Do Wordle words ever have more than one of the same letter? For example, "apple" or "reset"? I've tried the game a few times but haven't solved one yet.
I assumed not? You're allowed to submit those, though, to establish a location.
Do I have to figure out what a Wordle is?
I take back 2. I guess that's a mild spoiler for today.
3: It's literally just Mastermind with 5 letter words.
I guess it's not quite Mastermind, IIRC? In mastermind, you're just told that there exists a certain number of pegs that are correct in color, and that are correct in color and position, and you don't know which ones. Here it tells you which letters are correct, and which are in the correct position. But you get fewer tries.
Heh, just got it before seeing the spoiler, I swear.
6: You get fewer tries, and you can't guess entirely at random, you have to use real words. Mastermind seems easier than this. Maybe my opinion will changes after I solve more than one, though.
Jammies was trying out his first game last night, and he was like, "I literally can't think of a five letter word," which was both hilarious and also kind of relatable, although he's worst at it than I am.
Do I have to figure out what Mastermind is?
You have to guess what Mastermind is. I'll tell you how many of your words are correct, and how many of them are in the correct order, but you'll have to trial and error your way to a correct explanation.
If you're frustrated by only getting to play once a day, you can play Absurdle as much as you like. https://qntm.org/files/wordle/index.html
That is EXACTLY what I was hoping for!!
12 is rather interesting - it seems to completely eliminate the possibility of a lucky guess. I normally get Wordle in 4 goes but I've just tried Absurdle a few times and never got it in less than 8.
Yeah, the More Info page for Absurdle suggests that the optimal solution may be 4 words. But you definitely can't get it in one, as it is much less of a guessing game and more of a narrowing-down strategy game.
Interesting. So you want to start off with all your weird letters? Or still start off with something like "Heart"?
I managed to get 5 in absurdle, but it took some effort (maybe 30 minutes?). I'm not going to try to get 4.
And if you play an identical list, it will turn out identically every time.
Normal wordle with no limit per day:

There was one that was just four letter swears but I couldn't find the link again.
Wordle is run entirely on the client side so it sends you the whole 2315 word list and chooses today's word based on a difference since day x algorithm. So you can actually look at the source code and figure out the word for any given date:

You just type "STEAM" and go from there?
So, the US Supreme Court decided a case today, which is OT because it's Thursday.
Guy worked as a civilian for the Michigan National Guard, and was also a member of the national guard, and when he retired, he got separate pensions for his civilian service and his military service. When he applied for Social Security, they deducted for the civilian service pension but not for the military service pension, because that's what the statute says to do. Deduction was 100/mo. He complained, claiming that his civilian service should have counted as military service, and thus not deducted. Lost before an ALJ, lost on administrative appeal, lost in district court, lost in the 6th Circuit. And now lost in the Supreme Court.
I can't help but be impressed by the guy's persistence. I hope he paid his lawyers.
23: All for what couldn't be more than $48,000 (40 years of that pension), or with discounting at 2%, $33,000 present value? Yeah, persistent.

Agree with the OP on the the trumpet.
Wordle is great. We have a daily Wordle Slack thread at work and it's fun because
1) one per day means no demands on your willpower
2) your results are easily and cleverly shareable
3) the shared results tell a story for each person
4) each round is juuust hard enough
I tried Slack but failed to figure it out and now I make people text me.
If they complain, I point out that it doesn't cost ten cents anymore.
I agree with 29.1. Knowing there is only one a day let's me know it can't turn into a total time suck.
It's important to leave time for PokΓ©mon Go.
25- Disagree. Fucking piece of shit gave me "shag". I of course guessed fuck then shit and was thinking what other goddamn swear word starts with sh? First time I played it gave me "damn".
Also agree with 29.1. It's a small good thing.

In my head I can only pronounce the name Metalachi as though he's one of the minor prophets.
Is the quiet thing about Wordle that results can be disseminated via emoji?
A prophet is a prophet. You can get snooty when you have a chapter in the Bible.
Huh. Metalachi will be playing a few blocks from my house on Saturday.
It is past my bedtime though.
It was exciting to contemplate going out for a few minutes.
I bet if you asked nicely, your parents would allow it. Not a school night.
Maybe just open your windows? Maybe the trumpet will carry.

