Well, I, for one, never believed in the Theory of Himalayan Degradation.
I followed a few of the links, and it looks like the Theory of Himalayan Degradation had its problems, but the degradation was halted by a shift to conservation efforts based on working with the local population. It was real, but it was not inevitable. This sounds too much like the debunking of The Population Bomb which was less a debunking than an acknowledgement that a timely warning and a change in tactics could avoid the worst.
(The latest Himalayan panic involves global warming, and I remember reading an article on teaching farmers how to maximize retained snow from the winter season to compensate for warmer weather. I suppose someone will debunk global warming some day if we manage to stop and reverse it.

The "Did Jimmy Carter Die Today" account missed the call.
16: That was my half-assed theory - something we knew compounded by malnutrition and and worsening availability of good quality medical care. Relieved it's something theoretically well-understood.
