Is it foolish of me to be surprised that she wasn't expecting that?
Gosh, the Vikings are getting pwned.
mmm, bacon. where was it? tommy and i had a really good breakfast at ann sather near the belmont el. they serve lingonberries!
Hey, when is/how was the date? Dish!
This was at Walker Brothers in Wilmette. Right up the road from you, Sexchoc.
Ann Sather is good. Lingonberries are thick on the ground in Andersonville. Try breakfast at Tre Kronor on Foster, too.
What date?
there is no date! it sounds like ogged is busy w/ family stuff. but tommy leaves tonight, so if ogged wants to hang out sans my clingy boyfriend before heading back to oggedville, the time is ripe.
I'm going to be at a conference in Chicago in November and then another in March. I've never been and would appreciate any recommendations about food, etc. The hotel for the first conference is near the Miracle something or other.
Actually, Catherine, I have a couple of hours free right now.
Jonathan, if you don't get recommendations in this thread, I'll do a proper post about it when I get back.
tommy said he understands if i must spend his last few hours in chicago hanging out with ogged, but i should probably hang out with the clingy boyfriend and take him to the airport around 4:30. another time!
Ah, too bad for me. I might actually be in DC before I come back to Chicago. Lucky lucky Tommy.
Clinginess is a virture, in my opinion.
the Miracle Mile -- that's downtown. You will be near tons of good restaurants. Just north of where you are is particularly laden. What are you looking for? For sushi, I would recommend this place called Starfish, which is close by. For steak, there are lots of great places, so just to pick one at random, I would say Gibsons. Kevin and mk are good, and not too pretentious. All these are a short cab ride from where you are, most likely.
I don't know what you're looking for with regard to nightlife, or if you are looking for nightlife. The closest bars to you are in the Rush/Division areas, but those are mostly 40-50 yr old Chet type places. Which may suit your needs; I don't know. Visit the art institute. It's on Michigan Ave., a few blocks south from where you'll be.
Is it faith in catherine, faith in ogged's decency, or faith in ogged's TiVo that makes tom feel so secure?
I'm mainly looking for suggestions for good food of any type, near by, and not exorbitantly priced.
some of those places are exorbitantly priced, though not the worst offenders around. There's a great Indian restuarant -- called India House, but it is more authentic than it sounds -- on Grand and State. I eat there lots. There's also a good Cuban place, I think on Clark and Hubbard, called Mambo Grill.
The tribune runs a website, www.metromix.com, which is a good resource.
The only thing I can say for sure is, if someone tries to get you to go to the bar in the Hard Rock Cafe, saying, "Don't be worried that it's the bar in the Hard Rock Cafe," do not listen to him.
I have a Gene Wolfe post up on my blog if you have any opinions.... I do not recommend any of the food options mentioned therein, either.
(I went to a Russian restaurant in the MM that was pretty good, but also pretty expensive.)
Was it Russian Tea Time? I should have had a real meal there when I was in Chicago.
There's a Harold's Chicken Shack on, I think, Washington and Clark. Around there, anyway. Not as good as the one in Hyde Park, but I'm a big fan of Harold's; I used to eat lunch there a lot when I was working a block away, to the detriment of my long-term health. It definitely meets the "not exorbitantly priced" criterion.
If you go there, get the hot sauce on top of the chicken; it absorbs nicely into the white bread.
And account time for the requisite nap afterwards.
Also, The Goat is just underneath the mag mile. It's the burger joint from the old saturday night live skits, and you can get an egg on top of four patties, if you so desire.
There was a Harold's in walking distance? Now I'm pissed that I let them take me to the Russian place.
I just remembered my that my other dinner around the MM was at a seafood place which is also too expensive. Then there was a tragic incident in which a bunch of vegans and a guy who wasn't eating bread for Passover somehow wound up at Jimmy John's. The APA doesn't leave enough time for lunch breaks sometimes.

Practicing the piano, and waiting for the next date....
That was some awful cutting and pasting.
Yes! Hot sauce is essential; the bbq sauce blows. Let this be your script for Harold's success: "quarter white, hot on.". Or you could get something else. But appending "hot on" is essential.
The bar at Petterino's, on Randolph and Dearborn IIRC, is supposed to be pretty good.
Is it faith in catherine, faith in ogged's decency, or faith in ogged's TiVo that makes tom feel so secure?
Since I wasn't around for the origin of the Tivo joke, I can't say exactly what the following means, but I have a feeling that it's metaphorically mortifying.
I bought Catherine a Tivo DVR with a year's service as a housewarming present, and had it shipped to her new apartment. I ordered the wireless adapter since I knew she wouldn't be getting a landline.
Yesterday I unpacked the box and started to configure the Tivo for her. But although Tivo can perform its day-to-day operations over a wireless link, it apparently requires a phone line for setup.
So I was not able to reset Catherine's Tivo. And despite my best efforts, in a few hours I'll be leaving her, alone in a strange city, on the lookout for someone who can.
What that metaphorically means is that you were unable to copulate with catherine.
luckily, ogged can't reset the Tivo either.
but there are others of us in the chicago area.
Gosh, the Vikings are getting pwned.
Oh, god. I've been known to take to my bed after games that went better than this. Tice needs to be canned ASAP. This season is unsalvageable.
I second the Harold's Chicken Shack recommendation. I would say to go for the regular barbeque over the so-called "spicy."
Okay, reading over w-lfs-n's further recommendations, I realize that when my date and I got, respectively, barbecue and spicy, we must have mixed them up somehow.
This season is unsalvageable.
The curse of Randy Moss starts now....
I wasn't entirely against the Randy Moss trade. We could have gotten more for him, but he was fairly toxic for team cohesion, even if he is the best receiver in the game.
