Re: Guest Post: Substack music writing

Nick! I had a Music League induced earworm last night, and ended up watching this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CF4PBYk3QWI&t=1s I think you'll really enjoy the music theory midsection.

The chord progression stuff, I mean.

Off-blog, NickS and I are playing the same Music League game. My selection for this week was Ode to Billie Joe. I'll find out what NickS picked in an hour or so.

I appreciate you inviting me; I am enjoying though I have also described it, at one point, as "a machine for making me me second-guess myself."

But I'm curious if anyone reads or responds to any of the links in the OP before I saw more about it.

Opportunity to post Henry Kaiser's haunting version of "Ode to Billie Joe" with Cary Sheldon doing a great job on vocals.

And bonus Kaiser and Richard Thompson doing "Annihilation in Allah".

Possibly on topic, I enjoy "What Makes This Song Great", even when I don't particularly care for the song analyzed.

I do enjoy his channel, even if I don't always agree with Beato's views on music (he leans a bit boomer-ish for my taste).

I feel a little bit resistant to Beato, and it seems churlish. He's clearly knowledgeable and informative and good at explaining music and even though his taste in music isn't the same as mine, I usually learn things from his videos -- it's just that I was vaguely aware of him a youtube "brand" before I watched any of the videos and it just made it harder to be excited about it.

A colleague has been experimenting with AI generated music for official use, and the result is both awful and unnervingly catchy. I've heard one song four times now, as he works on the video, and every time it is stuck in my head for the next 45 minutes.

Music League

Coincidentally, I just saw a note about one of the songs from this week:

Miles Davis heard another single, "Time After Time," and regarded it as one of the best pop songs ever, covering it on his 1985 album, "You're Under Arrest."

In her memoir, Lauper said:

"[T]he most honored I ever felt was when Miles Davis covered [Time After Time]. I never wanted him to meet me either because I thought, if he didn't like me (like most of the old-timers), he wouldn't play my song anymore, and the way he played it was pure magic."

Thank you for this. Nostalgia is dangerous, but music blogs were so wonderful.

I have especially fond memories of Moistworks, glad there's an archive of the words. There were a few great roots music blogs as well, away from my own computer to look for links. I'm glad to see there are substack descendants and yours in particular.

9: fortunately you can always sling the versificator output down the memory hole as long as you don't let the telescreen see you.
