Sorry to post an on-topic comment, but it does seem that this has to be part of the explanation. GR's posting habits suggest that he just leaves the window in the background, adding a post every time he checks his mail. That's why I was so surprised to hear that he's got a book contract-- it's not the kind of style that inspires confidence in a much longer, slower format.
Oh, there's plenty of evidence that he doesn't really read a lot of what he posts about. But that serves him well -- when he posts a link to something really nutty and gets busted on it, he backs off real fast.
What exactly are people complaining about?
I mean, Glenn seems to be saying something completely reasonable to me --- we've heard this story over and over again and it never pans out, why get excited now. I mean, I yawned and ignored it when I myself saw the headline.
I don't know, maybe teenagers haven't been through enough iterations of the "strong scientific evidence for something really cool" game to have caught onto it, but some of us are smarter than Charly Brown when Lucy presents the football. I mean --- Antarctic meteorites from Mars with microfossils in them; cold fusion; sonic fusion; laser fusion; the never-ending rounds of "substance x [salt | sugar | wine | butter ...] is [good | bad] for you in [small | large] doses as proved by the diets of [pygmies | the French | Japanese | seals]"
Science is not well understood or usefully followed through press reports.
Heck, if this is real, the story will still be there in three months when the confirming reports come in, and if not, well, that's a whole lot of psychic energy I didn't waste.

Hey Michael, was Constantine as bad as the critics say? I.e., not quite bad enough to wrap around the pole and become good?
I read AO Scott's review in the NY Times, and I think it was a terrible piece of reviewing. The quick answer is "not as bad as he was trying to convey."
I went in with rock-bottom expectations and ended up actually enjoying the film. It had some interesting camera work, and I actually liked Keanu Reeves's performance. I have a reservations, but overall, I think the movie did a fairly good job of adapting the story from the graphic novel. Of course, one of the problems with me saying that is that, as a reader of the graphic novels, I'm more clued into the world the movie takes place in.
If you feel like a little cryptic horror making use of christian myth, it's definately worth it.
Oh, and I hear that there's an extra scene after the credits if you go see it. I missed that.
And if you want me to expound upon how the movie differs from the comic...
I don't imagine the crew Glenn helped get reelected to the White House want to talk about life on Mars. I don't think the fundies would take that well. The media is lazy and spends most of its time rewriting press releases from politicians. That's why we haven't heard that much about this.
