Re: Two Things

Um, for dullards like me who don't know that much about philosphy, your "Two Things" doesn't tell me much at all. In fact, nothing . Whereas the other "Two Things" listed do tell me something, even about areas I also don't know much about.

Unless your point is that you can't do a "Two Things" for philosophy because it's like, too deep, man, and I have to go read Plato and Aristotle to even have a clue. In that case, could you provide a "Two Things for Plato", and a "Two Things for Aristotle"? Just to get me off on the right track?

But now I'm thinking that if you put your original answer on a pie chart, maybe along with a "3. Any Questions?", it might be funny.

Might.

I'd have to say the 2 things about philosophy would be:

1) Why isn't a spiritual question

2) But why is that?

The two things about binary code:

1. Zero

2. One

1. In a sense yes, and in another sense no

2. but then again, I could be wrong.

I used to have a professor who would say things like "the two most fundamental questions are: what the hell would it be? and how the hell would you know?" That almost seems right.

I like that #1. Of course, it's quite Aristotelian.

FL, you still sick? You really don't like Dylan? And what fuck is the matter with you anyway?

Wondering,

Ogged

haha. There's not a word for what's wrong with me. Just kidding. It's some sort of upper-respiratory thingy, but there are pills. The pills are effective, but not completely so. Thanks for asking.

Also it's the bad part of the term and I am immersed in pointless stupid nonsense.

I really don't go in for Bob Dylan, but I won't make a federal case about it. I think, actually, that most of my dislike stems from (a) his fan base (you know the ones I mean) and (b) his cryto-weirdness.

Also I've decided it's cheating to list Plato and Aristotle, because either this overemphasizes the study of historical figures, or uses P & A as ways of fixing a cluster of questions (i.e., "the sorts of things those guys did"). As if thing one were "these five interesting questions" and thing two were "five more." True, but unfair.

I hear you on the fans, but I frankly like his weirdness. How great it is that he just did a Victoria's Secret ad? Very great. How much greater because he most certainly knew that his fans would be crushed that he sold out to the Man? Much greater.

As for the philosophy, you know I'll do anything to get a little P&A into the blog.

I did mean it more in the second sense: these topics were all broached or discussed with greater nuance by P&A. If I had to answer in a fairer way, I'd say:

1. Figure out what you want to say.

2. Figure out why you want to say it.

3. Repeat.

Yeah, I always cheat.

Now you're reverting to your writing tutor roots. How about

1. That thing that never really struck me as problematic-- how's it work?

2. No, that can't be right.

Ah, those are very good.

I was trying to squeeze in some psychology and a hint of the hermenuetic cirlce (assuming that once you've done 2, you'll revise 1, und so weiter), but you're right, it does sound a lot like writing-tutor advice.

I'll distill:

1. I wonder...

2. I know! But...
