Smoking indoors permitted back then as well.
Although to this bit by LW, I must say that smoking was allowed at bars in Heebieville until probably 2010ish. And I can still think of a few where they look the other way.
You can still smoke in bars here. Or could when they were open last month.
the criterion channel, if you've got it, has a bunch of jean arthur movies available now, jean arthur is just amazingly outstandingly wonderful how did we ever deserve her?, watched the talk of the town for the first time yesterday prompted by farran nehme taking over their tw*tter account for not-too-much commentary, but eh didn't add much for me think it's just not my thing. the movie is really excellent. hilarious how the correct ending* was obvious but historically unavailable.
*ronald and cary, who have amazing chemistry, shack up, they all three move to d.c. and set up house together, ronald and cary provide advice and support as jean climbs the career ladder and then meets a great guy who realizes he's lucky there will always be four in their relationship - he get's jean arther *plus* her best friends, jean's kids are raised by 1 mom and 3 dads. hijinks ensue.
3. Thank you!!! do you keep letterboxd lists? Not bad for a defunct blog.
If anyone's unfamiliar, both Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton's films are reliably 1000% hilarious. Hal Roach produced Harold Lloyd's films, George Herriman wound up working on the Roach studio grounds I think.
The interplay between rhythms and conventions of print
(comics in the US, I think novels in France, who knows what for Dziga Vertov) and the rhythms and conventions of early film interests me a lot.
As a side note, Hellzapoppin' is really weird and great! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-mT0wowIn4
I guess not a side note, since this is now the classic Hollywood thread. Anyway, the frame narrative is wonderfully Looney Toons postmodern.
Jean Arthur is great and I wish I could get Criterion to work on Android tablets and Linux computers.
