I thought the inside of the nose was self-cleaning.
Just kidding. My hair is radiant. But after 8pm or so would work best. And what part of town?
4 was to 1. Parts of town, I dunno, man
4 is the emoticon for "me inside your vagina."
Also, neb, you're a little bitch for not capitalizing the "southern" in "Southern California."
You know, if you're having a dissociative episode, you can probably talk to the boot camp people and get some kind of extension.
Hitler was in the old days, you monster.
I appreciate what you're doing, ogged, but surely you remember that "giving ogged a hard time" was part of the good old days, too.
Alas, I will be leaving the Southwest the previous morning. (It would be invidious to suggest that neb has timed his visit accordingly.)
I'm older and thin-skinned, maybe. Also, one wonders, in bootcamp, how much one really enjoys front-end development. I am really enjoying the mapping, though.
I sometimes wonder if anyone really enjoys front-end development.
Oh, so now you want to go to a Los Angeles meetup.
I could probably do Monday the 28th, too. 8:00ish would be perfect, regardless of location.
Ok, lets follow Nosflow's interests and the place he's urging in email to go. Jumbo's Clown Room*, 9pm on the 18th. Lurkers welcome, let's get weird.
Probably unlike with JMQ my mom wouldn't come to a Jumbos Clown Room meetup, but I've been told to keep nosflow away from moms.
Serious proposals for location are also welcome
The only thing I remember from Los Angeles is the tar pits. Maybe they have a cafe?
Hi! I'd like to attend! Maybe this time I actually will. Jumbo's Clown Room is pretty loud. The bar at Taix?
I've heard good things about the bar at Taix!
In case you want to have a dinner meetup, let me be the first to recommend Bestia.
Ich bin die letzte Bestie am Firmament
Halt mich fest
Halt mich fest
in der Himmelsmitte
The bar at Taix works for us, but does it really close at 10 on Mondays, like it says on Yelp?
What about the bar at Cliff's Edge, which is also quiet but open 'til midnight?
Around 1:00am closing time on Mondays, says the person on the other end of the phone at Taix. I trust that response 7 on a 10 scale.
If in fact it's wrong, we could certainly start there and migrate somewhere else regardless.
Since I will have to drive back to "the OC", it doesn't behoove me to get trashed anyway.
If you don't mind nonconsensual groping, you're welcome to crash at our house for the night. We have an extra bed.
Oh wait, that night we don't. But we have a spare couch, and all the creepy feelings you can handle.
Plus there's a waitress at Taix, or at least there was, who honestly is your soulmate.
Am I being groped or doing the groping?
37. The messy blonde? That might be true.
38 - kinda depends on how the night goes.
I'm PRETTY SURE my soulmate isn't blonde but I'm willing to investigate this matter.
I see they serve beef tongue on mondays. This is getting better and better.
hey I may have to be in southern California next week!
You can come and steal Nosflow's soulmate
ha! I'm more likely to help soulmateness blossom between others. I've got form doing so!
It's unlikely my potential trip down south would coincide usefully with meet up plans but the possibility it might takes the depressing edge off what will be a dreary trip.
Setting distant Barry up with his divine lover while I languish alone is the very definition of "telescopic philanthropy" (even if I was not alone at the time of the setting-up).
Is this the taix resto in silverlake? Looks like a hotbed of Basque deliciousness!
Technically Echo Park I believe.
No one should ever rely on me to find anything in LA or hell SF for that matter. So who knows if I'll get lost on the way but looks like I will indeed be in LA Monday evening.
I heard there's a park with rained on cake.
If you swing by our place in Pasadena, I can give you a sticker for free admission to the Huntington.
If you want coffee plus an interesting meal/pastry, Sqirl in East Hollywood is great. Proof in Atwater Village is also terrific for coffee/pastry, but neither place is really big enough for longer term hanging out. Both Jones and Jameson Brown Coffee Roasters in Pasadena are interesting and have more space, particularly if you end up doing the Huntington thing.
Alternatively, maybe you'd be interested in something like an architectural walking tour downtown? Or the new Mapplethorpe exhibit at LACMA?
