I was going to sign it, but I didn't want to give them my email address.
Also, this was already linked in the Alaska/Purim thread.
I doubt if this petition was started by Republicans, or signed by many of them. I signed in the hope that there wii be a massive shootout during which the supporters of each candidate will attempt to take out all the opposing candidates.
Should I be posting this on Standpipe's blog?
I think it's probably half Republicans, half saboteurs. I mean, the Republicans do have an honest to god insurgency on their hands, and this is exactly the kind of thing they get het up over.
It's really great trolling. Everything in the petition is dead accurate.
By "dead accurate", I assume you mean "from the perspective of a republican nut job"? Because this doesn't strike me as in any way accurate:
By forcing attendees to leave their firearms at home, the RNC and Quicken Loans Arena are putting tens of thousands of people at risk both inside and outside of the convention site
It's one of those areas where satire and fanaticism are pretty different to tell apart.
I have mixed feeling about this. On the one hand, they really do deserve this. On the other hand, I'm not sure a bloodbath at the republican convention would ultimately be good for the country. And on top of that, there could easily *not* be a bloodbath, in which case this might end up just furthering the ridiculous idea that we should let people have guns everywhere and always. The fanatics might think their point had been proven.
"Dead accurate" from the perspective of people who argue against gun free zones, a set that includes all current candidates for the Republican nomination.
Everything is better with set theory.
They have no guns and enough cash to pay hookers. Great return on investment.
11, 12: I hope I am not the only one in whom that inspired an image of Lyndon Johnson wandering the Capitol, stealing Republicans' campaign contributions. "Why are you hitting yourself, nerd? Stop hitting yourself! Stop hitting yourself!"
What I mean in 8 is that I would to see this get enough attention to cause the maximum amount of public discomfort for the RNC consistent with not actually having them cave and allow guns at the convention. Because that would be a bad result. But their getting publicly and repeatedly pressed on the point is a good result.
6: I'm pretty sure those are real arguments. I've heard that in other contexts. You're a sitting duck if a bad guy knows that guns aren't allowed where you're at.
There is no way they will allow guns. The Secret Service may talk too much to Colombian prostitutes, but they know their business.
16: By "their business", do you mean "spending money on Colombian prostitutes"?
And drinking. They're really good at that.
The Colombian word for "prostitute" literally translates as "woman whose hips can lie."
On the OP, only 9,800 signatures needed to reach 50,000. Does something happen when they get to 50,000?
Another round of media coverage, probably.
For the super bowl extravaganza only unlicensed guns were banned. Along with harpoon guns, hairspray, plastic explosives and scissors. It was an eclectic list.
What is the actual law in Cleveland? Trying to adjust my expectations here.
20: I think they just have some list of general benchmarks. So until it hits 5,000 it's 'only [whatever] votes needed to reach 5,000', and then when it crosses that line it's 'only [whatever] votes needed to reach 10,000' and so on.
16: could secret service just pull out if they decide that the candidates have adequate protection via their armed delegates?
I'm really not interested in what sort of birth control strategies the Secret Service uses with their Colombian prostitutes.
So, the petition got to 50,000 and the Secret Service did reply.
