later, chipmunk cheeks. Maybe we can swap horror stories when you return.
Mine came out no problems, but I guess if you've gone so long without having them out they're only now coming out because some problems have manifested? Hopefully they aren't coming in upside-down.
So, if they take out your wisdom teeth, do you become a Wingnut?
Oy. Much sympathy, and do take the pain killers and don't be shy about asking for something stronger if you need it.
yes, it really hurts without pain killers.
I didn't get mine out 'til I was 32, so they had honkin' enormous roots. The surgeon said it was a difficult extraction, though they didn't have to cut them out. Nonetheless, I only took the painkillers the day of the surgery and the next morning, I was neither swollen nor bruised and went back to work unmedicated. So it does happen.
For me, the worst part was those damn dissolving stictches they leave in your mouth, because they don't so much dissolve as rot, with the lovely taste that accompanies such a process. Blech.
Best of luck on yours, amigo.
About two years ago, I had to get a root canal, and I was aghast at how little my dental insurance covers. The dentist's people told me that dental insurance numbers (max benefit/year, deductibles, etc.) haven't truly been updated in a decade or two.

Ah, wisdom teeth out. The bad breath, the blood-soaked gauze, the vomiting from the pain killers, the suppositories to stop the vomiting....
Good times.
(Hope it goes better for you than it did for me.)
Getting my wisdom teeth out was EASILY the most miserable experience of my life.
Mine weren't too bad--like apo, no bruising or swelling. So there's hope. Or maybe I just want to gloat over all the rest of you. (Yeah, that's all I got to gloat on, lame, isn't it?)
OMG, it's life imitating blogging! bphd, this is your fault.
I was aghast at how little my dental insurance covers
I take it back - that was the worst part of getting my teeth out. I was double-covered, too. When the revolution comes and my reign begins, the insurance execs will be first against the wall. No blindfolds.
bphd, this is your fault
No, it's Fontana's fault. If he hadn't posted about sofas, they wouldn't be torturing Ogged right now. He freed the outrage.
If Matt can gloat about having a painlfree wisdom teeth extraction then I can gloat about having no wisdom teeth. Evolution, baby!
(hope it goes well, Ogged. That totally sucks)
Hey, it wasn't I who invoked the dentist. Ogged brought this upon himself.
She says, blaming the victim.
Ogged, I think I told you, in a non-gloating way, that my experience (at 20) was not so bad-- pills the first night, no need for painkillers after that. I hope your experience is similar.
If you want to gloat, on the other hand, keep in mind that my job doesn't offer dental. You know where I work: gape in amazement.
I can gloat about having no wisdom teeth
Be glad you evolved in that direction. The girlfriend prior to my current wife (renowned here as the insane blonde) had one set removed, then another full set grew in. She had those removed and - I kid you not - two more grew in on the top for a grand total of ten wisdom teeth.
for a grand total of ten wisdom teeth.
Well no wonder she was insane. Were you her boyfriend during each extraction?
Oh and good luck with everything ogged.
By the way, are you and/or Fontana going to post about y'all's freaky post-victory chatroom extravaganza last night? Or was it one of those "what happens here, stays here" kind of things?
You'd think it would be eminently blogable, but basically, when you get seven or eight people chatting, it's hard to know what the hell is going on. Still, maybe Fontana can make something of it.
When I got mine taken out the drugs they gave me were immensely enjoyable. Oh, until I woke up at midnight in a percocet induced stupor somehow sure of the fact that I had but an hour to live. Yeah, ummmmm, maybe you can find a cheaper surgeon? Mexico has top notch health care professionals at cutrate prices.
Eh...do everyone's wisdom teeth have to come out? Mine are still in, I'm (relatively) long-in-tooth, and you guys are freaking me out. I mean, do they have to give you a problem before they pull them, or is it just something everyone does (like circumcision)?
The girlfriend prior to my current wife (renowned here as the insane blonde)
That's not a very nice thing to say about your wife.
Tim, ask your dentist to take some x-rays. One of my top wisdom teeth came in and cracked in half, so that had to come out. On the bottom, they had come in sideways, as in perpendicular to the adjacent teeth, so they had to come out or they would have knocked other teeth out too. It's possible that you either had enough room, or they came in in such a way that they're not causing trouble; but it's also possible that they're pushing against good teeth and will cause problems when you're older still and really don't want to be dealing with having them taken out.
Mitch, the post-blogging chat was insane. Way too much fun. You shoulda been there.
Ogged, I figured you'd be blogging. I mean, what else can you do when your mouth is stuffed full of bloody gauze?
You don't have to answer that.
At least you're conscious. You're already fareing better than some of us did.
I really feel pretty damn good. The problem, as ever, is keeping me sufficiently fed. But they only took out one side today, so I can even chew a little bit. Bring on the scrambled eggs!
do everyone's wisdom teeth have to come out?
I was planning on leaving mine in, because they weren't bothering me. I had an episode in my early 30s where they made one of my front teeth insanely painful by compressing it and making it turn slightly sideways to accomodate the squeeze. Once it turned enough, the pain went away and I thought that was that. My dentist informed me, though, that they hadn't fully erupted and would likely just rot up under the gums if I didn't get them yanked.
I mostly agreed to it for the drug experience, to be honest, but that was a total letdown. They knock you out, wake you up briefly to walk you to the car, then you go back to sleep again. And Demerol is nothing to get excited about either. Sigh.
Were you her boyfriend during each extraction?
No, the first two preceded me and those, combined with two episodes of a broken jaw being wired, left her with an intense aversion to dentists. After we'd dated a year, I pretty much forced her to go get a checkup and cleaning for the first time in years, because (one of my neuroses) it started to freak me out that I was kissing someone who hadn't seen a dentist in that long. She had previously refused, and I quote, "because every time I go, they tell me I'm growing more teeth that they have to pull out."
