I sent in my absentee ballot application yesterday. It may be my last chance to vote for Congressional representation for the near future so I'm damn well going to take advantage of it!
A bit off topic, but it looks like Democrats are playing a rougher sport this time around than perhaps the GOP expected. And then I remember that Dean is, after all, the party chair. And this makes me just a tiny bit hopeful.
Operation Harass Your Shiftless Liberal Pals may be a good opening project for the megazord.
MoveOn has a campaign going to call up left-leaning voters and get them to turn out. They've also asked people to organize phone parties -- perhaps the new Unfogged house would be interested in hosting one.
1- Will you still have a working address in your soon-to-be-former state so you could continue to vote absentee there? If so, why change to DC, where you can join the other 90% Democratic voters? I think this is legal as long as you 1) don't try to vote in 2 places, and 2) pretend in your mind that you may someday return to where you're voting, so your absence is just "temporary".
Wouldn't that involve maintaining a residence there? As in paying rent and stuff? Could get kind of expensive.
4 - Due to tax reasons too complicated to get into here: Nope.
In regards to 3, as I think I've mentioned, I did this, and it was relatively painless. All it takes is a cell phone, an internet connection, and a little courage at first.
There may also be local GOTV things going on that you can be a part of. But harassing one's own friends is definitely the place to start.
But Becks, your current Congress critter is a bare step up from none. Your official place is out in the wilds of Fairfax, right. So what is it, Wolf or Davis? Davis did a chickenshit no vote on the Omnibus Torture & Tyranny Act. I can't boast better though. I get to vote for that sleaze Moran. But it is sleaze spelled with a D!
Out here in Vietnam, not clear how many votes are really there to be harvested. Could try going hootch to hootch I guess.
So I put myself on an e-mail list of people willing to volunteer some time to do various things for Menendez for Senate, and the first thing the list asked me to do is go to a rally at 9:30 tomorrow morning outside of CBS (57th St. between 10th and 11th). I should probably do this, yes? Should I try to find out something about Menendez other than that's he a Democrat in a close race and has a number of scandals surrounding him?
One of the primary (IMO) things to know about Menendez is that he was one of 6 Democrats in the Senate to back elimination of habeas protections for "enemy combatants". A stand that (again IMO) cannot be explained by saying he is in a close race for reelection -- NJ is a strongly Democratic state where rejection of costitutional protections is not going to sway a big bloc in his favor. Just sayin'.
That's wholly despicable and idiotic, so right after he votes for majority leader Reid I'd be happy to denounce him as an evil incompetent and encourage other Democrats to do the same
Right. Go to the rally, and then plot his downfall in the 2012 primary.
