Great, great find. The interview and the song both.
They didnt have to bc the money's in publishing, losers.*
Nb. Have not seen the video.
Nb. Not that much money.
They did some records for "the Columbia, I think it was."
Thanks for posting this.
I think next year Nia will be old enough to join Appalachian lap dulcimer club and maybe I can talk the teacher who runs it into letting Mara in too. My mom's doing better than I am at making sure they learn folk tunes by playing the same records I listened to as a kid, but they learn a little in school. I should ask if they know The Cuckoo. I don't think so.
This really is great, though, as everyone has said.
I think my favorite bit is "They was just lookin' for something and hopin' they'd find it."
Also: apparently the first "hillbilly" band broke into showbiz because the father of one of them was a doctor in DC? Same as it ever was.
Thanks for the video, very neat to see video of Clarence Ashley.
By the way, I do recommend for anybody interested in traditional music to see Jeff Warner if you have a chance. He's the son of two folklorists involved in collecting traditional Appalachian music. He's an excellent performer himself, and very knowledgeable, and he also recently* compiled 2 CDs of material from his parent's recordings.
