Have you ever been to PNC Park? The Pirates are playing Houston the evening of the 23rd.
I'm around.
You should get the CitiBikes equivalent and ride around the CMU area; it'll be a good way to get a feel for the environs.
ZOMG, we could get drinks in the Carnegie-era mansion where BOGF and I lived (which is now a luxe hotel). Unfogged pre-history tour!
If you're doing the Warhol, you should also do the Mattress Factory and City of Asylum.
Unless there's another family health emergency I'll be around.
Generally we recommend people not to go to Primantis until they're committed to Pgh. In terms of amenities we have but you don't, either of the Inclines will work. I like the Carnegie Museum and its awesome Hall of Architecture but that probably pales to the NYC museums. But it is convenient to both CMU and Pitt, being in between them, and you can get lunch at Conflict Kitchen, which is usually quite good.
Seconding getting CitiBikes if you're comfortable with biking (Closest stations are at Schenley Drive & Frew below Flagstaff Hill an at Fifth and Dithridge by the Mellon Institute). JRoth, was this mansion one of the fancy ones on Fifth?
That asshole Frick left he nicer art in New York and left us with some crap.
I'm still so angry I can't type.
Anyway, I should be able to make dinner on either of those nights.
5.last: Yes, the one that is now known, commercially, as The Mansions on Fifth. Originally the McCook house, IIRC Carnegie's accountant.
Just a few short years ago, Bloomfield didn't even have a hotel. Anyway, there are many places to eat within walking distance of that. What type of food do you want?
The three of us are easy. Name someplace you think the food is good.
Almost exactly 20 years ago, someone threw up on me in a horrible Pittsburgh bar called "Whiskey Dick's." You could go there.
Strip District, I think. I never went there. I'm pretty sure it's closed. Also, that it didn't allow anybody under 21 when it was open.
Well there should at least be a memorial to its vomit victims.
I probably can't make it. My cat has been very sick--we just discovered a week ago that she has cancer--and she's going in for surgery Tuesday morning. However that goes I should probably be home, despite how fun hanging out with awesome internet strangers sounds. But we'll see. Sorry.
Oh, sorry about the cat. Hopefully the surgery works.
Sorry, dalriata. I hope that goes smoothly.
And as for LB, just promise that at some point someone will get a salad with fries on it and I'll be happy.
Hope it goes well with the your cat dalriata.
I can totally talk Newt into the fries/salad.
The Elbow Room and Silky's do that. I've not seen many kids in Silky's. I haven't been to the Elbow Room since it moved back to where it used to be.
Maybe we should wait for somebody who doesn't go to the same bar and order the same thing week after week?
If only we had a restaurant critic or something.
At this point, they can both eat in a bar just fine. No one without a vision problem would sell Newt a drink, but at 6'2" no one's going to think it's a problem for him to be in a bar.
Bars here often don't let anybody under 21 inside. The smoking ones can't, by state law, but Kelly's (the modal meet-up bar so far ones I've been to) doesn't either. I'm sure Elbow Room is fine with all ages. There I was just saying that I haven't been there recently enough to know how the food is lately.
I have been wondering about the new/old Elbow Room. If you wind up there, I'd love a report!
That's so funny how different rules are state by state. The only places in NY who have a strict no one under 21 rule, so that they'd keep out a teenager with a parent, are sort of dance-clubby sorts of places. I've never seen a regular bar keep teens with adults out.
Welcome to the latest episode of "LB ventures outside her bubble and rediscovers federalism: an occasional series."
Is there a state in the US where kids with parents are not allowed in a bar that serves food? Pennsylvania sure isn't one of them, according to the Liquor Control Board (see question 4).
Thanks, guys. We've been very stressed out about this since it came so suddenly. We only adopted her 9 months ago, and she was kind of a rescue--someone brought her into the vet to be euthanized for fleas, and they fixed her up and we adopted her. Combine that with having to go back to Allentown this weekend to take care of my dad, who's recovering from surgery, and it's been a bit stressful. (Also my ancient car's in the shop so my wife and I amazingly were briefly a two rental car family.)
I haven't been to the Elbow Room since it went back but I enjoyed the bar as it was before it re-became the Elbow Room, the 1947 Tavern. Same owners, good food, nice ambience both inside and out, good bartenders.
If for some reason Elbow Room isn't fine for all ages (but it probably is), you can go to the adjacent bar also owned by the same people, Bites and Brews. They have more pizza and burgers and stuff so it might be more teen friendly.
Oh, I forgot you're going on Tuesday. Tuesday is bacon night at Harris Grill across the street.
29: Indiana. We ran into this problem on my own college tour.
Station on Liberty is pretty good place for food in Bloomfield.
Looks like I picked the wrong time to go offline. I'm just back from Kelleys Island in OH. So:
First, I'm a dumbass, and am going to the Pirates game tonight, so no dinner for me.
