For a little more context, this was kind of a big deal at the time, but also since. Wetterling's mother ran for office a couple of times, and it all happened during the big 80's sex abuse panic. And I don't think that it was at all clear at the time that the cops had a couple of really strong suspects, but they didnt seem to follow up on them in a timely manner.
That case was such a big deal at the time. It was all over the newspapers even in South Dakota. Really, really sad. I admire Patty Wetterling a lot.

Thanks for sharing that, Nat. I realize they probably have to reach out to his mother but that note in the article about the news station calling her after knowing she'd hung up on the initial message struck me as heartbreaking.
Yeah, I'm glad I never had to do that kind of reporting as a journalist -- we totally made 18 and 19 year olds do it though.