Pedal boat in Echo Park lake is always fun. You can put a photo of a girl next to you and pretend it's romantic. The time travel mart is a little twee but fun. Up Echo Park Blvd to Vetnamese cake factory, tiny hipster grocery, coffee shop and old wooden church. Baxter Street stairs are awesome. Up Stadium Way to the greatest place on earth, Dodger Stadium, then over to the frisbee golf course or the Police Academy with its restaurant. Or just down Sunset which stays very interesting in both directions.
Those are all things within a (sometimes long-ish) walk of Taix's parking lot and all free.
Sqirl in East Hollywood is great
I can confirm this! I missed Dodger Stadium, so now I have to go back to that urban hellhole during baseball season.
Also, Trois Familia, a great French-Mexican breakfast/brunch place on Sunset.
Actual short walking distance from Echo Park would be the echo park lake for walking.
Coffee within short walking distance:
Blue Bottle (no wifi)
Andante Coffee Roasters
Woodcat
If you check out the Baxter stairs (might be a bit of a long walk) then Fix Coffee is a block away from them and has good coffee and food. The Vietnamese cake factory R Tigre mentioned is also up that way and has great banh mi.
Sunset Beer Co. has crazy selection of bottles and happy hour 4-7 means you can buy bottles and drink them in their pub area for no bottle-opening fee. I go there to look for obscure beers that I can't find in the supermarkets.
Sqirl and Trois Familia are both great but definitely more than pleasant walking distance.
Uh, I meant to say that Sqirl and Trois Familia are a less than pleasant long walk from Taix.
It would be hilarious to go from SF to LA and then get coffee at Blue Bottle.
My plan goes something like spend day in loooooong meeting, duck in to various offices to say hi to colleagues, somehow manage to dash across town to perfume shop, back to hotel and then off to echo lake area on bus. We'll see how it goes!
The Huntington appears to close at 4:30 which means (given possible travel times) I'd likely have to leave here quite early, so I'm not sure it's worth it (though it does look awesome).
The Huntington is one of my favorite places.
It was during an afternoon scroll through the grounds, if I recall correctly, that you first caught sight of, and engaged in conversation, the woman who is now your wife.
And in the same place, on the same day, in the sly shade of a Chinese Wingnut, made her my wife.
Is the Huntington open Mondays now? I thougt there was a day when they closed to the public.
It was during an afternoon scroll through the grounds
I like the idea of ogged looking at an online satellite map of the Huntington, scrolling through the grounds and spotting his lady.
I really like the Huntington. That's a sweet story.
dq, luckyscent scentbar? I just made a visit last week. Anything in particular purchase planned, or are you just sniffing through the goods?
I really like the Huntington. That's a sweet story.
It is, I am sad to admit, lies.
From the "tautology" line of scents.
That scent is totally the film that turned out to be a bimonthly curated box of snacks in Bojack Horseman.
73: For the ladies, relative to other dating sites, that one would what, triple your odds of ending up at the bottom of a well in a basement?
68:yes! Mostly a browse although hoping to snag some knize 10 soap for a drawer.
67: It's open Mondays, closed on Tuesdays.
Let me know if you change your mind, nosflow. As others attest, the Huntington is in fact extremely awesome in a variety of ways. You can do a lot in only an hour, and the free-ticket offer stands.
Ah, I just remember going there for research and having to show my researcher ID to get in one day a week.
What ID does it take to get in two days a week?
None, unless one of those days is Tuesday.
55: The Noir exhibition at the Getty is pretty good, I was there last week.
It is, isn't it! I love exhibits that emphasize the technology of whatever medium, and I thought it did a nice job on the changing uses of charcoal. The Louis XIV tapestry exhibit is pretty great too.
I can also confirm 81. The tar pits are also pretty noir.
I assume there is some non-shitty area of lax and I just never happen to pass through it. What a pit.
The international terminal's not bad from what I recall.
