Penn Station? In De Blasio's New York? That's where the living especially envy the dead!
But I think I may be able to make it.
I'm all for it, but I'm going to be resorting to Yelp to suggest a nearby venue.
I was going to suggest Fresh Salt, but I looked at a map instead. It's probably too far.
American Whiskey is nearby and adequate. Or there is the legendary Tracks, inside Penn Station.
I may de lurk and join.
Admittedly, I haven't been to the Blarney Rock since 1994, and the main features that recommended the place in 1994 were that it was (1) across the street from the Hotel Pennsylvania and (2) willing to serve underage people. But it is _definitely_ a bar.
I was going to say I knew one place nearby, Heartland Brewery, before remembering that it was inside Port Authority and not Penn Station. I had a recollection of meeting friends for dinner and drinks somewhere near Penn Station once, but my old emails say that I said there was nothing near Penn Station and we met them in Hell's Kitchen instead.
I was in NY for a day trip a couple months ago and got back to Penn early, we got some beers at some outdoor bar on the next block north, I forget what it was called, but it was decent if pretty standard. There are a bunch of faux-Irish bars on 8th Ave in either direction.
I think they like to be called "Scots Irish."
I think they should rename the place "American Whisky" but I might like irony more than is good for me.
JM and I should be able to come by, but unfortunately won't be able to stay very long.

So, I just got a job offer. I have 24 hours to answer. What is the best thread to ask for negotiating advice in?
|>
It's arguably topical in "Whatever". And congratulations, I know you've been unhappy at your current job.
Ok, American Whiskey tomorrow at 7pm?
14: Congratulations. Hope the job is great.
It's a good job. I've been covering for someone's maternity leave, and I was offered the equivalent position working with different "internal clients".
Is that how they refer to fetuses now?
Only until quickening -- after that they're called "key stakeholders"
And if they grow up to work in a butcher shop, and they close up shop at night, they're known as "steak key holders," but that's really neither here nor there.
That's not especially bad, but somehow being the first thing you said in months makes it worse.
I couldn't think of a better semi-anonymized phrase. My "clients" are various primary care practices.
It was perfectly clear. Also, congrats.
Can someone please update that the meet-up is canceled? I could not find a parking space within several blocks of my local train station (me=livid), so there goes the trip to NYC.
I messaged Flip, Blandings, and JackM -- was there anyone else likely to show?
Sorry, J. Next time. If it's any comfort, I've met us and, you know, you can do better!
A few months ago, our man on Arrakis was talking about going falconing. The following comment came to me much too late for that thread, but Stanley's made this thread a pun thread so here it is:
"If you're still falconing after the sun goes down, watch out for kestrel manures in the dark."
The meetup doesn't have to be canceled. The regulars can all toast you in your absence.
38 not bad. Too bad I can't use that here though, I don't think anyone would get that here in Arrakis.
Barry, speaking of Arrakis, is there any chance of you starting some sort of blog/Bookface/Instagram or thingamawhatsit recording your experiences and sights there? It's nice to read your occasional comments but I would love to see more.
I can look into putting something up but I'd probably want to set it to private. Do you have an Instagram account? I think you'd need one if I did that. I'm not sure I'm ever going to do the Bookface thing. I should definitely post some pics to the Flickr pool.
