Thanks for the thread- I'll be staying near Rockefeller but I'm open to going wherever, although I did discover that the subway doesn't really go to the upper east side.
Oh, hey. Upper east side is Blandings/Jackm's neighborhood -- I don't know a good spot there, but they might. And you're looking for the 6 train, which is on Lexington. They've been putting a new line in on 2d Avenue since the seventies, and it should be done any day now.
Fresh Salt would be inconvenient for ME.
I don't yet know where I'm staying, though, actually. I could possibly get there. I dunno. I dunno, man.
But have you ever been to Fresh Salt, nosflow? I mean, have you ever really been to Fresh Salt?
Apparently I am staying in Hell's Kitchen.
I have never been to Fresh Salt!
(I will point out, as usual, that Fresh Salt is not a particularly remarkable bar. We've usually been able to find places to sit, and it's convenient for my office, but it's not a tourist attraction in itself.)
(Although it is easily reached by the 4/5 from the Upper East Side (which is the express version of the 6), and the A from Hell's Kitchen.)
It's a long way from not-California Oakland.
If you were committed to your responsibilities as a commenter, you'd show up anyway.
I do look for reasons to go to New York, but it's really inconveniently located.
Google maps thinks Fresh Salt is like 36 minutes from my hotel! The balance being walking thence to the subway station, apparently.
The parts of the east coast that aren't near the ocean have poor rail service.
That's plausible, it's not all that close to the subway stop on this end. Maybe a ten minute walk? That seems high, but could be.
I wonder if I can get anything comped at Le Bernadin on the strength of being my sister's brother. Probably not.
Would it be ill advised to CitiBike to it?
You should ride Citibike to the meet up.
Not remotely. They're not great bikes, but you probably didn't expect them to be.
I used the system in London last year and got a moderately nonfunctional one 1 out of 5 rides. But then you just trade for a working one.
I wonder if I can get anything comped at Le Bernadin on the strength of being my sister's brother. Probably not.
If you can, see if you can then stretch it to certain of your internet acquaintances.
I will review options closer to Rockefeller with JM.
We don't really have any good ideas for up this way, and I tend to expect UES bars to generally be loud and Chetty. I suppose the new incarnation of the Subway Inn could be a possibility, but we haven't been there so can't confirm. Does that leave us with Fresh Salt? We're happy to travel anywhere.
I'm on third world high speed rail heading down. Anything is fine with me, I'm free from 5pm on.
I likely won't be free until around 8.
SP is going to be really drunk by the time you get there.
I hate to say this, but I spent the day at home yesterday vomiting. I'm at work today, but I'm expecting to head home early, and I'm almost certainly not going to be up for going out.
If I perk up some during the course of the day, maybe, but other that, sorry to miss everyone.
If you like squalor, sure. I'm not sure that all the vomit is cleaned out of the bathroom; I was feeling pretty rocky while I was cleaning up after myself. And you probably won't catch anything if you stick to hard liquor, given its disinfecting properties.
The hard liquor discussion is in the other thread.
[ Fresh Salt is ] not a tourist attraction in itself
At this point it sort of is.
I'm surey hotel has a bar. Everyone should come to me.
Surely you have better pickup lines than that.
indeed. But LB can't make it anyway, and why waste gold on dross?
Woohoo! Live blog! Though I'll probably be asleep by then. And I wish I was there. 32 is true btw.
Actually, I'm feeling enough better that if I don't collapse again over the course of the afternoon, I might make it out for a seltzer.
Plop, plop, fizz, fizz.
Oh, let us go see Liz.
Consulting work done. Debating biking down or walking 4 blocks to the subway. Apparently it is going to rain soon so I'm thinking subway.
Oh look my hotel room has an umbrella in the closet. Someone please remind me to remember it when we're done or it will cost me $35.
That's actually very useful, for a hotel.
Very much doubt I'll be able to make it.
An hour after landing, still at the airport. Did you know it's raining?
Woohoo! Liveblogging! Fresh Salt! I wish I were there.
I am sitting on a train. Across from me is an ad for the museum of sex, which I thought was in Berlin.
Did I ever tell that I was asked on a date to go to the Museum of Tolerance in LA?
I am standing in an open field west of a white house, with a boarded front door. There is a small mailbox here.
60: you are likely to be eaten by a grue
Oddly enough, "May I be the first to suggest Fresh Salt" has only three ghits.
Not so oddly, I can't get FF to remember my personal info here. The program loves to block cookies. Must be creeping Halfordismo.
I'm back at my hotel, but if you want to meet me at the bar, I'll buy you a drink neb.
Well, I'm sorry I missed what I assume was or would have been a fun gathering.
I was there, briefly and soberly.
JM tried to pass off an IPA as a ginger ale but LB was all over that trick.
Why did you tell Blandings that an IPA was a ginger aile?
My husband has an extra ticket for NY Comic Con tomorrow, $50. Anyone want it?
It's a daytime thing, right? I am tempted, but really shouldn't.
Yep, daytime. You should totally do it.
I'm not actually a fan though, as defined by Comicon standards. Meaning, I like stuff in these genres, but I don't exactly keep up with them.
Not even remotely an issue. The point is to go and enjoy the spectacle and the cosplay and the toys.
One ticket only though? I think not this year for me, then.
62: Canonically, it's "Let me be the first...", but that also has just three hits.
Yeah. A friend of his got sick and can't make it. Tickets are becoming increasingly difficult to get each year, though, so this might be your best bet if you're interested. Shoot me an e-mail if you change your mind!
Probably I should wait until Blandingson is old enough to go, as he is more interested in this sort of thing than Blandings is.
