Re: Melabsentia

I'm beginning to wonder if this isn't the storybook romance that we all thought it was.

I really liked the linked article. It's sharp and analytical without feeling mean.

I suppose even the most perfect marriage is going to have rough patches, but it's sad to think about.

I wish I'd said "Do you all have Melapinions?" and smushed her name up as much as possible in the OP.

Melly! Mel B. Mel C. Mel T. Melty.

Melanin is helpful against sunburn. Melatonin is helpful against insomnia and jet lag, but it should be applied sparingly to avoid building up tolerance. #JustMyMelapinions

Didn't she show up at an event yesterday? I was starting to think there was something seriously weird going on, but given that she's visibly participating in public life, I've reverted to believing only in background levels of Trump weirdness.

12 Did she? I didn't see anything about it.

They're either separating or she's in the hospital, recovering from a broken jaw.

I used to not know that anyone associated 8 with people other than Toby Keith, but now I do, and I don't feel better or worse for that.

AND I will stake out the position that it's actually a lovely song.

You probably shouldn't watch the video though.

https://www.cnn.com/2018/06/04/politics/melania-trump-gold-star/index.html

The event was closed to the press, but she's appeared in front of a bunch of people. At which point... sure, it's super weird, but lots of things are super weird about the Trump administration, and she seems pretty low on the list.

Yes, she was at the event for Gold Star families, apparently.

14: This is just like that other time when I had on idea that Limp Bizkit did a cover of "Behind Blue Eyes". I've never heard the Toby Keith song.

It seems that I'm very very old.

...I didn't know about this, and I'm immediately saddened to learn it exists.

The Melania thing is weird. Maybe not unusually weird for this administration, but still worth commenting on.

My guess is that one of the downsides of being president, aside from people not going to your hotels except as a way of bribing you, is that you can't divorce your wife in a way that is both cheap and free of negative consequences for you.

I'm going to assert that the Toby Keith song is far superior to that Against the Wind song which I loathe so much that I am startled by the intensity of my reaction. I've got this Forrest Gump fake cornfield roadtrip association that makes my skin prickle, sort of like Life Is a Highway does.

I love that she has more or less refused to do any of the First Wife duties and I hope that frees up future first spouses to reject them as well.

25 is my theory. She gave a grudging try with Be Best and is now moving back to nearly 100% private life (or private from any media).

In ring-wing circles, it's not at all unusually to want mattresses that your alpha male has pissed on. It's the natural order.

I don't think the woman we've been seeing the past few days is the real Melania. I think she's been swapped out, like Becky, or Dick Sargent.

Just spent 10 minutes reading The Guardian's obituary for Madame Nhu. Pretty sure I'd never heard of her before. Fascinating stuff.
