Definitely a good song to play during office hours, while giving back rubs to confused undergrads.
I think this is the appropriate place to mention that earlier today at work I came across a name that is the coolest I've ever seen: Don Juan Van Halen, the author of the" Narrative of Don Juan Van Halen's Imprisonment in the Dungeons of the Inquisition at Madrid, and His Escape in 1817 and 1818: To which are Added, His Journey to Russia, His Campaign with the Army of the Caucasus, and His Return to Spain in 1821".
Stepping out to catch the Coen brothers latest .
the real question is how do we feel about the 90s song sampling this one, in which IIRC coolio gets followed by a winding wick flaring from one lover to another and so on, which was a metaphor for AIDS. I mean, it was a bad song so we're all probably feeling the same thing. only situation with greater potential lost was some dumbass sampling "hollywood swinging" for that "money" track that created an event horizon of suck based on a killer riff.
Oh hey Alameida, just started planning a quick long weekend trip to Narnia with Chani to catch part of the Hou Hsiao-Hsien retro. Will you be around? May drop you a line soon.
5: Have you seen The Assassin? Is it better than it has to be for an excuse to watch Shu Qi for 2 hours?
6: No. Stultifying. And I watch "slow cinema" even Lav Diaz
Mountains May Depart instead.
To put it another way Assassin gets a 6.5 at IMDB, and Hou's previous 6 movies all got 7.0 or above.
In arthouse auteur language, where we usually blame ourselves for not liking a movie, it's an absolute dog.
Bob's wrong. The Assassin is beautiful and I thought it was great though it's still far from being my favorite Hou. Caught it twice at the Dubai film festival.
And Shu Qi is wonderful in Hou'sMillenium Mambo, a really great film.
MM and Three Times are both very good
In a review related to the above disagreement Ted Gioia writer about jazz explains why Jose Ortega y Gasset remains relevant to our age. Read it around 1980. Very short book, but dense.
"The key driver of change, as Ortega sees it, comes from a shocking attitude characteristic of the modern age--or, at least, Ortega was shocked. Put simply, the masses hate experts. If forced to choose between the advice of the learned and the vague impressions of other people just like themselves, the masses invariably turn to the latter. The upper elite still try to pronounce judgments and lead, but fewer and fewer of those down below pay attention."
Of course, Ortega was writing in 1929, and what has changed is that not only has expertise been devalued in favor of raw tribalism, but there is also no longer any authority or legitimacy to be found in the masses, majority consensus or the "wisdom of crowds."
