Huh, learned something new today; I had assumed that Chris/Christina Kahrl had just used "Chris" on rec.sport.baseball to avoid the aggro of being female in a male-dominated space, but apparently not: https://www.outsports.com/2013/3/24/4143434/trans-editor-of-baseball-prospectus-tells-her-story
some of the best debates came from the fact that everyone was still sort of working out the kinks of the problematic corners of their views. I can't remember the last time someone otherwise-sensible said something sexist and then defended it to the mats, but that sure used to be fun to watch.
"working out the kinks of the problematic corners of their views" s/b "working out which things they couldn't say without starting an argument"
you're just saying this because you're a girl, heebie.
Oh hey, this was linked on the Pirates board I frequent. Her online presence reminds me, somewhat, of a woman who was the de facto authority of the Beatles board where I spent most of my online time while at CMU (where I arrived the year Nichols left). That board was afaicr not especially sexist, and (probably? It's been 25 years) had some reasonable share of female participants (The Beatles being one of the least gendered music groups out there, in terms of fandom), but goodness knows Usenet boards were de facto sexist as hell.
But there was a certain kind of female voice that really worked: not "one of the boys", and not "the cool girl", but something else. Something that would bring basically everyone to a pause to listen.
10: Not 8, 9! Is there a course in remedial commenting?
Yes, but it would be cruel to send you to Crooked Timber.
12: I don't think anyone here deserves that, really.
It's fine, just never read the comments.
