Who is the Aunt Becky of the Chinese?
You know, as opposed to all the other Tibets.
Modern Humorist, back before the internet was ruined, used to have a banner ad "Free Tibet*
* With purchase of second Tibet or equal or greater value."
I'm sure that was extremely amusing at the time but those over-earnest liberals getting in the way of buying stuff from China turned out to be dead right, didn't they?
(On the substantive OP, I think the point is more that whatever you say about tests, they're less racist than your longstanding commitment to the lacrosse team or your exquisitely crafted personal essays.)
My understanding was that ditching the SATs at wealthier universities was a response to the disturbing tendency of Jews and Asians to do better at SATs than the preferred candidates were managing, and replacing them with lacrosse essays was a good way to ensure that the preferred lacrosse-playing candidates still got in.
What amused me was that we have essentially a periphery selling rich metropolitans continued access to metropolitan riches. First time I can remember seeing that.
8: COVID, plus that, plus an attempt to preempt SCOTUS' ruling on AA.
Also, I think even when the tests were required most students were doing them anyway.
9: I know more than one family currently living in England who are planning to relocate to Scotland in the near future so their currently early-teen kids get their university tuition paid by the Scottish government; if they stayed in England they'd have to pay tuition themselves.
12 isn't exactly parallel, now I think about it, because the Scottish government only pays your tuition if you go to university in Scotland. English kids in Scotland, English kids in England, and Scottish kids in England all have to pay for themselves.
I think 11 is missing a 'not'. If so, that was my experience also.
Anyway, SAT tutoring really didn't seem to improve his score much, but I don't know how much it cost because I'm bad at service work.
I wonder if this means GREs are coming back? Boy that would make my job a lot easier!
I think 8 isn't really right. Extracurriculars and essays were weighted more heavily for those reasons, but that was decades ago. The test thing is more recent and was Covid logistics plus activist pressure post-Floyd.
Small liberal arts colleges are certainly dedicated to keeping their sports teams from not sucking.
But sadly, due to Brexit, Europeans no longer get free college in Scotland.
17: yes, that first one is probably what I was half-remembering...
