CNN calls NJ Senate race for incumbent Dem. Menendez.
I just heard in the next room that Menendez won in NJ. Yay! The electronic, paper-trail-less minions of Sequoia were not able to fuck us over, here anyway. Any other news?
Damn. I was going to leave a starter comment.
anyone else seeing VA returns? Both CNN and TPM are reporting over 50%, but CNN sez Allen's ahead and TPM sez Webb.
Wait, so what we doing on the other thread then? Damn, this is like the time I went to that dance, only it wasn't a dance, it was a rodeo, and my date's name was "Kelly," only she wasn't a girl...
CNN has Allen ahead by 10,000 votes, with about 50% counted. Schumer just said that the parts of the state yet to be counted lean Dem. Who knows. How the fuck is that race even close?
TPM and CNN both now show Allen up
grrrrrr
WILL CNN PLEASE SHUT UP BILL BENNETT AND JC WATTS. I may channel surf
Schumer just said that the parts of the state yet to be counted lean Dem
Looks like the heavily Democratic People's Republic of Charlottesville, for example, has not yet been counted.
Sherrod Brown wins, Dem Senate pickup in Ohio. (CNN)
CNN seems to be calling them awfully fast, presumably based on exit polls. Their site shows Kean ahead in the actual count (but with a miniscule number of precincts reporting).
The polls say that Menendez is in the lead, but the actual numbers all have Kean ahead. What gives?
CNN seems to be calling them awfully fast
They are. Let's hope they know what they're doing.
Teeheeheehee! Santorum! Teeheeheehee!
Not election-related, but to bide your time until the next announced result: Jewface!
The polls say that Menendez is in the lead, but the actual numbers all have Kean ahead. What gives?
Rigging.
I smell a recount coming in KY-03.
And CNN just called Brown for Ohio, with "0% of precincts reporting." I puke when stressed out, people!
19: K-Lo said it's unanimous, at The Corner.
Source?
My wife was watching the news on TV and yelled it to me in the next room.
Why was Matthews blowing Scarborough on MSNBC just now?
We should watch different channels. I'm on CNN. Does anyone have Fox and MSNBC?
25 -- I think this is also a good demonstration that the old technology is superior.
Rah was watching MSNBC when I was home for dinner, but I'm sure he's channel flipping and I'm NOT sure he's watching Unfogged. So, uh, there's that?
I just went in to the TV room and looking at MSNBC it had a democrat winning in New Mexico -- I did not catch his name though.
Anderson Cooper: "What did Rick Santorum do wrong?"
Who wants this one?
MSNBC says RI is too early to call.
Geez, my DirecTV is on the fritz for the first time ever.
The local NBC affiliate just called the RI Senate race for Whitehouse.
NPR calls Casey for PA, Hutchison for TX (duh) and Spitzer for NY Gov.
MSNBC just called Granholm to win in Michigan and Spitzer in NY along with Richardson in NM and Napolitano in AZ for governors
35 -- and also the Dem incumbent governor.
38, 40: No surprise there on either count. Nothing's been counted, though; the polls just closed.
And MSNBC has called Nelson in FL (big surprise).
NPR and NYT call MA Gov. for Patrick; NPR calls OH Gov. for Strickland, so plus two.
Re 41, Fox being the only channel avialable on TVUPlayer.
The hell? I've been reloading the NYT results on Virginia for a while, watching them tick up from 50% to 60% reporting, always with Webb a bit behind. And cnn.com says "In Virginia, Webb held a 1-point lead over Allen with 55 percent of precincts reporting."
Allen's lead just narrowed to about 9000 on cnn.com.
Bob Bennett says that there will be a movement to draft Santorum for president in 08.
I would assume this all must be coming from exit polls, not results. Though I am loathe to quote them as an agreeing source, the Santorum campaign's official line so far says likewise.
47-8: Okay, I just stopped trusting cnn.com...
"Foley" is still running even in FL!?!?!!?
Tradesports has a Dem House as nearly a sure thing (5), and a Dem Senate at 65, down from around 80 early today.
