I've developed a slight discoloration right between my front middle two teeth. What I mean is that my entire set of teeth is a healthy yellow color and I'll drink coffee and diet coke forever, but the little bit between my front two teeth is newly darker in a way that's obvious to me.
I've never done any whitening thing, and assumed that you're weakening your teeth and that teeth-whitening is one of those things that most people truly don't notice in other people.
This random dentist in Australia includes this bit:
The hard outer layer of the tooth is called the enamel. Beneath this protective layer lies dentin which is a soft pulp. This soft pulp is darker than the enamel and causes discolouration of your teeth.
In order for hydrogen peroxide to whiten the teeth, it must pass through the enamel and into the pulp.
So it is actually the dentin and not the enamel that is being whitened. This pulp contains the nerves of the teeth and bleaching with peroxide can, therefore, cause tooth sensitivity.
and also this:
Intrinsic stains are created by the dentin in the teeth and affect the entire tooth. Extrinsic stains have external causes such as smoking or eating and drinking certain foods and beverages that can result in spots or stains on the entire tooth.
Intrinsic stains can effectively be treated with hydrogen peroxide whitening solutions. However, extrinsic stains affect the enamel and can, therefore, be much more difficult to treat.
It sounds like it's pretty futile. Clearly this is an extrinsic stain. I assume.
Anyway, how's your weekend?
My teeth are yellow too. I got very cold standing in the rain to help the mobility-impaired among the Fetterman fan, but am fine now.
I just got back from two weeks vacation in Portugal, where I'd never been before and is pretty awesome all in all.
2: Are you in the video Fetterman posted on Twitter of the yinzers in raincoats under the overpass?
3: went for my cousin's wedding in the fall of 2019 and agree that it's awesome.
2: I was scheduled to row in the local race (Head of the Ohio) but we ended up as a scratch due to a boat availability screw up. But frankly I was not too upset about that given the conditions.
2.1: Mine are fairly yellow. And was interested to see that when I recently got a bridge for my two front teeth (came loose right at the start of the pandemic and led to a long, expensive process including braces on my lower teeth) that they took pains to match the color of my other teeth with the fake ones. I guess not too surprising.
One time I had to get a filling on my front tooth, so they used this plastic-y stuff that looks like a regular tooth. The dentist held up a card to my tooth and said to the hygienist something like "Yellow 5". I asked if I was being insulted.
My youngest son now lives within about 1/2 mile of the boundary Great Smoky Mts. Nat'l Park. There have been increases in the bear population there, and his neighborhood in particular* is seeing a lot of bear activity this year. Recently, many mornings he wakes up to a set of cubs hanging out in trees at the edge of the property (sometimes two different sets)--and of course mama bear is lurking around nearby but generally unseen. They recently sent us a couple of pictures of their one-year-old in her high chair with bears (mother and two cubs) crossing their driveway in the background (photographer is right next to the high chair). Apparently they were setting up to eat outside when the bears sauntered across, so they retreated back inside but not before snapping a couple of pics. I am in the process of learning to be more careful with whom you share such pictures as although most find it amusing/interesting a few have been greatly alarmed and quite critical of the parents. I probably have not helped by making quips like, "You don't have to be faster than the bear, just faster than the baby." And in one she is looking at the camera with an expression that would be consistent with "So.. are you just going to stand there taking pictures or what?" Anyway, I did have the thought to not share with one of my relatives, but did so anyway, and sure enough....
My judgment may not be the best in such matters.
*I suspect it is a combo of being close to the park, having only about 1/3rd of the houses in their neighborhood rebuilt since the fires of 2016, and now a few years in their is good cover growing up in the burn area. Plus, just up the road is the top of a tourist chair lift with restaurant/snack bar and lots of food trash.
10.1 is very funny.
My dentist 30 years ago decided to be optimistic and make my fake tooth slightly whiter than my actual teeth, which were, you know, Yellow 5 or something. He must not have thought things through because actual teeth as the years go by don't get *less* yellow.
"You don't have to be faster than the bear, just faster than the baby."
I laughed.
Why wouldn't the bear just get you and then come back for the baby at leisure?
Bears raised in unstable environments will just go straight for the baby. It's a little sad, really.
