Re: Guest Post - Weekend Longread

...men would be put on pedestals and treated like a luxury scarce good instead of being consigned to a life with a growing risk of slavery-rape

I recall reading something along those lines as having happened in Post WW2 Russia. At least, they said it explained why Russian men were able to get away with drinking often enough to lower their life expectancy.

Male scarcity in post WW2 Russia and modern black America seems to result in higher degree of polygamy, as you'd expect.

This study https://unews.utah.edu/more-than-a-few-good-men/ among others suggests that excess males don't mean higher levels of violence but do mean more monogamy.

I remember reading that Chinese men are buying wives from North Korea, b/c of the imbalance. Also that in some parts of India, women are forced to become wives to more than one man, b/c of the shortage.

It's all horrifying. The only bit of silver I can see in all the clouds, is the change in prevailing attitudes amongst parents in China. I read that parents are starting to see daughters as "a warm comfortable blanket for our old age", where sons basically don't do that -- they move away to the cities and that's that. Atomized capitalism to the rescue, so to speak.

There is also a trade in Pakistani Christian women (who tend to be low caste) to China as wives for farmers, who they are told -- quite falsely -- are also Christian. Very good AP story by Kathy Gannon about it

". I read that parents are starting to see daughters as "a warm comfortable blanket for our old age", where sons basically don't do that -- they move away to the cities and that's that."

Your son's your son till he takes a wife but your daughter's your daughter all of your life, as the saying goes.
It's an interesting reversal of tradition because previously in China the son stayed in the household and brought his wife in to the family to be terrorised by her mother in law, but the daughter would leave and join someone else's household...

Also, it would be irresponsible not to speculate that PRC policies of forced Han-non-Han intermarriage in Xinjiang have something to do with non-Han having been exempt from the one-child policy; and to wonder what that might portend for the non-Han of the southwest, who thus far AFAIK haven't been subjected to the same kind genocide.

17: That's a common misconception, but cob is actually not an effective insulator. It is thermal mass, which can help if there is a sunny daytime before a cold night, but in a northern climate like here, you need to insulate a cob house with something not-cob.

Your son's your son till he takes a wife but your daughter's your daughter all of your life, as the saying goes.

My dad used to repeat this saying whenever someone would ask him (as some people would ask him, because some people are awful) whether he was "disappointed" that he had four daughters, but no sons. His other response: "I'm not a farmer. What would I want with sons?"

I found the article profoundly depressing, but was impressed by the courage and clear-sightedness of the 14-year-old schoolgirl protesters. I suppose they might give one hope?

Back when I was there, living in the Chinese equivalent of Huntington, WV, I had trouble finding a date that was remotely age appropriate. I was 33-34, and going out with 20 year olds, no problem, theoretically, but...Worst date of my life, got set up with a girl who turned out to be 20, have the same English name as my Mom, and her life's ambition was to work at Disney World.

If you're a young Chinese woman and you're not married by like 27, you are screwed, or at least that's how it used to be in the boonies. If demographics force that to change, it will do a lot of good for an enormous amount of people.

Or they could just kidnap minorities from neighboring dictatorships, whichever's easier.
