Maybe he'll tell you once the power's back on.

That would be acceptable.

NYT:

KSSK Radio, a Clear Channel station that one of the few broadcasters that was operating immediately after the earthquake, reported that power was out all over the island of Oahu. The airport was closed and cellphone service is spotty, the station said.

As an aside, observe Clear Channel's pact with Satan confirmed.

Holy shit!

My parents are in Hawaii, and I find out about the earthquake from Unfogged.

(I called them before commenting, and they're fine.)

Same here. Mine are well-used to earthquakes, and they didn't even notice it.

The title should be "She shook me all night long."

Yes, we were electronics-free yesterday. Power went out shortly after the quake, around 7:20 am, and didn't come back in our area until about 11:20 pm. Some areas were later yet.

I think we just learned that we are a long way from ready for a hurricane on Oahu. There was basically no damage here. Our house shook pretty sharply, but it didn't even tip any but the most precariously perched stuff off of shelves. But it's not good when a small quake (on Oahu; it was significant on the Big Island) drops the whole power grid, and what I've seen so far suggests that we didn't do much of a job of keeping the tourists fed and transportation functioning. My brother's family was on their way home from Boston yesterday, but luckily where they ended up stranded was in Portland where my sister lives, so no great harm done. But we've got some work to do on emergency preparedness, which is kind of depressing because we've been told for the last five years that good things were happening about emergency preparedness.

Wow. Well, I'm glad it wasn't worse. And maybe this will be the prod to get people ready for something bigger. And if there is a really big quake, I'll bet you can just ride the tsunami all the way to the mainland.

So glad you're OK, Dave!

Thanks for the good wishes, but it was really not a big deal on Oahu at all aside from the power outage. The Big Island apparently has a lot of road damage, broken glass, etc., and probably we'll here more about structural damage over the next couple of days. Here, it's just the unpreparedness that's kind of scary. Most of us who live here have grills and camp stoves and tarps and such, but there are an awful lot of tourists and highrise dwellers who aren't as well off, and we will get hit by a hurricane sooner or later. Judging from yesterday, we aren't even close to ready.

And tsunami, by the way, was what I spent yesterday morning worrying about. Not from the initial quake, but when I heard that the quake was on the Big Island I assumed it was somewhere around Kilauea. My understanding is that there's a biggish chunk of the side of the mountain that's not as well anchored as one likes truly mammoth chunks of rock to be, so I was a bit worried that the quake would be followed by a truly enormous landslide that would generate an enormous tsunami. But that was apparently never a danger. The quake was way on the other side of the island, and I saw something this morning from the volcano observatory indicating that they don't see any change on their side.

Truth be told, when the power finally came back on my reaction was basically "shit, so much for the quiet." It was a pretty pleasant day once we settled in with our books.

But then again, you live in Hawaii, so I'm guessing most of your days are pretty decently pleasant. Glad you're doing ok, though.