Don't they eat their kids if the mothers don't drive them away?
My favorite bear statistic is that one year, 2018 or so, Himalayan Spotted Bears were responsible for 100% of bear attacks on humans in Pennsylvania.
We would have also accepted "How can mountains see a bear?"
I recently hiked an 85-mile loop trail in northern Pennsylvania and saw lots of bear scat but no bears. Did see salamanders and grouse.
STS (translation: Susquehannock Trail System)
I got to get out in the woods again. Between work and hip pain, I haven't been out in a long time. I'm going to try to hit the Quehanna trail. STS is a longer drive.
I even bought a new tent but I haven't sealed the seams yet.
Seam sealing - a tedious task with big benefits.
Huh. I've never sealed the seams. But I can't remember the last time I camped in the rain, either.
They should sell tents with seams that come pre-sealed.
Most tents have sealed seams. Ultralight tents from smaller manufacturers often don't.
Something to do with the different fabric.
It rained 2 of the 6 days I was on the STS so sealed seams brought peace of mind...
11. I have always been told that yellow teeth are generally stronger than white teeth, heavy smokers excepted. My own are fairly white, though, and seem fit for purpose.
Chocolate is a superfood! Red wine is the secret to a long life.
I guess, if you're too basic for matcha.
Well, I held out a long time, but today I tested positive for COVID. I've been feeling sick for a few days, mostly a sore throat and cough. I took a rapid test last week when I first started getting symptoms and it was negative, so didn't think much of it. I had a regular checkup with my doctor today and since I was still feeling sick I went ahead and had them do a PCR test, and it was positive. So I'll be home for the rest of the week.
Get well. Remember to stay away from the horse de-wormer.
Don't listen to Moby. Rewormer's the one to avoid.
COVID. Can't recommend it.
Have you checked to see if you're eligible for Paxlovid? You might be too healthy but who knows.
42: They asked if I wanted to look into it but it's been a while since my symptoms started, and they're pretty mild, so I declined.
If you were cop, you'd want Ivermectin.
Some of those who work forces, want the paste that's for horses.
I have a nontraditional student, maybe 50, with a tattoo of a cop car on his forearm, which faces me every time he rests his arm on his desk. And he wore a Let's Go Brandon shirt the other day. I don't generally have to interact with MAGA types in an ongoing way, so this sticks out. He's sensible enough to act like a cooperative, normal adult in class - even likable. It's a very weird, creepy world out there, kids.
45: I stole it, but I couldn't find a way to link to the original.
46: is it really that weird that someone you think disagrees with you politically behaves in a civil fashion?
"Let's go Brandon" is just another way of saying "Fuck Joe Biden." I would not expect someone wearing yet shirt to be civil.
10: Received new bear content from my son's place. This one is a short video of two bear cubs (but fairly sizable ones as I guess they are this time of year) frolicking on a swing hammock in their yard.
48/49: What Moby said. By wearing a shirt like that, they're escalating it. He can disagree and leave his opinions in his private life, like I'm doing.
He actually is doing that - he's perfectly civil and pleasant in class. We get along fine. But the contradiction is the aggressive presentation.
They're going to have to shoot those bears, aren't they?
Not if they always keep a drop baby at the ready.
52: More comfortable sharing this bear video here. I think it should be available to all (or maybe need a gmail account?), I have lost the flickr account/info.
Kind of a long shot though. Maybe he can move in a bit?
I mean, that really is extremely cute. I don't see a problem.
At Jammies' grandmother's memorial, there was a series of photos from camping, mid-60s, where the family is hanging out with a very nice family of bears who have learned to come socialize for food. They're all petting the cubs and hanging out, and feeding them, of course. I guess I hadn't realized that the "don't feed the bears" campaign was actually a campaign in response to a prior time when the idea was "be sure to feed them because they're so dang cute and cuddly!"
It would be more cute if there was a baby in the shot. Like the family that put honey on their baby to get the bear in close.
I kind of wish I could have gone camping just once with cuddly bears, before we wised up.
I tried to find a link to the story referred to in 63, but all I found is a link to the 404 page at Snopes. So I guess it's perfectly safe to smear a baby with food near bears.
