Very cool. I used to bartend at one of TVZ's old regular haunts in Austin, and the other bartenders that had been there for a decade had great stories about the hell he used to raise, and their laughable attempts to keep him sober. They'd do an annual tribute concert and all the old-time Austin musicians and his son would sit around and play his songs and tell wild Townes stories. There's no shortage of those, it seems.
I don't have any great Townes anecdotes—I went to that bar, too, mostly to get free beer from Sue—but the documentary sounds good.
Another good doc now out on dvd is Heartworn Highways. It covers a lot of the "outlaw country" songwriters in Nashville and Austin including Townes, Guy Clark, Rodney Crowell, and a (very) young Steve Earle. Lots of killer performance footage.
There's a scene where Townes is giving the film crew a tour of his run-down house and showing off his 12 cent royalty check that's funny as hell. Unfortunately, this one isn't much of a comedy either upon reflection. Just makes the loss seem that much greater.