Bob Bennett says that there will be a movement to draft Santorum for president in 08.
That would be awesome.
MSNBC calls Lieberman w/ 49-40-10 for the Repub
MSNBC called CT for fucking Lieberman.
"Foley" is still running even in FL!?!?!!?
He dropped out too late to have his name removed from the ballot.
49: Let 'em. That would be an ugly primary season I'd very much enjoy watching.
MSNBC called CT for fucking Lieberman.
Fuck. As expected, but fuckity fuck.
I'm about to check off the interwebs for the night, but I'm starting to feel very optimistic. And I don't think that's just the whiskey talking. Hopefully when I wake up tomorrow morning Democrats will have assumed control of both chambers, the House will have impeached Bush, the Senate will have voted for his removal, and when I turn on my t.v. I'll get to see live coverage of Al Gore being sworn into office. Oh, what a beautiful day it's going to be!
Didn't they just have like 10,000 votes on CNN? Now they're projecting him? Am I having decimal point issues?
Foley is still on the ballot. A vote for him *may* count for his replacement (I've seen most stories say "will" but others say there's some legal dispute)
Olberman slipped and called him "Lieberthal".
"Al Gore" constitutionally s/b "Dick Cheney". But one can dream.
Another catcher past his prime trying to hang on...
I suspect that Lieberthal causes birth defects.
There are precisely zero (0) broadcast TV stations in the largest market in New Mexico currently reporting election results. I love the free market.
Hey did anybody know that Daniel Ortega just won an election in Nicaragua?
Fucking Joe Scarborough is distancing himself from the GOP.
Steele winning in Maryland.
CBS calls MD for Cardin, according to commenters at Kos.
MSNBC calls Cardin in MD, defeating Oreo boy
And yes, the votes for Foley go to his replacement, but still. . .
Right now, Webb is ahead by . . . 10 votes.
I have mixed feelings about Ortega, but it is so nice to see leftists sweeping national elections in Latin America. After decades of the US using the military to force right wing rule on them, the people are simply choosing the left, and Washington is in no position to complain.
Has Leiberman promised to caucus with the democrats if elected?
Go Webb go! I wish George Allen would sit on an incapacitating tack.
79 -- he did, but who knows what he'll do?
What's up with these NYT maps? Are they coloring them in by hand, or just waiting for every last vote?
Holy shit, CNN calls Maryland Senate race for Dem. Cardin.
CNN projects dems hold MD. Is that a surprise? I know there were folks who wanted to make this a little suspenseful.
For sanity, I suggest ignoring the Virginia race for a while.
79: Yes, and Reid has stated that if Lieberman wins he'll keep his seniority, etc.
NPR calls for governors' races: Granholm (D-MI) and Napolitano (D-AZ).
Yowza, CNN calls Kentucky House race for Dem. Yarmuth. Lots of people saying this one was a "bellweather."
Ann Northrup went down in KY, which is a good win for our side
NPR and CNN call Yarmouth (D) for KY-03.
MSNBC: Yarmuth in KY and Ellsworth in IN for the house.
The meme i'm hearing is that the new democrats are going to be populist/protectionist/nationalist
Fox called CT for Lieberman over the commercial break. Fox is saying they won't be using exit numbers tonight, citing a 6.8% bias toward the dems.
If the Dems pick up six in the Senate and both sides start furiously kissing Lieberman's ass, I'm going to fucking puke. Puke, I tell you.
From the doughy pantload, at the Corner: Mort Kondracke pretty clearly thinks the Dems will take the Senate, but he won't say it outright. It doesn't mean anything, but it makes me hopeful.
Ken Mehlmen (RNC chairman) just said (threatened) that he thought some of the races might "go into overtime."
And CNN just called RI Senate race for Dem Whitehouse. A big pickup, I think.
Democrats have now held all their senate seats that were in potentially play (NJ, MN, MI, MD, FL)
that (RI) was a cnn call obviously from exit polls. i hope it holds
Local RI TV calls Whitehouse over Chafee.
I'm just transcribing Kos to here.