What killed us was losing our offensive coordinator and replacing him with our offensive line coach (and then not backfilling the o-line coach position--he's doing double duty). On top of that, we lost our starting center and the replacement can't hack it. If Daunte had the time in the pocket he had last season, and if our line could open up some holes for runners, we'd at least be respectable fofensively.
Oh christ it's gonna be a long season.
The only, or at least more likely, mechanism via which b-wo's recommendations would change Kotsko's memories of what and his date had is if his date was in fact...w-lfs-n! This really changes my reading of Kotsko's reasons for cutting back on comments.
Randy Moss must be laughing his ass off. IMHO, he really was as good as he thought he was.
I don't date analytic philosophers.
What's all this about coming to DC?
You're about a month late for Summer Slam, Ogged. There's nothing else to do in this town.
But do you anal datalytic philosophers?
28: In that case, I should probably point out that I did manage to complete the setup as far as the step that requires the phone line, and that the settings entered to that point were saved.
So it was really more of a lackluster job of tivo resetting than an outright failure. But of course it's not really up to me to say.
Exbeforelast lives in DC, as does the friend you had lunch with, Matt Y. They both need visiting. I'm trying to arrange a NY/DC trip for next month. NY lodging is looking dicey, so no firm plans yet.
The Vikes miss Matt Birk entirely more than they miss Randy Moss. Culpepper could have two Randy Mosses and still wouldn't have enough time and protection to hot either one. Minnesota and Green Bay will be fighting it out for last place in the NFL's weakest division. How the mighty have fallen.
44:
Tom is saying he got to 3rd, but technical difficulties kept him from coming home.
Speaking of technical problems, the condom scene in 40YOV had me laughing so hard I could not breathe. It's the best comedy of the summer for me.
If you come to New York, I'd be interested in some kind of get together with the other local commenters. That's probably a biscuit conditional.
I'd say that, if you go to NYC, you should go here, but you don't drink.
Snopes reports that "ogged doesn't drink" is unsupported rumor. Evidence.
Well, Birk is replaceable, though he hasn't been yet. Moss isn't; there's no near-equivalent. (There are two new offensive linemen, not one, IIRC).
The TV people were pointing out that Moss forces massive adjustments in the defense, making things much easier for everyone else.
One theory is that the Vikings were cost-cutting so they didn't hire a new offensive coordinator.
In my opinion "team cohesion" is highly over-rated. Who do you want playing the game - a guy who can crack jokes and asks about your wife and children or the guy who can catch the end-zone pass with one toe in bounds?
"Not a team player" is the NFL equivalent to "improper lane usage." A label you can stick on someone whenever you want to give them a ticket.
wait... was Ogged a secret partcipant in a blogger conference? Is Ogged really Eszter Hargittai in drag?
32: Jeez, you take all the fun out of trash talk. If it makes you feel better, the Bengals actually seem like they might be good this year.
49: No, it isn't--I don't think you're really asserting the consequent unconditionally. If the consequent reads implicitly "a get together [with you and] the other commentators," then your interest can't be fulfilled unless the consequent is true. (The antecedent of a biscuit conditional is usually "If you want..." or something like that.)
30/31: I was hoping that we could all get together and upbraid Ben for making our innocent TiVo discussions into dirty nasty innuendo, but I went away and no one picked up on it. [Sob]
re 40: I consider myself more a catalytic philosopher.
I was thinking biscuit because I'd like to meet the other New York commenters independent of Ogged's presence. Might be pretty awkward, I've never met someone IRL whom I previously only spoke to online, but could be fun. I also confess to no longer being sure who is commenting from where, so I'm not even sure who I mean by New York commenters.
I think it's still not biscuit--for biscuit conditionals the consequent has to be not only true anyway but relevant to some purpose expressed in the antecedent.
If you don't feel like untangling the philosophy of language, WASHERDREYER WANTS TO GET TOGETHER WITH OTHER NY COMMENTERS!
Phuck. I just counterexampled myself.
I long to meet SB. But wonder if purdah/iron mask/confession booth grille protocol would have to be observed.
Who knows but what you already have.... (Moi aussi.)
I'd like to think we are all SB now. But no, none of us is SB.
Well, SB is SB. With the sole exception of SB.
Wherever two or three are gathered in unfogged's name, SB will be there among them.
I always thought there was a strong similarity between leaving a cup for Elijah and pouring out a 40 for your dead homies. Does anyone ever pour out a 40 for Elijah?
I saw Ogged drink once. Or at least some Iranian guy who went by a different name during that encounter and claimed to be the same person who posts here under the name "Ogged."
I'd love to meet you all, too, as long as you promise to check your disappointment when I don't ride in on a chariot-shaped cloud of butterflies.
Also: Are anyone else's thoughts turning again toward the function of mystery in social relationships?
I was expecting a thunder-ball shaped chariot of fire, a halo of hummingbirds, and fatted cherubim announcing your glory with megaphones.
you gotta be mysterious to get the womenfolk. It is taxing. That's my input.
I was all into the halo of hummingbirds until they started pooping.
Regarding womenfolk and mystery - the BEST way to get them is to
I expect flute and purple, myself.
One thing I have to say about ogged: He loves the pig.
I have a Spanish friend who helped me articulate my love of things porcine, from bacon to sausage to proscuitto to jamon serrano to lomos de cerdo ibericos: the pig is good.
I suggest we all say that several times a day. The pig is good.
Damn, I didn't even mention roast loin of pork on a bed of onions. Mmmmm.
Cool Site dude keep it up! will visit again and again Car Insurance
nice project with good design and pictures, best wishes...;-)
Hello all! Very nice site and very informativity!
