I'm in for Thursday the 10th in Boston.
Weirdly I'm in Boston the 10th, but I have dinner plans in Cambridge. I might be able to make it if the hangout runs late and is in Camberville, but don't plan around me as I really can't commit.
Because I've never been to Massachusetts in my life, I can't figure out the odds of me being at the meet-up unless I switch from frequentist to Bayseian methods.
Non-zero chance I will be there. I might be going to a thing in Boston on the 11th.
I'm in for Boston.
Lord Hobo in Cambridge? Bar above Central Kitchen?
I can do brunch on the 13th. Neighborhood thoughts?
Aw, I'm off to Maine for a vacation next week or I'd happily join a Boston meetup. Have fun! Liveblog!
Our main Boston constraints are: we'll probably be having dinner beforehand in Cambridge/Somerville, and we'll need to take the commuter rail west towards Framingham afterwards.
As for NYC brunch: the wedding we're going to that afternoon is in Gowanus, so somewhere in south Brooklyn would be ideal, but I recognise that's basically the opposite side of the city from LB.
Split the distance and go with Hobeken.
I'm sorry I'll be out of town and miss you and the Fury, X.
Fran Lebowitz once said something about everybody leaving NYC in the summer except for writers and poor people. I guess that after air conditioning got more widespread, this is less true.
There are routes that place Fresh Salt in between LB's neighborhood and South Brooklyn. I'll allow someone else to be the first to suggest them.
Also, if Gowanus is South Brooklyn, what's Brighton Beach? Deep South Brooklyn?
Also, if Gowanus is South Brooklyn, what's Brighton Beach?
A mile of shingle in Sussex.
Also, if Gowanus is South Brooklyn, what's Brighton Beach? Deep South Brooklyn?
Fair enough - the sad truth is that I rarely went south of Gowanus, but yes, calling it South Brooklyn makes no sense.
How does Lord Hobo sound for Boston on Thursday? It is not far from the Red Line at Kendall, which is four stops from South Station and the commuter train to Framingham. Looks like they leave roughly every 60 minutes on the half-hour until 11:30.
Lord Hobo on Thursday sounds good. Let me check with the friend we're meeting for dinner about a time...
Works for me. Meadhall is also nearby, if you'd rather go there.
Still waiting for confirmation from my friend, but I like the idea of Meadhall, since it's right by the Red Line. Maybe 8:30 for drinks?
Meadhall sucks. If Lord Hobo is out, the bar above Central Kitchen (unmarked but named Brick and Mortar) is so much better than Meadhall.
Many more options in Kendall these days- Firebrand, Commonwealth, if you want expensive bizarre drinks there's Art Science, Glasshouse is nice but pricey, State Park, CBC, A4.
I want expensive bizarre drinks! But I don't really get a vote.
I don't know the places mentioned in 22, but I will be in Central after work, and I won't be drinking, because I'll have my car parked in a garage in Central.
8:30 sounds good. Anyone want to recommend one of the places from SP's 22? If not, Lord Hobo? Any of the ones mentioned so far will be fine with me.
I think Lord Hobo is best because none of the others have been in the mouseover text.
Lord Hobo is a bit more of a trek from the T.
I've been averaging over 11,000 steps a day this whole year. Walking is good.
I can provide more details about any of the above- haven't been to Brick and Mortar and I'm less familiar with Central places in general- I only know Phoenix, Asgard, Naco Taco, and Miracle of Science. Oh and we did have a meetup once at Cuchi Cuchi that IIRC was followed by karaoke at Charlies in Harvard Sq. If you're willing to walk to Hobo, there's also a new brewery/taproom, Lamplighter, that's approximately the same distance, but I think it's often pretty crowded.
Traditionally the impetus for the meetup chooses the venue, so pick a place, x.
A couple months ago I went to a BJ meetup (here, have some low hanging fruit) and set next to John Cole at Asgard.
