Yay! We should get unreasonable drinks somewhere, rather than just settling for Fresh Salt.
Let me be the first to suggest The Dead Rabbit.
How unreasonable is Amor y Amargo? Probably pretty unreasonable because it's apparently small? Also probably $$$?
According to the internet, they have $15 cocktails. That means you can't get away with tipping $1 per drink.
It appears that The Dead Rabbit charges $16 per cocktail. So it's a rip-off or 7% better.
A&A appears to have no food at all, which seems difficult. But that's certainly a neighborhood where transitioning to a place that serves food is easy.
I am astounded to learn that The Dead Rabbit is a real place. I was certain it was Moby's invention.
I am a man of the world. I googled 'most expensive drinks in Manhattan' and it was the first hit.
I have a vague memory that the Dead Rabbits was a Five Points gang. But I'd need to google for any details at all.
In fact, an Irish-American militia that didn't quite actually exist.
Yes. Liam Nesson carrying a dead rabbit on a pole is something I recall.
It's the sort of thing that would be memorable, I expect.
Also, I should see "Gangs of New York" someday.
From various clicking on the link in 10, I learned that there was a gangster named "Mickey Spillane" who was of no relation to the author. Of course, Wikipedia doesn't say if they did a 23 and me test on the two.
Unrelatedly, I'll be in San Francisco and the East Bay for some of that time.
I thought 2 was made up because who'd go to a bar named after a positive pregnancy test.
I think the rabbit died from just the testing process, independent of whether or not the test was positive. I learned this from a M.A.S.H. episode.
Didn't they work it out so that the rabbit survived in that episode? I remember Radar being upset.
Yes, that's the one. But the rabbit was going to die from doing the test even though Major Houlihan wasn't pregnant.
I gather the test involved sprinkling urine on rabbit ovaries.
J-mo and I are in. And I like Amor y Amargo.
Dammit nosflow, I'm planning on flying in to NY the following week. Sorry to miss you.
I'm going to be in New York between the sixth and the thirteenth of June, inclusive,
Surely this is contradictory. You can be in a place from the sixth to the 13th, inclusive, or you can be someplace from the 7th to the 12, and therefore be there between the sixth and 13th. But not both.
What if you all have such a good time with Neb that nobody comes to MY meet-up? What if you all have such a bad time with Neb that nobody comes to MY meet-up?
What if you all have such a good time with Neb that nobody comes to MY meet-up? What if you all have such a bad time with Neb that nobody comes to MY meet-up?
It would look something like this.
Come to NYC the following week Heebie and I'll meet-up.
I should be around here when you are, CCarp.
29: True story: My father died 10 days ago after a gradual decline, and about two weeks ago he told my sister that he was dying.
"We're all dying," my sister responded.
"But I'm dying-er," he said.
His mind had decayed considerably by this point, but he maintained a sense of humor to the end that his children, at least, found charming.
I was talking to a former colleague of his at the funeral, and decided against sharing that anecdote because I wasn't sure she would find it as heartwarming as I did.
Thanks, gents. I didn't mean to hijack neb's thread, but peep's comment made me smile and I thought I'd share that story.
Please return to your regularly scheduled programming.
I'm sorry, Millard.
I always loved the Onion headline from back in the day, "Terry Schiavo Dies of Embarrassment".
My dad's decline was mental first, so he never noticed he was dying so far as I ever could tell.
Sympathy to pres filmore.
Charley & minivet would be lovely to meet up!
And I will be in Paris May 25-30, anyone else likely to be about?
I think I can guess who 36 is, but it would be nice to know.
It is hardly conceivable that 36 is anyone other than dq.
We are unequally endowed with mental models of each other.
|| The best slot for me is Sunday am June 11. I have to be at SFO for a 12:43 pm departure. Waking up early in Bay Point . . .
Pseud is email enabled, not that it's a difficult address. |>
I love 30. That would fit in seamlessly on my father's side of the family.
Yes was me! Drowned phone while in Cornwall, replacement still getting up to speed.
DQ, for your email shown does one replace the domain name with the standard option?
I could probably make a June 11 Bay Area meetup too.
Surely this is contradictory.
u wanna fight
Clearly this is the wrong week because I won't be in NYC until 19 June.
50 But that's the right week for me if I can manage a numbrr of balls currently or soon to be in the air. Let's plan our NYC meet-up on nosflow's NYC meet-up post.
Good idea. And let's commit lots of grammatical solecisms to wind him up even further.
I think the rabbit died from just the testing process, independent of whether or not the test was positive.
I thought they used frogs rather than rabbits? http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/explainer/2006/01/the_amphibian_pregnancy_test.html
Ah, wait, they used rabbits and then switched to frogs: "A replacement for the rabbit test involved using frogs, specifically the African clawed frog, which like all frogs lays eggs instead of getting pregnant, and therefore can yield a positive result on the test without the need to be cut open in order to prove it."
Which must have been a relief for all involved.
Liam Nesson carrying a dead rabbit on a pole is something I recall.
It was just that kind of party, man. I ran into Dame Maggie Smith holding a badger glued to an umbrella.
Scorsese often appears with a dead Neeson on a pole.
And once, supposedly, with a dead Dafoe, but I find that hard to credit.
I will be around in Manhattan on the evening of 21 June for a meetup. Since it is the summer solstice, I will be therefore be carrying Edward Woodward trapped in a cage on a pole.