73:
"According to the Portuguese merchant and travel writer Duarte Barbosa, who visited in 1610, twelve of the most attractive young women from every part of the realm were sent to the palace on a regular basis, not in the first instance to meet the king, but to stand, bully dressed in the hear, on a 'terrace in the sun'. They would then take off their clothes, and the 'damp cloth' they had been wearing (with their names scribbled on them) would be sent for His Majesty to sniff. Only those who passed this scent test would be invited into the royal apartments, The rest would be proffered to lesser lords"
Surely an important refinement of Halfordismo.

Wow: CA is likely to pass timed yearly minimum wage increases reaching $15 in 2022, and inflation-adjusted thereafter.

mission accomplished: free parking without a time limit.
The 14 is a wonderful cross-town ride. And I like how the schedule incorporates opportunities for the driver to pick up snacks along the way. But this driver might want to back off as he's got a bit of a paunch going there. And I don't like that I didn't get a transfer. Like a proof of payment dude.
Mission (probably for the best) not accomplished: shmancy boutique not actually open.
The schmancy schop I am in is open and all the other clients are dudes. I like LA. 😊
Pick me up a winning scent-sample, why doncha?
Have various things sprayed on flesh but alas just left and am back on bus. Sorry! Will see if I have anything fun lurking in bottom of ditty bag.
My natural odor will have to suffice for the wooing of my messy soulmate.
There us a Korean BBQ named Toad House. I am so happy.
And the recording of the guy telling us to watch our step when exiting sounds oddly human and a bit menacing actually, there's this little pause after "watch your step ...". I like it!
A woman giving Italian instruction to a man at Fix has illustrated the concept of the infinitive (or as she puts it, infinite verbs) with "to have sex", and then remarked of the expression "you slept there" that "that's what you say to your boyfriend when you've found out he's cheating on you".
The Italians are noted for their calm about such things.
I have recently spent painful time attempting to register the kid with CNED so he can take the bac option in Italian. Their website gives the PFA's a run for world's most infuriatingly crappy labyrinthine and generally atrocious.
I think he is still to young to study with that woman, though.
I thought you were all about giving him a properly European education.
Looking like I won't be there until 9 or a little after. You guys can do jaeger shots until then.
On my way! Zero clue when I'll be there.
I, a believer in punctuality, am across the street.
It seems that no one else (whom I would recognize) is here, and I don't want to sit at the bar by my lonesome for untold periods.
neb, tell Lubbock to hurry back to Cincinnati, where the cooler people are. (And I'm there too, though not at the moment.)
"neb and Stranded spent the first hour glumly sitting separately in the same room."
I've now caught up with the facts related above. Also, dq is here. Jms's whereabouts are unknown.
Jms and k-sky are here and dq and Stranded in Lubbock are talking about clams who dictate legal arguments.
The dimensions of the clams were. It specified to my knowledge.
I'm about 5 mins away, get your makeup right while you can
Everyone was lovely and I'm now on a bus back downtown.
Nosflow and DQ suspiciously went missing at the end of the night together. I have retired to my luxury auto like a boss
Am already back at hotel, regally alone.
Woohoo! Very nice to see everyone, as always.
Thanks for making it happen, nosflow, despite your and dq's swift and surreptitious departure at the end.
Thorn, there will be no hurrying back to Cincinnati, as you well know, but we certainly do miss you.
From my perspective it was you all who disappeared!
124: Sorry about that. We did wait for you in both the hall and parking lot, but you must have gone out some other entrance already.
123.last: I know, I know. I've just been spoiled by having friends nearby. I'm sure you're enjoying and making good use of LA!
Apologies for any rudeness, there was this bus stop across the street that lured me.
Not rude at all, just reminiscent of that time Nosflow got drunk with Ted Cruz and they left the bar together, and we all know how that turned out.
I (and dq) left via the entrance we used to, well, enter. I didn't even know there was another entrance.
and we all know how that turned out.
I send md 20/400 a check in the mail.
This is a good variant on Colossal Cave.
130: Total agreement with every aspect of 129. Not rude at all, just momentarily confusing, which is apt for a place that seemed to nest restaurants within restaurants like matryoshka dolls.
