Re: A small sample of depressing things

The Trump Jr collusion thing might be what unzips this whole mess. Unfortunately I don't think it will have the effect of removing Trump from office. Which might be. good thing. President Pence wouldn't be constantly tripping over his own toes, he'd be marching merrily towards Gilead.

God I hope so. Also I hope we don't go to war with North Korea.

I hope that if we do, we don't lose. That would help Trump get out of office, but would be really embarrassing.

There's a pattern that drove me batshit during the Bush years that's happening again. The left would be saying "Oh my god, they did X! X is happening!" And the administration would deny and obfuscate for a year or so. And gradually it would become apparent that X was true and provable, but the media coverage would have somehow flipped to "Of course everyone knows that X happened. Old news. If it were important people would have freaked out when the story broke." Except that there was somehow never a moment when the story broke.

That's what it feels like is happening again.

My least favorite part of the sky-is-falling progressive press has always been the newly-discovered secret memorandum that reveals that the rezoning/standardized testing/football stadium/downtown parking garage/waterfront redevelopment/etc. is "all about money." Hold on, Village Voice! I need to sit down! This fallen world is spiraling around my newly-scaleless eyes!

4: yes, and I think the Downing Street Memos were a great example of that. Basically confirmed what all the shrill people were saying at the time (while for the most part not being invited on TV) but greeted with a big "of course" yawn by the media.

That took three years go come out. And, if I recall correctly, was leaked by somebody who wanted to oppose the PM, not by the PM's offspring trying to defend his dad. The world is getting far, far stupider.

You know that South Park where Cartman falls off of the house, becomes a 'psychic', and no rational explanation will serve to get the police to ignore Cartman. So Stan jumps off the same roof to become a psychic. That's the world we live in except I can't figure out what roof to jump off of in order to get credibility with people who think Trump is reasonable.

I think you're coming at this the wrong way. Doesn't it make more sense to convince people who think Trump is reasonable to jump off of roofs instead?

In this analogy, jumping off the roof puts you in a painless coma from which you will awaken with no residual damage.

A small depressing thing.

The trend in % of Republicans saying "college and universities have positive/negative effect on the way things are going in this country."

For those disinclined to click:
Percent Reps saying "positive":
2015     2016     2017
54%      43%       36%

Declines across all demographics.

From this Pew Study.

So, are Republicans, as a group, getting worse, or this the effect of a lot of less-terrible people leaving the Republican party?

Prediction before the summer is out, Trump will have fired* Mueller and all of his team, and blanket pardoned Kushner, his sons**, Flynn and anyone else from his campaign/previous life who really has the goods on him personally; and thrown the rest under the bus.**
