Oh my. Evangelicals must love gay people.
I don't know anything about the Nuremberg Rallies, but I know lots of Americans think of it as a rock concert.
whu?
2 was me.
It seems like you could probably get some screen grabs from this that make Haggard look even more like a tooth-grinding tweaker.
Well-groomed smiley-face people are all alike.
Not a meth-user, just meth-curious and meth-friendly. Gotta keep these all straight.
"Straight". Funny.
Note how happy those boys in the front row were...
No one is talking about the real issue here:
What's the deal with Haggard's lips? I've never seen anyone talk like that, with lips splayed out (as if to... nevermind) but teeth together. It's like that annoying-stupid-woman character from MadTV - the one whose tagline (such as it was) was "Yuh - OK."
But, you see, she was a sketch-show character, not pastor of 14,000 screamin' Jesus-lovers. Do evangelicals have a thing for following weird-looking people (cough-Bakkers-cough)?
cough-Bakkers-cough
This was a really interesting movie. I came away liking Tammy Faye despite myself.
8: Agree with you there. The only person who looks more "in-the-closet" than Dr. Dobson is Ralph Reed.
Ditto 8 on that lip thing. WTF? Bet he sucks a mean dick though.
I dig how people jump around at those rallys. Always makes me laugh.
One year, Dr. Dobson received an honorary doctorate from Olivet (my alma mater, also his son's alma mater), and he spent most of this speech making misogynistic jokes about his wife.
Thankfully, that wasn't the year I graduated, but I had to be there to play in the band. (I don't remember who was honored my year -- some fucking dumbass, doubtless, but few reach the level of Dobson.)
11: His alma mater is Oral Roberts. Seriously.
Holy moly, from the Oral Roberts history department page.
Civilization is founded on history, for a civilized human being is one who holds values that are irrelevant without perspective. Oral Roberts University is charismatic, and its history program is based on both human and spiritual truth. History provides both record and interpretation without which perspective is impossible. Perspective provides insight into why present instituions and society are what they are. Analysis of the whys of the past suggests actions that may be expected to produce positive changes in contemporary institutions and society.
Who wrote that, someone who's twelve?
The chair of the theology department is ABD.
Also, the Borat movie is sort of interesting.
Studying theology in an academic environment warps your mind.
Here's the important question: under what circumstances would you enlist in the U. S. military (or willingly be drafted?)
Studying philosophy in an academic environment fucks you up for life.
But I meant that in the best possible way.
8- I'm reminded of the middle school joke about dick sucker's cramp. (Get it?)
From the most recent War Nerd: "We all know local politics belongs to real estate developers at civic level and to the corporations at Federal level. Which is fine with me, and with most Americans, but why call it democracy?"
Is this wrong?
27: Well, it's probably an exaggeration to say "We all know." So: probably.
14 -- how can a dude be one's alma mater?
You're saying it should be his almus pater? Maybe Roberts is actually a girl.
With a name like "Oral" it's hard to tell.
Crossed my mind about Haggard tonight that few of us believe in evil. Hypocrisy doesn't quite describe the gay homophobe. Haggard could have been the sincere Christian and the closet gay. Or just maybe the sincere Christian who knew he was going to hell and didn't care.
His brother Anal doesn't get the attention he deserves.
15- a good childhood friend of mine went to ORU. I don't think it's a stretch to say he did not recieve a quality education.
I visisted the campus a few times. Weird. Some of the rules don't even make sense, like the formal (shirt/tie) dress code for all classes. Why?
The part I like most about 15 is the "ORU is charismatic." I mean, I think I know what that means, but for a moment I was all, "Mr. Roberts rolled an 18 for charisma, that can't be right."
35 -- ORU is hardly the only educational institution in the world or in the US with a dress code -- it's not even limited to charismatic institutions (though probably more common in that subset). What perplexes you about this one?
Sorry, yes, that wasn't clear at all. What doens't make sense is that the class dress code is tied to spiritualility in some weird way. You aren't required to dress up for class in order to look nice or be respectful, you are required to dress up for class because God requires it.
Why aren't more people making fun of this line:
"for a civilized human being is one who holds values that are irrelevant without perspective"
I mean, sure, I blipped over it at first, too, thinking, "oh yes, standard jab against relativism." But wait: they just said that their values are *irrelevant.* In fact, no matter what perspective you have, their values are irrelevant!
In all fairness to the ABD chair, it's possible that there just weren't doctoral programs in "Christian education" when she began her career. It seems to be a relatively new field, and I don't even know what it's supposed to be -- my school used to have someone who taught that, but hasn't for a while. Plus the "chair" is generally an administrative position that actual research-oriented people (assuming such exist at ORU) would shun. Maybe they just think of her as their secretary at a certain level.
What doens't make sense is that the class dress code is tied to spiritualility in some weird way. You aren't required to dress up for class in order to look nice or be respectful, you are required to dress up for class because God requires it.
They just say that. Really it's about how they hate dirty hippies. BYU is the same way. Guys hair can't be long enough to touch their collar, no beards, girls can't have more than one earring in each ear, etc. None of that shit is required by the religion otherwise, it's just BYU's way of making everyone look like nice little wholesome suburbanites.
