I have been forgetting to post this since sometime last week -- sorry about that. The kids were home and my job is giving me severe effluent-related agita. I am not feeling kindly toward civil engineers.
I'm very wary of human interaction for obvious reasons, but I can try!
There must be someplace nice to sit outdoors in the (nominally) fresh air.
3: Wait. Covid or just because humans?
JM and I would be up for it but unfortunately can only do Wednesday or possibly tomorrow, and then we're heading out of town.
5: We just got past a long hard bout of COVID at ours, my spouse's second. I've still got long COVID from March 2020. We're not really going anywhere.
Sorry to hear that and hope you make a complete recovery.
ouch awb lovely to hear from you & much much sympathy.
have a wonderful time in ny barry!
might as well gatecrash this thread - anyone in paris we're around & could possibly meet up for outdoor shady drinks tonight or possibly tomorrow midday. v insane vacation trip filled with odd work obligations that are fascinating but definitely contributing to my vast appreciation for the better half's good nature. faaaaaar too much time spent in the 8th & 1st ugh. escaping east every chance!
Wednesday may be possible but work is a colorful expletive madhouse into the evening hours lately so unpredictable.
So, Wednesday it is, and we need some kind of outdoor-seating bar. Barry, are you still heading for Penn Station at the end of the night?
Trash though it is, I bet there's some kind of big outdoor drinking area at Hudson Yards. Or anyplace else anyone has an idea for.
So, this thread seems the most appropriate place: I will be in NYC too, but not overlapping with Barry: only the following weekend, Friday 22nd through Tuesday 26th.
I've never actually been to Fresh Salt, so I might just pick a time, tell the thread when I'll be there, and see who can make it. But if anyone has ideas, I'm open.
18 ah too bad, I'm leaving on the 22nd
I haven't been to New York since 2003. I need to get out more. I've been thinking about how to do it and I'm wondering if driving to Harrisburg to catch the train isn't the easiest.
18: I work downtown Tuesday Wednesday and Friday, so those are the days I'd be likely to show up.
21: Unfortunately I get in Friday evening and leave Tuesday morning.
Eh, I'm not saying I wouldn't stretch a point to show up. But Fresh Salt, aside from all the Unfogged history, was selected way back in the day as convenient from my office rather than being a bar with any remarkable attractions of its own, and that's not operational these days other than Tuesdays Wednesdays and Fridays.
Any better ideas if it's Sunday or Monday?
I hear good things about Brooklyn.
Everyplace that comes to mind is up in my actual neighborhood, and I unfortunately basically live on the moon. But you should be driven by convenience for where you're staying, as long as no one's expecting me to go to Brooklyn.
Brooklyn is the setting for lots of great literature, like Knufflebunny or A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.
I've been thinking about how to do it and I'm wondering if driving to Harrisburg to catch the train isn't the easiest.
The train doesn't go to Pittsburgh?
And Welcome Back Carter, which is known for having one of the few positive portrayals of a Nebraskan on television in the 70s.
Do we have a venue and time?
I'm very sensitive to COVID concerns and I'm pretty cautious myself. I got my second booster about two weeks before coming back to the US and I'll take a rapid test tomorrow before I get on the train.
30: Is that a Family Guy reference, not a mistake? I should quit my stupid job and devote myself entirely to researching your jokes.
And even though I did watch Welcome Back Kotter when it was originally on TV (it was a sensation among 7th graders at the time) I did not remember that Mr. Kotter's wife was from Nebraska.
34: But it's such a great idea. A sit-com about Jimmy Carter going back to teach Sunday School after his Presidency ends. The series focuses on his attempts to reform a quartet of no-goodniks known as the Sweathogs.
I have a spec script for that, but what happens is a Secret Service agent shoots them.
Commenters by email are leaning towards Tiki Chick (IKR?) on Amsterdam and 85th. They have a lot of outdoor seating.
As always, lurkers welcome if there are any these days.
I'll likely be there a bit before 6
Many thanks to all that came out. See you next year!