So Dems need 3 out of 4 from TN, VA, MT, MO to take the Senate. Honestly, I don't see it happening.
OK, second beer. First was Cooper's Dark, this is Schlafly (st. Louis) Winter ESB.
MSNBC calls O'Malley for MD gov
97: This is to cover up the fact that the election tallies themselves are slanted 6.8% above the actual voting to Republicans.
SP is the old technology.
OTOH, The Corner's feeling more confident about, per #88, the Race That Should Be Ignored.
Lots of people saying this one was a "bellweather."
Other people more correctly called it a "bellwether."
101: Weeeeeeehawken!
Chocola goes down!
I think it's a long shot, ogged. But I think MT and MO may go the way we want.
CNN just projected Donnelley in Indiana, another Dem pickup.
108 was unclearly worded. I'm just casting aspersions about election fruad.
Also, I'm glad that many people are commenting Becks style tonight. Is Becks herself here to comment Becks style?
MSNBC calls for Whitehouse in RI, Chaffee called "an innocent" "going down in this war" by Matthews. WTF?
108: Not sure how serious you're being, but what they said is that the exit polls are skewed toward Democrats 6.8% above the tabulated results.
They didn't say whether that was across all elections or just senate/house races.
Hey is anyone from the NYC drinking meetup reading? Want to add any observations to the thread?
Other people more correctly called it a "bellwether."
Good thing I put it in quotes.
to 106, me neither. I think we fall one short. Steele and Ford both lose by surprisingly large margins, which is, uhm, disturbing.
Does one officially become Becks-style at a certain blood alcohol level, or is it a subjective thing?
Fox calls Michigan and Delaware Senate seats for us.
Actually, Scott Eric, that was pretty dern funny. Because it's true!
We don't own wineglasses; instead, when we drink wine we do it out of these teeny tiny little Turkish tea glasses. This makes it delightfully easy to lose track of how much one has drunk, greasing the path to Becks-styling.
Michele Malkin is covering the blogosphere for Fox.
many people are commenting Becks style
I am!
Michele Malkin is covering the blogosphere for Fox.
And a big hello to Michelle from Unfogged!
Bob Bennett says that there will be a movement to draft Santorum for president in 08.
Oh please let this happen. please!
Saiselgy is reading my mind.
http://www.matthewyglesias.com/archives/2006/11/fuck_you_gg_parker/
Fuck, virginia is kicking my ass. So close=/
I'm three hours behind you Easterners, so I'm not there yet. I may go Apo-style. Or is that Clown-style?
Who you callin' an Easterner, McQ? Them's fightin' words.
The blogosphere is failing me. Turning on TV news...MSNBC...literally for the first time in years.
Boyda is leading Ryun in KS 2. This would be an amazing turnaround.
Rock ChalkJayhawk!
GOD FUCK YOU CHRIS MATTHEWS> ARG i want to brak things. a
Where are you, slo? If you're in my time zone, I've got some catching up to do.
What, exactly, did Matthews do this time?
You know, for the first time in years, I wish I had fucking cable.
146 -- The kids call that Cinemax, I hear.
What, exactly, did Matthews do this time?
Didn't mean to post that twice. I'm not that curious.
143:Yup Fuck Matthews. 1st time TV in years, and that bullshit about Dems & the war is the first thing I see.
(close captioned, of course. I have my limits)
148:Didn't catch it all, but something about the Dems Senators are scum for not having an exact plan for Iraq.
This'll get pwnd
CNN is going to the roomful of bloggers, after this commercial break, in case anyone wants to see...
This really is the first time I've watched TV news in months, and Jesus Pete but it really is dreadful. The worst thing? CNN's endless cutting back to the "blogger party" somewhere in DC, that's nothing but a roomful of people staring at laptops.
Hey NYC drinkers -- is Drymala unzipping yet?
Foley might win?
I have to admit, this would be awesome.
It's Florida, guys. Anything is possible.
It is funny that the only thing the Republicans have to gloat about so far is Joe Lieberman winning.
