On the rental car, probably depends on where you're staying. If deep in SF, and/or bartable, probably easier without.
I'm, um, still nailing down exactly where I'll stay that night.
The default is that you don't want a rental car, unless there's a *particular reason* you do want a rental car. You can get quite a few Lyfts for the price of a rental car, and not having to park is much better. Reasons to have a rental car would be: going to Muir woods, driving south along the coast on highway 1, seeing the baby goats in Pescadero, going tidepooling, etc. But there's also tons of stuff to do without leaving the city, so by default no rental car.
One caveat: do you have an early morning flight out on a Sunday? Is that flight earlier than BART opens on a Sunday? How were you planning on getting to the airport? If your hotel has parking it may make sense to just keep the car the extra day for an early flight, or maybe just Lyft there.
Can we bump the NY meetup thread or combine a NYC meetup post to this one and add my dates? I'll be in NY from June 24 to July 14. Let's have another NYC meetup!
4 I can promise tales of craziness under siege!
Barry, do you fly out on the 14th, or are you actually available for a meet up on the 14th?
I fly back to here on the 14th. I'm flying to NYC tomorrow and will be available from Monday till July 13th.
June would be better though. Wednesday or Thursday but I'm flexible depending on who will be around.
2: What are your current constraints relating to meetup time and location?
I won't be back until too late on the 5th to meet up.
Generally, I can do something next week just fine. This whole weekend is a mental hellscape of family drama, so I should either be relieved or emotionally scarred but with stories.
8: I'll take the rest of them to the airport around 2, and then I'm free to show up wherever!
3.1 is a pretty solid list of reasons to have a rental car. Does Heebie in SF sans kids mean Fresh SaltDrake's Dealership is out of the running? My votes are Southern Pacific or Gestalt.
I will be in NYC July 7th through July 17th and could do any NYC meetup in that time frame (weeknights would probably work best though).
I will also be doing 10 days in NYC a month pretty regularly for the foreseeable future.
Assuming it's possible to cancel a car rental without penalty (within 24 or 48 hours, or whatever), I would secure a reservation for a car now, and then decide later. It's likely you won't want a rental car for just that one day, but why not make a reservation, just in case? (again, assuming that you can cancel without penalty).
Both places suggested in 13 would be easily accessed via transit, also Sycamore is on the same area.
They're near the kid's dance studio too, a shame heebie won't be in the neighborhood on a Tuesday evening she could join him for tap class ... 💃
14 Does that also work for LB, any other NYC commenters/lurkers?
I"d be happy to meet you on the fifth of July, Heebs.
Is that good for other commenters? I would gladly do two meetups. Let's set one for the 12th as the 13th will be the day before I fly back and I may have last minute stuff to do.
Wait! NYC-ers, you're on the hook to see me on the 17th. It's a Monday. I could move it a little if need be, but don't burn yourselves out on meet ups a week early.
Stepping on heebie's meetups like she steps on Ogged's posts.
Ogged's posts are like ripe little fluff balls, begging for a stomping.
Sadly, we're going to be away from the 15th to the 23rd.
I'll be there the 5th, but probably can't make before 6.
should be put our shoulders back to the wheel and settle on a july 5 location or put it off for a few more days? i suggest we stick to SF (last bay area meet up was in oakland) and a bart-friendly location. the mission locations suggested by yawnoc are fine with me (so pacific & gestalt) as is sycamore.
I'm bringing kids. Baby goats I mean. I just think they're cute.
Smearcase: ICYMI, in the other thread ajay said about you, "I dunno, he just strikes me as trustworthy with regard to leopards."
I don't know if you are inclined to confirm or deny . . .
FWIW, I've determined that I'm fundamentally too socially phobic for meetups and I'm done trying, but I wish you all the very best and am particularly sorry to miss heebie.
30: If you've already got leopard food, I withdraw my request for a more expansive search for a candidate. I've never even thrown a mouse to a snake, let alone a goat to a predator.
I'd adore a little leopard. What was the question again?
I seem not even to lurk here very much anymore so I'm afraid I missed the leopard-related compliment.
Realistically, on a week night, I should admit that there's some possibility of me bailing on crossing the bay. Leopards or no.
Little leopards are adorable, but they have this problem that they eventually turn into fucking huge leopards.
Gestalt 6 pm next Wednesday got it, sorry we won't see you lk and poss not m.smearcase!
I realize in retrospect, and to my internal shame as a native speaker of Pretentious English, that I meant to say Zeitgeist, not Gestalt. Oh well. I'll be there but maybe a teensy bit late.
And suffering from Weltschmertz.
Hoping to come; uncertain of when I'll make it. Travelling up from the South Bay is pretty uncertain.
41: apparently the actual term is "Beschneidung", rather than, as I had guessed, "Herumschneidung".
Zu dieser Zeit sprach der HERR zu Josua: Mache dir steinerne Messer und beschneide die Israeliten wie schon früher. Da machte sich Josua steinerne Messer und beschnitt die Israeliten auf dem Hügel der Vorhäute.
Ok wait. The restaurant is called Gestault? All I can find is something called Gestault Haus in Fairfax, CA. Is this what we're talking about?
No. 3159 16th St., SF. Take BART to 16th St. Mission.
And then walk either .2 miles or .5 miles.
walk a sweet block and a half on one simple street, no turns and don't have to contend with any transfers between different transit systems or competing street grids colliding at awkward angles. you're welcome. :)
My phone died over the weekend and I am awaiting a replacement, so others will have to pick up the liveblogging slack. (More hands free for knives.)
I wandered around for awhile just enjoying the wander, and then stopped for coffee and internet. They're playing David Allen Coe and Garth Brooks. Of course.
Somebody check Crooked Timber. Maybe the liveblogging is there?
Heading to the Municipal dance for some knife fightin'.
I'm happy to report that Dairy Queen has a super charming family, apartment, and pink bathroom.
The non-pink bathroom is filthy.
We are delighted to have heebie amongst us!
neb and Dave taught me about Duff's device, which is extremely cute but which I aspire to never have to use. neb feigned amazement that I could be ignorant of such a thing and still have found gainful employment.
So you guys weren't discussing a musical instrument? Huh.
63: That was the improbable ice tuba.
