Does it have to be Manhattan or can we suggest anything in the five boroughs?
I'll visit Staten Island when the seas boil, but not before.
Go wild. If there's a thrilling bar in Staten Island, if love to hear about it.
I'm now wondering if the Staten Island Ferry would run in boiling water.
Crossed with Flip! All right, restrict yourself to the real boroughs.
Oh didn't see Flip in the thread, I just sent an email to some infrequent NYC commenters.
I also will not be visiting Staten Island anytime soon.
Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Hoboken.
It's looking like the best time would be from the 17th to the 20th.
Actually make that the 18th to the 20th.
72 hours is still a long time to spend in a bar.
I'd stick to LB's plan of just picking out a particular evening.
You can only meet at a place located on a numbered street (avenue, road, way, etc.) that matches the day of the month.
Make that anytime between the 17th and the 18th.
This thread is going to end with Barry not being in NYC at all.
It looks like the 19th is optimal for most.
19th was optimal to most but it never meant shit to me motherfucker was RAcIst
Now that I'm paying attention, I'm around AND on PTO starting on the 17th, so would even be willing to venture outside of manhattan.
Have we decided on a venue? A time? I'll probably get there earlyish, say around 5 to 6.
Oh, crap -- I lost track of this and can't show up until late if at all on the 19th. (Tickets to the 5pm Radio City show -- god only knows why my daughter wanted to take her college roommate to it.)
If LB's gonna be at Radio City, should we aim for something in the general vicinity or at least an easy subway ride? (as crazy and crowded as that vicinity is at this time of year?)
22 Good idea. I'll probably take in a few films downtown in the morning then make my way Midtown in the early to mid-afternoon to visit some old cow-orkers at NYPL.
Tell us about the movies Barry. And tell me also if Play Misty for Me is genuinely bad or if it's just aged worse than Clint.
Haven't been seeing as many as I'd like this time around. Caught Burning and Shoplifters* a couple of days ago both of which I highly recommend. I'm going to try to catch Roma on the big screen. And I think I will try the new Lanthimos later today.
Paul Duane on twitter a few days ago made a good point of how great the cinema of life on the margins has been the last few years, but what a thing:
The cinema of marginal life is the most powerful movement of the last few years. AMERICAN HONEY, LEAVE NO TRACE, FLORIDA PROJECT... interstitial people, barely hanging on. The 1930s is my favourite Hollywood era for similar reasons. I wish we weren't back there.
To which I'd add Tsai Ming-liang's Stray Dogs.
You should see the new Benicio del Toro movie.
27 Dora the Explorer: Day of the Soldado
I missed that in theatre. I was so pissed.
I'm going to try to catch Roma on the big screen
I saw that last night. Recommend highly.
But even after seeing it I couldn't understand the title. Had to go on Wikipedia to find out that it's the name of the neighborhood in Mexico City. I suppose it is also a nod to the Italian neorealist films that were an influence.
On topic because New York: Barry, LB, I think parcels are out to both of you at NY addresses and should show up very soon if they haven't already.
31 Oh wow! I'd totally forgotten about that and thought the package was one of many I've been ordering for Xmas presents for family or myself to take back to Arrakis. It's a gorgeous book. Thanks and Congrats!
Be sure to pour out a milk and Pepsi tonight.
Just don't drink one. It sounds more disgusting than a White Russian.
I'll just miss it, will be in NYC for the weekend but in Puerto Rico until Friday.
24: I recall being totally unable to get into Play Misty For Me when it was playing on daytime TV back when I was about 15.
I also recall reading a blog post somewhere comparing PMFM favorably to Fatal Attraction. The idea being that, as bad as bad as Jessica Walter's character was, PMFM nevertheless made it clear that Clint's character was kind of an asshole who was at least partially responsible for the whole thing, while Fatal Attraction more or less absolved Michael Douglas by making Glenn Close such a cartoonish family destroying monster.
It sounds more disgusting than a White Russian.
Well that's just, like, your opinion, man.
So is wanting a rug that isn't pissed on.
Oh shit the 19th is tomorrow, I somehow got it into my head that the 19th was Thursday. Do we have a venue for tomorrow?
Sadly, the quite conveniently located Guy Fieri's restaurant has closed.
Annie Moore's (in its relocated spot) is pretty convenient to the library, if that's where Barry is gonna be and not bad as far as local places (it's our go-to after work place). It's pretty much "generic Irish pub" as far as those things go, but on the nicer end of the scale.
(I'm trying to avoid recommending places right at Rockefeller/Times Square because...holidays)
If that's good for LB that's fine for me.
Others off blog are suggesting the Rum House
Unlike my ability to post like a normal human from my iPad.
I conclude Sam keeps rum in her bottom drawer.

With Play Misty for Me I thought there was lots of good or at least competent stuff, but all of it went on too long. Luscious long tracking shots of landscape, music, local color, but always held for too long.
I was also intrigued with the way it handled its two black characters. Both stereotypes, but I thought not necessarily negative ones -- middle-aged maid with a smart mouth, motormouth jazz DJ (more successful than Clint). They're essentially stock characters, just there to advance the plot, but given a lot more lines and character than strictly necessary, and made black when I see no particular reason to do so.
(Also I suspect the version I saw, on TV, has deteriorated in visual quality, which didn't help.)

Other suggestions include Bill's Bar and Burgers and the Russian Samovar
52 I also saw it on TV a very long time ago.
Also the Perfect Pint which judging by the menu I'm partial too, also seems likely to be slightly less crowded than Bill's Bar and Burgers but I'm not really sure.
Ok the Russian Samovar sounds good, someone tells me you can hear each other talk, the dumplings are amazing and the staff are chill. Let's do the Samovar.
I'll probably be there earlyish, say around 5ish to 5:30
I'll try to get there by circa 6. Please don't make fun of my colorful traditional garb.
I'll be there between 5:30 and 6, wearing a grey hat and my normal giant black glasses (see my twitter profile for a pic - @verysimple). See y'all soon!
I'm at the end of the bar since I appear to have beaten everyone here.
Stabbing is traditional, not beating.
67 looking very natty in a very fine suit
Thanks to all who came out: Sam, Flippanter, Blandings, jackmormon, LB, dagger aleph, and Tia. See you all in the summer.