So June now includes neB, heebie, Barry, and Ajay, all in NY on possibly incompatible days? I miss Becks. She was good at organizing things.
Sounds busy. You'll need to decide which people you want to see most.
Barry and I will both be fresh from the desert (different deserts) and will therefore both be narrow-eyed and taciturn, with vaguely messianic demeanours. If that helps the decision.
58: See what I mean about being bad at organizing things?
60: I believe that means we need a venue with space for a religious war.
I think Rhode Island was founded on religious dissension.
They're civilized men. You can use one of those chessboards in Central Park.
I will get the first round in BECAUSE I AM A RIVER TO MY PEOPLE.
Let's plan our NYC meet-up on nosflow's NYC meet-up post.
GRRRR
Come on, mine's the soonest, after all!
Wait is this meet up sorted out yet?
I'm only being a little bit of a dick. But I want to make this one!
Any of them, really. I don't play favorites.
Well, none of them have been sorted out yet as far as I can tell. Mine is on 21 June but may just consist of me in a bar (no idea which one). Plus possibly Barry.
If anyone is in Rome (or in the Vatican) second week in June ...
I'm willing to go to Rome if there are transportation funds.
I want to see the real Rome again before the absurd workings of my inner brain replace those memories with what I saw more recently at Caesar's Palace.
Regarding funds, that is. Haven't been to Vegas.
I don't even own a passport. At least not an valid one.
I too will be in New York in June, will not overlap with any other visitors, and am ridiculously overbooked already. Sorry! Bay Area meetup is vaguely possible, although I'd have to be enticed out to Bay Point.
The Paris meet up is looking like it'll be me et moi BUT new fred vargas is released today so that's hours of consolation there! Interview with vargas in elle today, book sounds reassuringly bizarre. Yay!
I don't think the Lincoln meet-up is going to happen either.
I don't know what date neB is settling on, but we can treat 6/21 as confirmed for Barry, ajay, and hopefully DQ. Further discussions on what neighborhoods are convenient for everyone will be needed before we agree on Fresh Salt.
(Did I mention that I had an online date this winter who spontaneously suggested Fresh Salt? I was amused.)
Did you explain it to him on the first date or let him think you were normal?
On the first date. I believe in full disclosure.
I thought the advantage of on-line dating was that it made it easier to deceive people at the start.
Maybe that was on-line job hunting?
82.last is awesome
85 Full disclosure does not necessitate telling your date about all of our traditions (NMM, etc,)
88.2: I enjoy the increased degree of difficulty it presents.
I bet the Japanese have a name for that.
My brother and his girlfriend met on-line and admit this openly. So I'm guessing it's now very rare to meet a serial killer. Or maybe when two serial killers meet, sometimes magic happens.
I don't know what date neB is settling on,
I never settle, Lb. However, I am likely to want to attend concerts on the seventh, eighth, and ninth. So ... Tenth? Eleventh?
I am indifferent between those two dates, in terms of conflicts, but a Saturday night is probably preferable to a Sunday. Call it the tenth.
92: say, any concerts you'll be disappointed to miss on June 1-4? (I found virtually nada, except Tom Zé.)
Answering this question is 100% optional.
6/10-11 is pride, so wear something nice
6/21 works for me!
|| lk, send me an email. The Bay Area meetup conversation has moved off blog. |>
91.last: Soon to be a dramatic film: Stranger Dangers When We Meet
95: in NYC? Lemme check.
Chris Pitsiokos and Miya Masaoka at Issue Project Room, maybe? Joe Morris is at the Stone on the 3rd and 4th. Honestly, I don't really know where to look anymore.
The 7th or 8th would have been better for us because child-free, but I'll see if we can get a sitter for the 10th.
Well, if you want to join me for Tomeka Reid at Roulette on the seventh or whatever it was I was thinking of on the eighth I'm sure you'd be more then welcome.
Penciling the 10th into my calendar.
We should probably have a venue, too! and a time.
Meet at Amor y whatever it was for at least an initial drink, and then maybe decamp for food elsewhere? On a weekend, I have no opinions about time.
For a time, let's say five. That's enough time to get really drunk so you can save money on dinner by going to Roy Rogers. If there are any left out that way.
Finding a Roy Rogers would be a challenge. Near Penn Station someplace? Maybe?
The first time I was in New York, there was a Roy Rogers. It was the first I'd ever seen, so I associate the restaurant with Manhattan dining.
This was before Giuliani destroyed all the local character.
Fair. The man himself did personify cosmopolitan urbanity.
Rogers, not Giuliani. Giuliani personifies cruelty and ferret-hatred.
It looks like my plans have changed and I won't be back to NY till the last week in June until mid-July. So I'm going to miss everybody this year.
I'm hurt. The permanent NY residents are nobody to you?
I'm charmed. No one has bothered to comment post-bump.
I should be congratulated on my restraint.

In a rare display of foresight I took extra shoes and socks, and thus do not have prune feet. Next year: consider purchasing a rain cape.
Ooh, a rain cape sounds like fun just in general.
I have been placed in a taxi in a semiconscious state and it is just now dawning on me that it was indeed driving me out of Brooklyn, to an airport, where disturbing evidence suggests that a plane has been chartered to fly me thousands of miles from New York. Imminent departure. What a terrible business.