Foley votes go to his stand-in. Still one hopes people washed their hands after pulling that lever (as it were) . . .
I like watching the RedState blogger on CNN being reduced to gloating over the fact that Lieberman beat Lamont.
Keep an eye on Carol Shea-Porter in NH. She's not supposed to win but it looks like she might.. the first unexpected pickup of the night?
Arizona passes initiative making English the official language of the state.
Matthews went on and on about how Democrats don't have a position on Iraq, and how they all have different positions, and how every politician should have to say how they'd fix it up, party of ideas, etc.
Maf54: hope i win tonite
Xxxxxx: i told my friends 2 vote 4 u lol
Maf54: you better
Xxxxxx: yeah i told them i would beat them up
Maf54: great visual
Arizona passes initiative making English the official language of the state.
Didn't they do this years ago? Maybe it didn't pass that time.
167 -- this will heighten tension between them and New Mexico.
MSNBC calls Murphy in CT, Scarborough says "Nancy Johnson going down tonight."
Seriously, the only surprising thing about the Arizona English-only law is that they didn't already have one.
After listening to Jeff Greenfield and Wolf Blitzer for a few hours now, I will never again complain about Joe Theismann as a football announcer.
JEEZ lookit this in VA:
VA-SEN Webb (D): 49.37% Allen (R): 49.43% n/a n/a 86.66% 09:49 pm EST
its from TPMCafe
Santorum conceding on MSNBC. The rest of the family is there, where's the fetus?
Matthews on Santorum: "A lot of liberals generally don't like him." What reporting!
Though Santorum was gracious enough. Clearly plans to run for something else.
Santorum is being pretty affable on this speech.
Aren't they saying that it's close enough that the Green Party candidate has made a difference in VA?
I've had a couple of glasses of sangria.
looks on TPM like the dems are leading in 4 of 5 reporting. Sad to report that Schmidt is the one Rep leading (one race has no returns) but 4 of 5 is good
Santorum conceding on MSNBC. The rest of the family is there, where's the fetus?
Tell me he's crying.
Please tell me he's crying.
And don't ask where my other hand is.
Santorum's kids are weeping.
Ew.
180 -- my evening is made. And beer 3 is Old Speckled Hen.
Jesus fucking christ, control of the senate is going to be decided by the fucking moron green voters. But both parties are the same, right guys?
sorry about 105-- omitted phrase "in Ohio"
Aren't they saying that it's close enough that the Green Party candidate has made a difference in VA?
Not AOTW.
Allen's going to pull it out in VA.
NPR calls Perry (R) for TX gov, Crist (R) for FL gov, Hatch for UT sen.
194 -- CNN said there was an automatic recount if the margin were less than 0.5%.
Our Greenish trolls have made me wonder whether Greens are natural Dems at all. Would we really get those votes if a Green didn't run, or would they stay home?
Saiselgy is reading my mind.
Yeah, I hear you. And say what you will about Saiselgy, but that young man is basically solid.
Oh, of course I support the right of any eligible voter to cast his or her ballot any way that he or she pleases. But then, I also reserve the right to declare that anyone who spoils his or her the ballot by turning the right and responsibility to vote into a "dream the impossible dream" moment is just a complete feckin' idjiot.
Too strident? I'm not even going to apologize.
166: KY-3 is also an upset.
173, 194: ATM.
VA sen analysis swiped from Yglesias commenter:
The missing counts though are heavily in Petersburg and Richmond, which shold be safely for Webb and Prince William and Loudon counties, where the currently reported totals are for Webb. Allen's best hope among the uncounted is in Tidewater where Va Beach and Chesapeake are still only partially in, but he's only narrowly ahead in the current counts there.
Too strident? I'm not even going to apologize.
Fuck up once, shame on Ralph. Fuck up twice...
Bill Crystal on Fox is saying the final exit polls had Webb winning "comfortably".
Pat Buchanan just told Matthews he didn't get a sense of a blowout.
CNN has Webb down over 20,000 votes with 88% reporting.
Billy Crystal? Man, they'll let anyone do election commentary.
