I've actually always wondered about that.
Seems easy enough to demagogue: "Trump's wall will leave tens of thousands of acres of American soil on the wrong side of the border. Join with me to stop this unprecedented giveaway of American territory."
We use President Frontera's Enchilada sauce all the time.
The president of Mexico should start sending unarmed military patrols into the excluded region and making noises about annexation.
That would just get Trump a win in 2020.
All of the Berlin Wall was in East Berlin.
So let me ask the stupid question:
That fence looks relatively easy to climb. You can certainly see someone who's ignorant of geography -- not to mention construction costs -- looking at it and thinking that what we need is a (taller) wall instead of a fence. I know all the reasons that actually building a wall is bullshit (and I know there are stretches of walls and different types of fencing,) but did someone think this particular fence would be effective? Or was it really just theater from the beginning?
Very interesting about the no-man's land. I had no idea it was big.
It's all just theater until they start with real consequences for employing somebody who is here illegally.