Trying to think of words that fit a _ _ e _ n (no b or c ) or whatever is like trying to walk on a slackline for me, requires weird concentration and memory muscles that I don't normally use and have a hard time with. Weird to enter into an imposed mind state that way.
And now the Supreme Court has decided a couple of pending motions -- granting (5-4) the government's motion to stay the order preventing the vax mandate for people in facilities funded by Medicare and Medicaid, and granting (6-3) the motions to stay the OSHA vax mandate. Roberts and Kav were in both majorities.
It's about whether Congress gave the agencies the power to do this, and those two saw it in the one case and not in the other.
Oops, already in the other thread.
49: When are they just going to find a way to completely dismantle the entire regulatory state, including OSHA?

2- rare but possible
3- luck and skill
4- solid effort
5- disappointing but reasonable
6- made it but feels bad
7+- give up
It's a small thing that's easy to ruin for others.
My problem is that I started with something like 3,4,4,3 and assumed it would always be that way. Not so much it turns out.
And worse my wife and kids now doing it and more generally more careful. Now a "feature" of our group text thread.
I have determined that a bi t of alertness helps. Last two nights I have awoken with insomnia and thought "I'll do the Wordle!" In both cases did a guess using a letter in ta place that had been ruled out.
Absurdle lends itself to all sorts of invented variations. Like "Disparition Absurdle" in which you are only allowed to use the letter E once, when you guess the correct answer. (If you use E in a guess and don't get five greens, you lose.)

Dunno if someone covered it earlier, but you can get a target word with repeated letters. You also don't have to reuse letters you've figured out, unless (I think) you are in "hard" mode.
I'm disappointed how easy it is to cheat, at least at the https://octokatherine.github.io/word-master/ version. You can just close and reopen or refresh the window to get a fresh puzzle without hurting your streak.
I'm putting so much time into this partly because I stopped playing World of Warcraft. AIMB, I played the game a lot. I stopped this week. Partly due to running out of interesting things to do in the game, partly due to ethical concerns about this. (That seems like an adequate reason by itself for a principled person to stop supporting the company but I had to admit I had to have less fun first as well.) I've put a little more time into writing, a little more time into reading, a little more time into real life, and a lot more time into this and 2048. It remains to be seen what my routine will look like in a month or two.
Halford shamed me into getting better at 2048.

69:. Your hint helped me get it in three.
Chill's wife gave me the idea that I could cheat, and post on Twitter day after day my results showing that I got it one try, and then I could become a world famous psychic, but then it occurred to me that this was very stupid.
1. Solve it on your phone in the usual 5 or 6 tries.
2. Go to your computer and solve it in one try.
3. ???
4. Profit!
In a bit, it will occur to you that something being stupid isn't a sufficient reason not to do it.
74: That was my plan, except in reverse. Solve it in normal way on computer, solve it one try on phone, and then post results on Twitter. Gradually more and more people would notice that I was getting it in one try every time. Then they would pay me lots of money to tell them where they would meet their spouse or whether they should take a job.
I have no interest in Wordle (no hate for it, just not my bag) but I have discovered sokoban puzzles and am obsessed with them.

What's the best theory for starting words? I've been trying to pick a set of two starting words that cover most of the vowels (and haven't decided if I prefer leaving out u or y from the first two), and that inclines me towards two vowels in the first word.*

I was using "outer". On this one I used "piano". Is adieu the only 5-letter word with 4 vowels?
Aiery, apparently. Alternative spelling of eyrie.
"'Aiery Potter, did you put your name in the goblet of fire?"
Audio.
I can't quite bring myself to start with adieu, but I like Audio better (even though the e is more common). Aiery also feels a little cheap, but seems very handy.
"Aaaaa" is the worst word to start with.
I've been starting with AERIE, thinking that a double E is a solid possibility.
I haven't figured out how double letters work yet.
Behind the green glass door there are bookcases but there are no libraries.
Behind the green glass door you'll find Billy and Agunnaryd but not PoΓ€ng or Ingvar.
What's the best theory for starting words?
There was a long Hackernews thread about this a few days ago. Mostly aiming for common letters in common positions, but I would have liked to see someone look into whether some combinations more helpfully narrow subsequent guesses, but that's more complex. And I don't think people were dealing with "hard mode," which I think is more fun.
Behind the green glass door are rabbits but no hares.

