducing compassion fatigue. Maybe I'm just a hard case unimaginative.
I have friends whose church is really active in providing water in the desert. Such a ridiculous kind of band aid -- and yet -- it's necessary.
