Likewise, in the current NYRoB, Christian Caryl notes that in fact the US was all but out of Saudi Arabia as of 2003 and thus had "essentially fulfilled bin Laden's primary demand." So where's the commensurate deescalation?
One of the best-named clerics ever, Cardinal Law.....
Qualifying your statement was wise, because Cardinal Sin of the Philippines ("either mortal not venial") was the best-named cleric ever.
Cardinal Biggles can only gnash his teeth in envy.
"neither mortal nor venial". Damn.
Two conflicting reactions: I'm not sure why you think he's "endorsing." (Unless you reject the legitimacy of what he says are Al Q's aims out of hand.)
But: he sure does sound like he admires Al Qaeda.
5: Well, it seems to me that there was an intermediate stop at "we can't win (and neither can they)" on the way to "Truce!"
Not that I endorse this--if we can't win, we might well still be able to contain without coming to some agreement. And as slol points out it's not clear that acceding to their demands will do any good. "whose struggle enjoys the rear-guard sympathy of large numbers of Muslims" isn't exactly a fixed conditions--fighting the war of ideas doesn't mean doing things that Al Q wants.
Also, what Ogged said about admiration.
A math pun that's actually funny. Seriously, wow. I doff my hat.
Someone reassure me that bza is in the wrong thread and I'm not missing a funny math pun.
Jesus Christ. The comments need footnotes. (Or hyperlinks, I suppose.)
This site obviously never will be up to the task of giving Yglesias the valid, adequate trashing that will tell him that he has finally arrived. Why do people think he's short, when he's not? That sounds pretty bad to me.
Someone reassure me that John is in the wrong thread and I'm not missing a worthwhile Yglesias critique.
"He is as a god among us" in the update gave me a hint that I might be in the wrong place.
Every time Yglesias gets mentioned anymore* John starts making noises about trashing him. He never seems to follow through, though.
*For MW
Emerson was all hyped to trash Yglesias when he thought that Matt, like John himself, is short. Now that he's learned that Yglesias tops 6', he's backing down while trying to save face.
I'm going to enlish Yglesias's support when I issue a fatwa against people who make fun of other people's spelling.
My take, not having read the whole article yet: Al Q bad, but their demands aren't as terrible as they are.
1. Teh powerline post was by the ugly owl, not Big Trunk.
2. Regardless of whether or not Mohamedou has a point, the powerline post was stupid.
3. An evident problem with Mohamedou: he acknowledges that Al Q is decentralized, yet advocates that conceding to Al Q's demands will bring a truce. It is not obvious how Osama would have the authority to stop a decentralized terrorist network.
Matt, I'm going to Austin this weekend. Want me to make a side-trip to Lubbock to break a foot off?
22. When the Revolution comes...
23. ?
23 redux: "Ya ast fer it" seemed more authentic than the way I had it first. Gotta keep it real.
Adjusting your speech pattern to "seem more authentic" is antithetical to keeping it real.
Git yerself a wife-beater and a skully. And a grill if you want it xtra real.
Oddly enough, the straw cowboy hats that I've been wearing to keep the sun off my face and neck do not help me blend in; in fact if anything the reverse.
Do your own thang. Though straw hats are more of a SouthEastern thang.
Get a bandana and a spit cup.
My Bible and apologia. Unfortunately one of my hats that started out light-colored has become slightly darker since the wind blew it into a fountain on campus.
Genuinely tall people are never thought to be short, but that's a common error about Y. And remember, on the internet no one knows you're a dog. He may be an elaborate Unfogged hoax.
Considering he posts on three blogs, none of them Unfogged, that would be quite a hoax.
And the guy who occassionally shows up on TV as "Matthew Yglesias"? Bob.
An elaborate Unfogged hoax behind a commenter's identity? Please, like that would ever happen.
See, the irony is that my real name is "Ogged" and "Matt Yglesias" is just a pseudonym. Then this "unfogged" blog showed up and ruined everything.
I think that Unfogged should be proud of the hoax of the millenium. This is better than graduating a dig from Cal Tech.
Yglesias is a jumped-up punk who got his job only because he went to Harvard and is the son of a cultural elite. He needs to be taught his place, and his job should go to someone deserving.
his job should go to someone deserving
They were originally going to give the job to Pepe the Hungry Orphan, but kicked him out of the running when they found that his resume was in the wrong font.
They were right to do so.
I never read Yglesias as short but I have read Ogged as bald(ing). True or false?
If ogged resembles Bert, and let's stipulate that he does, he has a groovy tuft thing working for him.
I don't think I want to know what it means to come off as balding in one's writing. But I am not, though Yglesias is.
To clarify, I picture "balding but wears it well", not "balding with pathetic combover".
(44 was a followup to 41, not a response to 43, which would imply something else altogether.)
If ogged resembles Bert, and let's stipulate that he does, he has a groovy tuft thing working for him.
How much does he pay it, and what are its job duties?
(Considering a carrer change.)
He should have one, but I'm not sure he's got the right hair for it. (Maniacal look, he has down.)
Shortly after that picture was taken, he catapulted a squirrel into the Chesapeake.

Shall we speculate? I have my theories.
C'mon -- Yglesias could never be Ogged. We'd know because of the spelling.
Is it really such a stretch to think that Brad is Banana Lofts' alter ego? Or vice versa?
Unf is Alameida's husband.
It's the steady production of arm-length posts that gives it away.
Does Alameida know about Unf's second wife?
