I admit I don't really read many political blogs, but I thought I'd see this New Yorker piece more widely commented on (by which I mean, "commented on at all"). I mention it here because it's apropos to Bob's post.
Dude. Metonymies?
I had to look that one up to be sure (meta plus nomen), and I never need to look things up.
Perhaps that's part of the reason that we've lost working class voters to the GOP. If you can't understand the message, you can't agree with it. And nobody likes to feel stupid.
Time to take the vocabulary quiz, LarryB. Anyway, metonymy isn't the message, it's meta.

And (and!), we're practically addicted to talking about metonymy and synechdoche around here.
I like to accuse people of psychological synechdoches. This doesn't really relate, i just thought i'd mention it.
