Maybe the UAW wins and I'll buy another American car?
When my current one dies. I don't have room for three cars.
I have a proposition for you.
Hope we get more union penetration as a result! A politically-aware acquaintance was bowled over when I said it was flat/down statistically (10.1% in 2022, lowest on record) - she just assumed all the strikes in the news must have been indicative of unionization on the rise.
Apparently one of the things that happened in California specifically to push the studios to a deal was the legislature passing unemployment benefits for striking workers, which would be a bit of a game-changer (even if it would have a time limit). But Newsom could still veto it, he's been upping the hippie-punching lately.
4 is really interesting. 15 years of deflation.
10:Thanks.

I don't want to buy a Korean car. Too easy to steal.
Its better to buy. Just because you can steal one doesn't mean you should.
I guess that would save me from trying to figure out TikTok.
The next thread will be called Ball, something about a football star dating a pop star more famous than he is, and the following thread will be called Out, about Menéndez resigning.
"Balls Out: My Legal Strategy That's Been Working" by Senator Menendez.
Well, according to much of the media TFG will be supporting the UAW members by speaking at a non-union facility (latter usually not mentioned). NYT did a piece talking about his "mixed" support of unions and somehow could not find a way to fit the non-union shop bit into their story.
Those bored, "savvy" fuckwads are just so precious these days.
OK, two more recent articles in the NYT did acknowledge that it was non-union. In the event there were far more people in attendance and than the 150 who work there, so basically a small Trump rally hosted by the owner of the place. There were a number of folks with Union Members for Trump and similar signs, but two interviewed by the Detroit Free Press admitted they were not Union members and/or autoworkers.
Still in looking for those activities I came across this other of theirs article from Wednesday about Biden's visit which was still claiming: It comes a day before Donald Trump is expected to speak to union members in Detroit instead of participating in the second Republican primary debate. It's good to have on newspaper with sufficient resources to uncover hard-to-find details.

7: Also yes. Showing tonight at 7:30pm at the Babylon near Alexanderplatz. Can you get here by then?
Showing Sunday at 1100 at the Eslite near Sun Yat-sen. Can you get here by then?
18- I don't think there is an accent, that was just autocorrect deciding there should be.
19, 20: Although as someone on Bluesky pointed out the framing of the actual report after the speech was workers "affected by the United Automobile Workers strike" the acknowledgement of the non-union facility came deep in the story.
I (or my phone) was just trying to help him play up his argument that prosecuting someone of Hispanic heritage for blatant bribery is racist.
How does one even convert gold bars into useable currency? A pawn shop? Just walking into a bank with a brick of gold seems like it would raise questions. I feel like in the end you have to go back to the shady people who bribed you in the first place, and then you're just double paying service fees.
21 afterwards you can see some of the locations
I enjõy how easy my phone makes ît to put fűnny marks on my vőwels.
Very reasonable fees. Not shady at all. We insist on well-lit premises.
22: Do I need a visa, and can you send tickets? I have Monday and Tuesday off, so work is not an issue.
29: Yes! Home-field advantage.
The murderous brothers use the accent mark, I guess your phone knows your proclivities and assumes you're talking about them.
28. The US mint has a network of authorized dealers for their gold, many of them also buy and sell bars. Probably he'd have to call ahead rather than walk in. There's a form to be filled out above I think $1k, not an anonymous cash transaction. Also, Indian and east asian jewelers definitely sell bulk gold, again probably need to call to see how much they'll buy. How long for a busy pawnshop to buy a kilo of gold in jewelry? I'd guess that's a normal week.
The near-universal trust in banking here in the US surprises me-- capital controls are one of the first steps in autocracy. I understand that it's either crooks (and Menendez is one) or idiots who even mention this now. To me it seems like thinking about fresh water sources in the event of widespread power outages, unlikely but possible.
"How does one even convert gold bars into useable currency?"
It must be possible because otherwise how would John Wick buy socks and dog food and kitchen towels. The Continental and the various weapon-sommeliers and bulletproof-suit-tailors I can believe, but I refuse to believe that Ian McShane and Lance Reddick also operate their own Tesco Metro.
I no longer need dog food. Sad emoticon.
37: Also :( but not entirely unexpected.
26: What's maddening about that is that that phrasing should be the campaign spin that the press exposes and pundits deride, but instead they're just happy that they figured out a way to maintain the false equivalency. Phew!