141: So much for my theory of the answer typically being the more obvious word.
My wife sort of used that principle today to help get it in 2. Wrongly it appears according to Google n-gram. But there was logic to it that I now realize could be a spoiler so not going to note it (but I guess even this could be a "third-level remove" spoiler).
150: I mean, if you'd rather discuss World of Warcraft, we can do it. If you want, I can link to the WoW subreddit or other major fan sites and you can see if they're having any more fun.
We're gonna need a smaller universe of discourse.
150: It's funny, 92 actually made me feel hostile for a bit. Over the years, back when this place was more active than it is, I felt strongly about keeping it open and welcoming to new people, understanding that it took a certain amount of courage to break into the conversation. And now some clown we don't know spams us with his Wordle score, without the courtesy of a single word to explain why we should care?

The grocery store yesterday was out of many things that I usually get, incoming snow storm on top of covid-related strains. I had to buy chicken that was labeled "Spatchcocked". But I suppose you never really know about the chicken's history even if it is not labeled.
140: Both.
My "strategy" is based on ETAOIN SHRDLU, allegedly the most frequent letters in written English in order.*
Opening word: ATONE, containing letters with frequencies 1, 2, 3, 4, 6. So every game begins with an act of atonement.
Second word: Add to the match letters, from ISHRDLU in order, skipping around as needed to make actual common words. If the first five are all duds, next word could be SHIRK (frequencies 5,7, 8, 9), or LURID (frequencies 5, 9,10, 11, 12).
Spoiler alert for today: Thus solving today's in 2.
*Although apparently this ordering is based on frequency in some sample of written English, not frequency in 5 letter words, so it's probably not optimal. E.g. H comes up in text frequently in THE, probably not as much in 5 letter words.
I forgot that I already played it this morning, and went to play it again, and I did really well. #humblebrag
The problem with word-in-one is that no one will believe you. The last small impetus for people to submit completely to the surveillance state will be the desire to have their wordle scores believed.
I ragequit Wordle when it wouldn't let me guess ERATO.
166: Oh, I could believe it. Someone said upthread that the words come from a pool of 10,000 or so, right? So the odds are something like 10,000 to one. Higher than the odds of winning something good in the lottery, and someone manages to do that most days. I just wouldn't care because it's purely a matter of luck.
166:. When Bill McKibben got "solar" on his first guess (as seen on Twitter) it was totally believable.
2315 words, and based on the date difference algorithm it seems likely it rotates through them all, so if you consistently play ATONE for the next 6 years there will be a magical day when you get it on the first try.
You'll feel so bad afterwards for wrecking the spirit of the game that you'll have to figure out some repetitive daily ritual to make up for it.

I think my strategy was different. My second row was completely different letters than my first. I was just looking to eliminate more letters.
Everyone I've seen today got it in three, even my 12 year old.

This is not allowed in hard mode (denoted by asterisk on the score).
Oh. I didn't know there was a fancy mode.
195: I didn't realize that either. I had already decided, that it was probably statistically best to always make a guess that could be the right answer. But sometimes you can save time, not guesses, by just choosing a word to eliminate letters.
System worked today.

I feel smart. But in fairness, the strategy in 163 seems well suited to today's word.
I had stopped commenting here when it dropped off the front page but I see others continued. I saved my scores for the intervening days on my own blog and I could post them now if people are really curious. Should there be recurring threads for this while it's a fad? Should they go in the Check Ins thread?
Anything can go in the check-ins thread, but I am not excited by the idea of threads devoted entirely to green/yellow grids.
202: I was going to say, "What's the point?"
But then I thought, "Why be such a prick?""
203: Yes, if you must post your green/yellow grids, at least keep them segregated.
I didn't post mine even though I only needed three tries.
It was only a matter of time before there was a math version

I wonder if they'll change the word list?
Few things get me as annoyed as the lack of a clear wordlist for the Spelling Bee.
210: Who can blame the guy for cashing in, but this is why we can't have nice things.
I wonder if this will set off some kind of tiny puzzle dot com boom. There hasn't previously been a way for a puzzle writer to make this kind of money. Of course getting popular at the level of wordle is quite difficult, but maybe more moderate success can also lead to being bought by the NYT puzzle juggernaut.
looking forward to when the times becomes a gaming company that just happens to publish a legacy newspaper
Gaming, movies, and sugar cereal test site.
(ie the world would be much improved if Jamelle became the NYT executive editor)
Sad about Wordle. Not sad that the creator got a nice payout, but just that everything good gets devoured.