Bill Crystal
I hope you mean Bill Kristol.
I'm entirely pleased that the one candidate I have ever voted unreservedly FOR, Steve Cohen, will definitely be representing me in the House. (Harold Ford's old seat.)
Harold Ford's little brother Jake, who ran as an independent, did not ride Harold's coattails.
Would we really get those votes if a Green didn't run, or would they stay home?
My instinct is that people who vote are going to get to the polls most of the time. I don't think many are "usually I'm too lazy to vote, but damnit there's a Green on there this time." I can't imagine many would be pulling the lever for Repubs.
203 -- Now we're listening to political analysis from Billy Crystal?
206: Wait, I'm not Becks-style, am I? There is a non-comic Bill Crystal who does commentary for Fox News, right?
CNN exit poll has 56% of Virginians saying Allen respects minorities. Uh...
Honestly, I doubt it. Most of the people I know personally who vote Green just don't vote for either of the major parties ever. Getting mad at them won't change it, and there isn't really any argument you present that will way them from that strategy.
FWIW, via TAPPED commentary, not all Greens are created equal. "Fiscally Conservative, Socially Responsible" they say. Not sure these are our boys getting peeled off...
NPR also says Nancy Johnson is "going down." Is she really hot or something?
http://sbe.virginiainteractive.org/index.htm
Virginia is not looking good.
I agree with 209. There's probably a high percentage of regular voters and potential Dems in there.
CNN exit poll has 56% of Virginians saying Allen respects minorities. Uh...
He respects them enough to get very specific with his slurs.
Oh God. Per Wikipedia, the Independent Green Party of Virginia claimed a bunch of other third-party candidates who made it onto the ballot were affiliated with them. Voting for GG Allin would have been less clownish.
I really wish GG Allin held public office (at some point).
CNN projects Repub Davis in KY holds his seat.
I mean, santorum was probably part of his act...
Is she really hot or something?
Um, no.
Voting for GG Allin would have been less clownish
You have to admit though, GG Allin's speeches on the Senate floor would have sent C-Span's ratings through the roof.
I'm pessimistic about the Senate. Hang in there, Justice Stevens.
Early nominee for line of the night goes to a Sully emailer: "Man, Santorum looks like he really needs some meth to throw away."
Like that time he threw shit at Trent Lott and headbutted Maria Cantwell? That was magic.
232: I initially misread that as "meatpwnage".
Dem Hodes picks up a House seat in CT. (CNN)
236: That's part of Congressman GG Allin's act.
237: In NH.
The Stamford paper is calling Farrell over Shays.
NPR calls 3 formerly GOP seats in Indiana for the Dems. Baron Hill is one and I keep missing the other two names.
Farrell defeats Shays for a Dem pickup.
And don't ask where my other hand is.
Sweet!
WOOWOOO Take THAT, Santorum. I felt bad when I saw his son weeping, but only for an instant. This is a man-on-dog night, I can feel it.
240: Donnelly over Chris "Count" Chocola and Brad Ellsworth over John Hostettler in a Deadwood battle royale. Ellsworth's online bio was both sweet and depressing, but I guess you don't have to be very good with the English language to be an effective cop.
Ooh, be sure to turn to MSNBC so you don't miss McCain! He's explaining how the chaos will spread not just through Iraq but through the region, and we will be faced with grave consequences. And dissing Rahm Immanuel.
The best long-term news is here, because that's where your presidential candidates come from.
Good god, Chris Matthews is such a tool.
246: James Carville looks like Voldemort.
Sad, but true.
243: Well, I saw a talk at a conference last weekend about cops' adeptness with face-preserving talk during arrests. On the other hand, all of the data was from COPS, so the results were a little bit skewed.
The Corner says Steele isn't conceding and thinks the network projections rely too much on exit polls which skew Dem.
South Dakota appears unlikely to pass its abortion ban. But will Nevada legalize marijuana?
Carville looks like Becks-style Yoda
The Corner says Steele isn't conceding and thinks the network projections rely too much on exit polls which skew Dem.