Republicans regard Trump, to the same extent as Pence, as a person of faith.
Trump got lower marks, though, among evangelicals. Among Republicans, he was found to be a person of faith by 53%, where Pence was at 52%. Among evangelicals, Pence outscored Trump, 65% to 37%.
That suggests to me that evangelicals tend to have a specific religion-based view of faith that isn't shared by Republicans at large.

Dianne Feinstein has died. Who will Newsom appoint and how does this affect the race?
Never did M to her.

43: they don't really. They just give the pro Trump answer. They don't care if it's true or not. Ask them to bet money on their answer being right, then you'll see what they really think.
If it had happened a year ago, he would most likely have appointed Barbara Lee, but now that it's so close to the election, he signaled it would be a non-running caretaker, e.g., not her. He still has an active promise to appoint a Black woman. (It can't have helped that Lee lashed out at him after he made this clarification.) Some possibilities are Sec. of State Shirley Weber, LA Supervisor Holly Mitchell, Asm. Mia Bonta (the AG's wife), State Controller Malia Cohen, or Rep. Maxine Waters.
43/45: More evangelicals may be comfortable answering Trump isn't religious while still supporting him, because they have the King Cyrus mental gymnastics, that he's God-sent despite being personally immoral.
(Although I'm not sure if this poll was separating out white evangelicals - it doesn't seem to be just evangelical Republicans at least. That could be the better reason.)
46: those are all boring! What about Oprah? Does she live in California?
None of the Republican candidates for senate in Pennsylvania live in Pennsylvania.
46: Maxine Waters is awesome. I would not want her in a caretaking role.
50: She's in a safe district and 85 years old. It could be a graceful capstone to her career.
Specifically, Waters is so safe the same Republican faced her in four consecutive general elections (2016-2022) even as he was convicted of misdemeanor stalking in 2016, jailed for felony stalking in 2019, went Qbert in 2020, and was indicted on 43 federal counts of campaign finance fraud two days ago.
Honestly, naming a Black woman in a caretaking roll is just a terrible idea--it can't be anything other than tokenism. Or at least it will always look that way.
That said, Waters is 85 and has been in the House for over 30 years. Giving her the seat for 15 months as a sort of valedictory wouldn't be a problem, if she wanted it.
50, 51: She'd have more to do in the Senate majority than in the House minority.
More unsurprising news from anti-Trump GOP groups doing message testing - the message barely matters because:
Even when voters are shown something "otherwise objectionable to primary voters, they find a way to rationalize and dismiss it." If you don't make clear that the messenger is someone who once supported Trump, "the viewer will automatically put their guard up, assuming the messenger is just another Trump-hater whose opinion should be summarily dismissed."
Honestly, naming a Black woman in a caretaking roll is just a terrible idea--it can't be anything other than tokenism. Or at least it will always look that way.
In fairness, when he made the pledge it seemed more likely that it would result in a permanent new Senator who was a Black woman. And now it would look back to go back on it.
I am relieved to see the pieces saying that she wasn't enviro coming out.
I really hate the pearl clutching around speaking ill of the dead.
It's easy not to fear the dead when you live in sunny California. But within two blocks of me is a very creepy graveyard that is probably haunted.
I see high potential for a Jarndyce v Jarndyce situation with the disposition of Richard Blum's trust, between her one kid and his three kids. It was already brewing with a lawsuit over her medical expenses before she died.
Clever: a friend suggested Newsom should appoint Lateefah Simon, the anointed heir to Barbara Lee. Then she gets elected November 2024 and switches from caretaker Senator to lifelong Representative.
The only problem is it would tick Barbara Lee off even more.
