Not exactly what one would call an auspicious beginning.
Well, at least it means they'll be in England long enough for the hatchet I was having delivered to catch up with them. Can't set out across Central Asia without a hatchet.
But it is kind of frustrating -- the car just got out of the shop on Thursday.

True. But Audrey seems to be taking it in stride. Of course, when you have a month to get someplace, you can be more philosophical about losing a few days. On the other hand, instead of spending her birthday (tomorrow) in Prauge, she is spending it car-less in the far suburbs of London. No doubt they have beer there, too, and she will have a fine time nonetheless.
Hmm, I used to live in the far suburbs of London, and it's no Prague. Hope they get moving soon!
Any ideas for a day's cheap tourism in and around London? No way the car is going to be fixed before Monday.
loads of cheap tourism options, albeit not outside zones one and two. southbank (of the thames) always has free stuff going on (music, performances, etc) and is a wonderful place to drink and people watch. many museums throughout town are free, including the tate modern. and some of the parks are superb, especially st james's and hyde.
There's no such thing as cheap anything near London., which is the land of the 85% markup.
BTW, LB, I sent you an email about my ability to lend a hand.
I responded. They're okay for now, but I may email you sometime in the next day or two if they need a backyard to camp in.
"Audrey? There's a man here who says he has a 'hatchet' for you from your 'friend'. Should I let him in or call the police?"
With a zone card you get unlimited travel in and around London, even from the outer suburbs, for around $10 US a day so there shouldn't be any problem for them getting into the city centre. Once in the city centre it's not that hard to walk around most of it anyway.
Yeah, I'd second the South Bank recommendation. From the Tate Modern (opposite my old school!) along to the London Eye - great views :)
Ditto on the Southbank rec. I used to work around there, although that was almost 15 years ago. But I had the chance to wander around there again a couple of years ago, and there's loads to do and see there.