After convincing her that there was really no way it could happen again, she found a dentist that would use nitrous for cleanings, because she got panicky otherwise. As you've already guessed, he told her she had two wisdom teeth coming in on the top. Though we haven't spoken in a couple of years now, I'm quite sure she has never been back to a dentist since and that both teeth are still in her mouth today.
I'm quite sure she has never been back to a dentist since and that both teeth are still in her mouth today
Sounds like the punchline to a redneck joke.
Hmmm, maybe a fusion of blonde jokes with redneck jokes will be the next big thing . . .
I did Ben, thanks. Thinking about blogging it, though I'm sure baa will tell me there's nothing to worry about...;)
Ogged, sometimes the extraction really doesn't hurt that much -- I had all four out a few years ago, and was a little woozy in the afternoon, and absolutely fine the next day.
So, good on you for having that kind of experience.
Ogged - glad to hear that you're doing well, and I hope the other side goes as easily. And, as a bonus, perhaps the loss of bony mass will improve your bouyancy and thus your swimming. (Yeah, clutching at straws here...)
Maybe it'll be like kids: if the first one's easy and you get cocky, the second one is guaranteed to be a brat. Or so they say.
Aren't you glad I'm around to say things like that?
Nobody has mentioned dry sockets? I hear they know how to better prevent them these days.
I had two dry sockets and they are awful. They zig-zag pack them with gauze tape soaked in some antiseptic crap. The thrill o' the day is them reaching in with tweazers and, ZZIIPP, pulling out the old gauze to expose the bare nerve before packing in the new reeking gauze. I think there were three or four days of that before the open wounds finally closed.
Hey, somebody ask me about my Vasectomy date with old Sparky. It is a very funny story.
Hey Tripp, tell us about your Vasectomy date with old Sparky.
i get all 4 of my wisdom teeth taken out neeked week and i am scard to death about it.
what all do they do
Kim, it's really not so bad. Most likely, they'll put you to sleep, so you won't feel anything while it's happening. When you wake up, you won't feel any pain, because of the drugs. You'll be bleeding a bit in your mouth, but that's not so bad; just keep some gauze on it and it will stop after a few days.
Really, I was super-scared before I had it done, but it turned out to be more of a hassle than anything else. You'll have to eat soft foods for a while, but it doesn't hurt nearly as much as you think it will. Good luck!
what kind of soft food?
how long will i bleed ?
how long will i swell for?
ho do the cut out 4 impacted wisdom teeth?
I had lots of yogurt and soup. And I bled (just a bit, more damp than really bleeding) for a couple of days. Swelling was there for a few days. It wasn't so bad. I don't know how they cut out the teeth, and I really don't want to know.
Root beer floats are pretty easy on the teeth.
any thing else that you can tell me about it?
i wish that i was doing it with my family but i dont live with them and i am scard to death.
Let me ask you a question, kim. What is it that really scares you? Tell us that, and we'll probably be able to give you a better answer.
having to go under and thim cuting in to my gums?
and all the other stuff that could happen?
Ok. Going under is a breeze. You'll lie down, they'll either give you some gas or an IV, maybe both, and in a few minutes, you'll be blissfully asleep. I've been put under six or seven times in my life, and you'll be fine.
And the nice thing about being put under is that you don't have to feel or think about them cutting into your gums. You just have to deal with the stuff afterwards, like the yucky taste in your mouth, and maybe some pain; but they'll give you some great painkillers.
Let us know how it goes, kim. All the best.
When I had mine done, it took about 45 minutes, from start to finish. How old are you, kim? That might make a difference.
Aha, that's great! The younger you are, the less it hurts and the faster you recover. As you get older, the roots grow and make it harder to extract the teeth. But when you're young, the teeth come out easily, and your body heals much more quickly. 16 is about as young as you can be when you have your wisdom teeth taken out.
I would guess that it will take about an hour, and you'll be on your way home.
The only other thing I can think to tell you is that I was super scared before I had mine taken out too, but it turned out to be much much easier than I thought it would be.
Remember to come back and tell us how it went.
Also, the younger you are, the less likely it is that your teeth are really coming in ass-backwards and a bad problem's developed (either that, or they're doing it so young that your teeth have already started to mess you up--I'm not an orthodontist). Do you know the state of your teeth? Mine were coming in basically perfectly straight, and they came out like a breeze. I didn't even need the painkillers.
i will write back tomorrow to tell you all when i have my wisdom teeth cut out all 4.
Kim, a while back I had 5 impacted wisdom teeth removed. Had a freaky extra one. I can tell you that it's not going to be bad at all. Frankly, it's very annoying after they're taken out—your mouth is full of weird materials, and you have to make sure not to get food stuck back there—but it's not really very painful.
My advice is to buy lots of comic books or rent lots of dumb action movies while you're sitting around recovering (and drooling).
i get them taking out on 1-26-05
does any one now what they do and what they put in the iv
what else can you do when you try to heal?
what is a eye tooth ,milk tooth(i was reading stuff about wisdom teeth when this came up in the informattion)?
Kim, time to suck it up. Different doctors use different combinations of drugs in the IV. They all work pretty much the same way. All you have to do is change the gauze for a while after the extraction, and keep yourself fed and hydrated. The rest takes care of itself.
Do it hurt to get your wisdom teeth pulled cause, I'm very easy to cry boo hoo hoo!
I'm just playin I got to g-o so I'll holla at cha lata!
I suspected this conversation was headed toward this resolution.
You think Kim has been playing us all along?
I don't know. But it was sho nuff painful to read her writing. Worse than when I got my wisdom teat out (I'm llergic to the painkillaz). Can we put spell check in the comments?