Second, I hate Station more than any restaurant in Pittsburgh. Ugly, depressing decor, fussy, overthought food that isn't remotely as good as it thinks it is.
Third, Elbow Room is fine for kids (we brought three), but the food was a mixed bag.
For my money, Adolfo's, an Italian-Venezuelan BYOB place, is probably the best restaurant on Liberty Ave. (although Thai Cuisine is solid Thai).
Spork on Penn Ave is IMO exactly what Station is trying to be, but it actually succeeds. A very pleasant walking distance from B'field.
overthought food that isn't remotely as good as it thinks it is
The wonder isn't that the food thinks too highly of itself, but that it can think at all.
34: And once you figure out the food is thinking, it kind of ruins your appetite.
31: Really? That was not my experience when I was there, which would overlap with or be earlier than when you were there. But I also didn't have children and didn't spend much time in bars, so maybe there was some weird gray zone I didn't know about.
At Elbow Room, definitely get the gnocchi tots or whatever they're called. Do NOT get the fried chicken and mac & cheese: very disappointing.
"recklessly" !
(a) It is a Class C misdemeanor for a minor to recklessly be in a tavern, bar, or other public place where alcoholic beverages are sold, bartered, exchanged, given away, provided, or furnished. In addition to other penalties under this subsection, the minor's driver's license shall be suspended for up to one (1) year in accordance with IC 9-24-18-8 and IC 9-30-4-9.
(b) It is a Class C misdemeanor for a permittee to recklessly permit a minor to be in the prohibited place beyond a reasonable time in which an ordinary prudent person can check identification to confirm the age of a patron.
(Formerly: Acts 1973, P.L.55, SEC.1.) As amended by Acts 1982, P.L.69, SEC.18; P.L.102-1983, SEC.7; P.L.79-1986, SEC.4; P.L.77-1988, SEC.7; P.L.1-1993, SEC.46.
Is there a state in the US where kids with parents are not allowed in a bar that serves food?
Well, it's complicated: At Kelly's, there is and always (since it reopened 15 years ago) has been a legit food menu, but it's a strict 21-and-over place (we got kicked out when Iris was ~3 months old). It's supposedly something to do with percentage of sales going to food vs liquor.
38: But that just means a bar, not a bar with a restaurant, right? Don't make me google recklessly, peep!
So, did we unsettle the plans or what?
40: Go for it, Thorn! Google recklessly! And dance like no one is watching!

In the list of exceptions --
That part of a hotel or restaurant which is separate from a room in which is located a bar over which alcoholic beverages are sold or dispensed by the drink.
So as long as there is a separate room away from the bar?
I definitely won't be there tonight. Our cat passed away today after surgery. My wife and I are wrecks over this and I'd only bring down the mood. I hope you have a good time wherever you end up.
Sorry to hear that. Hope to see you at a better time for you.
That's sad news. Sorry. Everyone else in PGH, you now have to give a good wake.
I started already. I got bored at work. Sitting at the bar there, unless there moved. In which case I'm pre-gaming before moving on.
He does have the most experience with firearms.
Oh, damn. We forgot to order a
salad with fries on it.
Wait a minute. Are you all together? Is there a meetup in progress?
Did it just end? Did I screw up by not biking there directly from the game?
We left the restaurant before nine and had a drink at Cosma's, so you wouldn't have found us there.
Well fuck me. Apparently the head director had to downgrade 2 reviews in my section to the lowest "needs improvement" and I was arbitrarily picked for one of them which also means the lowest salary bump. And this was over my boss's objections though he's got no choice and he's already on his way out (he was informed that he would be replaced by some seriously connected dude while he was on leave.AIMHMHB) This in a year where I did really well in a number of areas and hit it out of the park in one in particular. I saw my percentage rating and I was only 3% from the full exceeds expectations rating. Fuck them and fuck this place. No wonder why people are leaving in droves. I've lost much of my enthusiasm for this job and my enthusiasm is one of my greatest assets, it's palpable and contagious. One of the few things keeping me here is that it's close enough to Chani that I can take regular cheap weekend trips but if I can find something halfway decent in the region I'm gone. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

Barry, that just rots. Management to a curve?! What with your boss getting pushed out for a patronage hire the place sounds like it is on a downhill slope.
Barry, that is appalling. You need to get out of there quickish. I've heard of manaement to a curve before, but picking the victims by lot, rather than just moving everybody down a peg? That's a new one!
Wherever you go, Barry, know you can always find comfort in overeducated jokes round here.
67 A downhill slope and we haven't even launched yet!
68 I wish but options are limited now and really limited given I want to stay in the region and near(ish) the gf. But I'm definitely looking at options in her country.
On topic from last night: researchers who don't know what they are doing.
