Re: Friday WTFuckery

Regarding Mueller, it all comes down to the congressional republicans. There have been some positive signs of bipartisan congressional support for protecting Mueller's investigation, but if we can't get the republicans to vote for impeachment and indictment, Trump is untouchable.

218 votes needed in the House and 67 in the Senate. And that's conviction, not indictment, in the Senate

"It was TERRIFYING! I was in a cheesy interior design shop full of middle-aged Americans today!"
"And?"
"You don't understand. THEY HAD HATS."
"Um."
"BIG HATS. I thought I was going to be murdered."
"...you may not be entirely ready to travel long distances on your own."

I don't have much faith in juries lately, although I guess the Grand variety is a different enough species that a couple Trump/Fox News true believers who might have randomly been included aren't enough to derail it. Also depends on the pool- if it's a D.C. and not a VA jury there's a very small chance of getting Trump fans.

I thought the received wisdom was that you can get a Grand Jury to indict anyone. Maybe I just read too many George V. Higgins novels.

Sure, GJ rules are entirely stacked in favor of the prosecutor- no defense counsel, supermajority not unanimity required for issuing indictments. But jurors are also allowed more freedom to speak up themselves- you can imagine some Fox loyalist interjecting during every witness asking, "But what about Hillary's collusion with Russia, I saw on Hannity that it's being ignored!" I don't know what it takes to get kicked off a GJ besides leaking.

So the NAACP isn't calling for a boycott, just pointing out that Missouri is a shitty place to be if you are black. I don't feel qualified to argue against that nor do I think it is incorrect, but I agree with the OP that I don't see what it has to do with travelers in a way that wouldn't hurt residents more.

Maybe the NAACP noticed how weirdly shaped the Kansas City Airport is? Anyway, I may boycott the Waffle House even thought it's the only Waffle House I'm ever near these days.

I want something to boycott. The problem is that I can't find a good one that would be, say, 70% efficient or higher. That is, I don't want to do a boycott where the costs of the boycott are mostly carried by people who just happen to live in the same state or city as Trump voters, but the actual voters, or, even better, the donors. I don't think you need to count intra-sector job shifts against the efficiency of a boycott. For example, though boycotting Trump hotels might mean fewer employees at Trump hotels, that should be offset by more jobs in hotels not owned by fucks. But, if you were to boycott whole states, you'd probably be either completely ineffective or doing more collateral damage than good.

The attacks on that Marvel editor are horrible and there's no excuse but I think it's somewhat missing the point of the grievance. They aren't mad at that photo per se, milkshakes with friends, they're mad at feeling like white men are under attack (drinking male tears, evil white men, etc.).

My friend and I (both super white) stopped at some chain restaurant, maybe an Applebee's. Conversation dropped when we asked for a table for two. Our accents telegraphed "not from here." We could feel eyes on us. It was the creepiest lunch ever. I thought the tweet was funny, because I recognized the sentiment.

Here let me ruin your mood again. Including an opinion by a shortlist candidate for Trumps next SCOTUS pick. I'm sure she has no problem sentencing minorities to decade long terms for carrying ounces of pot or upholding death sentences where evidence of innocence came too late. But send people to prison for gunning down Iraqis, that's "cruel and unusual".

She does a lot with the Russian Orthodox church locally, and she says that in the U.S. people don't make a big deal of the difference, though they would back home.

When an actual serious-minded person confronts the issue of how we ought to confront hate -- and whether, in fact, it is somehow paradoxical to hate the haters -- you get something like this.
