So what you're saying is that your expectations weren't meant?
Unfogged: One stop shopping for your borat-cult fetish.
I think what Ogged is saying is that he's prejudiced against frat boys.
The genius of the "Jew down the well" scene is that it makes us wonder what we would do in that situation, and whether we, and the people in the scene, are more anti-semitic, or tolerant of hate, than we'd like to believe. There's also a second-order reflection about how we, who are not cowboy bar patrons, react to the people in the bar, and whether we're quick to think the worst of them, when we might well act similarly in analogous situations. Good stuff, and plenty funny too.
Not buying it. Most of us can recall a time when we laughed at a joke we wish we hadn't laughed at, just to fit in, or pulled a moue and sulked rather than say anything. We might wonder how much our behavior has changed and how much our circumstances have changed, and which is controlling, I suppose. But that's about it.
That would be you making the second-order reflection, which means Ogged is right.
One interesting thing about SBC's shtick is that as he becomes more prominent it becomes harder for him to find targets. I wonder how the movie will affect that.
I wonder how the movie will affect that.
I'm pretty sure he can't do much in Britain anymore, and this is a sign of how it was becoming difficult for him here in the States, even when they were shooting the movie.
Let's face it, the Lur and the Kazakhs are like brothers. "My sheep is your sheep", they say to each other. I'm surprised that Ogged isn't touchier than he is about this.
Here's the thing: it's pretty normal to find something funny that's cruel or some X that you don't want to endorse, but I think it's also fairly common for people to see what they need to see behind a joke (or practice or whatever) to justify their enjoyment of it. ogged's a pretty bright guy, and he's best situated to describe his own reactions, but--having looked at the "Well" clip--I just don't see the subtlety.
I just saw a scene in a supermarket from the "Jew down the well" link. Do you mean this?
I saw it today. I thought pretty much the same, though I was a little more generous. I thought he didn't push far enough with most of the encounters.
The only funny thing I've seen of Borat was his Daily Show interview where he claimed that the president of Kazakhstan could suspend a car battery from his testicle-satchel for eight seconds.
The best thing about it is that it's believable.
It's a lot easier than you would think.
I actually thought that Emerson had posted 13, and thought, well of course you didn't think he pushed it far enough.
I saw the movie today and thought it was pretty hilarious. The frat boy scene was not really funny at all though, partly because I thought it was scripted, and partly because they all made me sick. The parts where he asks the gun store owner what's the best weapon for defending oneself against a Jew, and the man doesn't miss a beat before whipping out a gold 9 mm -- that's funny because there are millions of people like that man, which is not funny. Similarly, when Borat tells the man at the rodeo that they string up gays in his country, and the man replies "we're trying to get that done here too".
Did anyone see Jesus is Magic? I remember all the commentary on that movie was, as a said in 10, seeing what one wanted to see to not feel bad for laughing at it. It was supposed to be ironic, or satirical, or what-have-you...but all it really was was a series of really, really racist jokes.
I don't see the Borat movie that way at all though.
This person completely steals sarah silverman's act. She is still somewhat funny.
Who steals Sarah Silverman's act, steals trash.
Sarah Silverman is hysterically funny. Lisa Lampanelli is the one that just tells racist jokes.
20 gets it exactly right, you bigots.
