Is there supposed to be a link in that post (i.e. what the hell are you talking about?)?
You need a link here? Sad sad sad. You didn't spend your youth in front of the television, watching Buck Rogers?
Not that twiki. Are you guys pulling my leg? Do you really not remember Twiki?
I'd like to claim that Buck Rogers had a long and interesting history before that awful tv show, but the fact that as much as I might elaborate upon it, he's always been an awful storyline, with awful characters, and awful bits and pieces. And, my goodness, it's taken nearly a century to compile such deep and heaping and sucking piles of crap.
Speaking as a former vaguely professional sf editor, and all.
Sorry. Not exactly, say, Geoff Ryman, Chip Delany, Kim Robinson, or whomever, you know.
Heck, even for nice popcorn, I still like Enterprise, though, to be sure, there's a lot of nostalgia involved there, as well, as obviously is your Twiki-involvement, since no other connection could possibly be involved.
Okay, I got it; you liked Erin Gray; fair enough, but there's, y'know, the cute girl, and a vaguely.... hmm, no, you're right, for most of us guys, the cute girl is enough.
Yes, I had a big crush on Erin Gray. And I do think the Twiki/Dr. Theopolis analogy is good, but I can't remember anything else about the show at all.
Glad you're back.
I watched a fair amount of television growing up, although always on the low low side of the ever-rising national average. But I guess I just missed Buck Rogers. I googled and found out all about it and it didn't ring a bell. At all. Most of my viewing was afterschool stuff, not evenings, which explains why the only episode of Dallas I've ever seen is the "Who Shot J.R.?" finale.
Despite the after-school emphasis, I also have only seen about two Brady Bunch episodes in my life, and about the same number of Partridge Family, and tend to have a hard time keeping the two straight. I just kind of smile and nod my head when the references come up, as they seem to often in my cohort.
Now on Gilligan's Island arcania, I'm your go-to guy. Also Warner Bros. cartoons.
it all makes sense. erin grey is the fresh-faced girl next door type. princess ardala wore too much makeup, didn't she ogged? and heels, probably? after a few more years of blogging we'll all know more about ogged's pschyco-sexal life than his own analyst! beedeebeedeebeedee /twiki
I remember Duck Dodgers.
Ogged, maybe you should set up a personal looking for girls who can catch this reference. Then you wouldn't have to wait for air flights. And you won't have to worry about her being too young.
Truly Belle, I think we've already passed that point.
Mitch, your viewing habits are mystifying. Which are the Warner Bros. cartoons?
Basically the rules in my house growing up where that we could watch some TV after we got home from school, about an hour's worth. Usually it was Gilligan's Island (I think my older brother was actually the real fan) and cartoons. My parents watched the news at six o'clock and then the TV was off for the evening. We ate dinner and then did homework or played or whatever. Dickensian, I tell you.
We got to watch the Friday evening line-up, so I've seen far too many episodes of Loveboat and Fantasy Island. Also Saturday morning cartoons.
Warner Brothers cartoons were the Bugs Bunny / Daffy Duck / etc. ones. The older ones are far better than the more recent ones. Many were made to be shown before the main feature at the movie theater , i.e. they were aimed at an adult audience, and full of clever references, not just slapstick.
Oh, and just so you know, WB did the Road Runner cartoons too, which pretty much suck, except for that one that gets all meta with the two little boys watching it on TV and feeling sorry for the coyote.
An interesting plate of shrimp: while googling trying to figure out your post, I discovered that the voice of Twiki was done by Mel Blanc, who voiced many of the WB cartoons voices, including that of Daffy Duck in "DUCK DODGERS, in the TWENTY-FOURTH and a half CENTURY!"