Gaaahhh too much pressure. I don't know any of these places. SP, you seem to know them. Can I delegate to you the decision? Desiderata: on red line, we'll be able to get a table, quiet enough not to yell, microbrews desirable.
BG, does Brick and Mortar meet those criteria? I don't know how big it is or how crowded.
You should also hold out for giant ice blocks in the mixed drinks.
The criteria in 31 make sense to me. Looks like Brick and Mortar has about 8 drafts...not great, but typical for Boston. 31 rules out The Asgard, which is way too loud.
29: we had a meetupnat Brick and Mortar with Knecht, possibly Sifu and Blume, and some people in town for some Geeky thing.
Ok, Brick and Mortar, 8:30. Feel free to get there earlier but we're getting dinner with an old friend in Harvard square at 6:30, and I don't want to declare a time we'll be rushed to meet.
I'll probably be there early and can get a table if needed.
Do we have five? X. Trapnel, IF, BG, SP, and me?
Brick and Mortar definitely works better than Lord Hobo then, the latter is a bit of a walk. I could come to a pre-meetup meetup. I'm in Central around 6:30 and would want to be heading home by 8:30 or 9.
Kreskin - Make sure that SP is going to be there before you go. It looks like this thing is going to be a bit late for me to go to. I have an appointment that's over at 6:30 but don't really want to be hanging around on my own until 8:15 or so, much as I'd like to meet IF.
I'll be there but don't know what time yet. I'll probably go home from work then come back in.
Ok, great. Sorry for doing such a bad job organising this -- thanks to everyone for making suggestions. Looking forward to seeing whoever makes it! I emailed Nosflow about bumping the post so it's on the front page.

Could any young person explain what "lit" now means. Even the fucking Economist is using it. I had assumed that it meant just drunk, as in "well lit" but it appears to mean having a generally high time.
In that case, is liking instagrams from parties now known as lit crit?
Send love to the other Cambridge
!>
I think the idiom works pretty well if you substitute in 'on fire'. But I would not so much be in the category of 'young people', so I defer to anyone who is.
So just three locals, with BG there only early? I thought we used to have a sizable contingent.
I'll try to be there around 8:30. Kresklin will have to hold on to a table by himself for a few minutes.
I'll always have the Mineshaft to keep me company.
I'm not going to be able to make it. It's too late for me. I am in Central now with my car. I don't really feel like hanging out by myself for an hour and a half. Driving home and taking the T in would eat up a lot of time, and I want to be home by 9 9:30. So I'd only be there for 5 minutes.
Also feeling slightly down, so I'd probably be slow and dull. But have fun!
Sorry to miss you, BG!
According to Yelp, this place has a small number of big tables, so a party our size is unlikely to have its own table. Is that okay, or should we go somewhere else?
As long as there are seats it's fine, I think. We're done with dinner and heading over soon from Harvard square.
Since it appears there are only four of us, if the beers aren't high enough quality it's only a nine minute walk to the taproom.
I too will be there in about ten minutes, but not ten minutes from when you said ten minutes.
I have arrived. There is no table, and it is loud.
We are downstairs, they said about ten mins to get in. Maybe we could find a quieter place with seats?
Ok, it is full and loud so we are heading southeast on Mass Ave.
Brick and Mortar was full, we are across the street at Phoenix Landing, should any unannounced people be coming.
Thanks to SP and Kreskin for showing up! Sorry you couldn't make it, BG.
Great to see X. Trapnel and SP again. Very nice to meet IF. Hope to do it again sometime.
The least liveblogged meetup in unfogged history! That keeps it more mysterious to encourage people to come to future ones.
Sorry, my suggestion was loud. It never used to be.
So... anyone up for Sunday brunch in NYC?
I had thought I would be, but I've been mugged by family obligations. Sorry to miss you!
I am, except for the part about getting to NYC.
We would, but are away for the weekend.
Still time to fly out and have brunch in SF instead! You only live once!