He's probably right, actually, and I remain leery of trusting CNN.
256 - he is talking about the anti-Rumsfeld editorials, the ones which -gg-d scorns.
Hillary's on MSNBC, Bill standing behind.
I'll take this thread all the way to 354 by myself if I have to!
69, dudes.
I just moved to DC a month ago. I just received my "taxation without representation" license plates! Awesome.
ew hillary.
Stefanopolis just said all the nova precincts are in and webb is down 30k
So, I'll ask. Since the FEEB has opened an investigation in Va., how does that affect things? It's going to be close enough for an automatic recount...(and in January, SCOTUS releases Allen v. Webb and we all throw up in our mouthes)
Oh good, now he has free time to go find the WMDs.
How I have managed to make it to this point in the night without drinking, I don't know.
REiD: "If we're gonna make an progress in the country, its going to be on a bipartisan basis"
Stefanopolis just said all the nova precincts are in and webb is down 30k
There are still outstanding precincts in Richmond, Petersburg and Norfolk, though.
268 I would have left work an hour ago, but Can't. Stop. Refreshing...
If Keith Richards were an AD&D character, would his constitution be 18, or would something like 19 be required?
Webb has closed to 12000 down with 6% remaining.
Good lord, Santorum is getting creamed.
274- ATM. But that was an intentional setup, wasn't it?
The VA race/recount could get really ugly.
I mean, yeah, they do, but demigod is the territory--so far.
Ken Mehlman is talking about the ownership society.
If Keith Richards were an AD&D character, would his constitution be 18, or would something like 19 be required?
I suspect you're going to have to go at least version 3.0 and bring in the Epic Levels handbook to deal with him. I'm betting he'd have laid out the plat for one of the books that grants a permanent +4, if nothing else.
278: What do you mean? That the courts will throw it to Allen? Or just disharmony?
272 - Does some network have Keith Richards doing election commentary?
Most up to date VA counts I've found are here (via Yglesias)
272 -- this is the elections thread. You want the Rolling Stones thread.
Heath Shuler was running for Congress? Well, he's a Dem and he won, anyway.
Woo hoo! Dems pick up an NC mountain seat!
I'm still doing the happy Santorum dance.
I've got to say, for sitting there on his laptop on national TV, atrios isn't producing very much.
278 - well Allen is the wannabe mini-W. Substitute "Racism" for "alcohol" and "spitting on your wife" for "blow."
Though it will be a Trucker Hat Riot, rather than Brooks Brothers.
I grew up in NC 11. FUCK YEAH NC 11 I am going to get SO DRUNK when I go home.
FUcking third pary ASSHOLES need to be run out of the fucking country.
Well, what do you expect, the incumbent was a bloodthirsty African warlard.
Foley/Negron is conceding. It was close though.
294 - down boy...
(or, to quote an oldie but goodie: "Chopper! Sick! Balls!")
Warlard? The imagination reels at the potential visuals.
Also, first Muslim elected to Congress.
I'm still doing the happy Santorum dance.
Be sure to wipe up afterward.
It was close though.
48% is pretty damn good when the guy on the ballot is an alcoholic sex predator. Props to the Republican GOP.
Just got back from election judging, we were the first precinct in our ward to report in. Also, I had a weird GG Allin dream last night which was mostly about a female cop shooting her male cop lover in the head for no reason (driven mad by Allin's antics). But mostly, what I want to say is:
ELLISON! The man of the hour!
ELLISON! A thumb in the eye for every xenophobic Xtian in the land!
ELLISON! Carrying the green banner of Wellstone forward into the 21st century!
ELLISON! I said "hi" to him at the Heart of the Beast Mayday Parade!
ELLISON! Now that he's elected in Minnesota's 5th district, HE'S NEVER GOING TO LEAVE!
And we might put the boot in to Tim Pawlenty too tonight!
Asa Hutchinson loses Ark Gov, another impeachment bitch goes down.
48% is pretty damn good when the guy on the ballot is an alcoholic sex predator
There are a lot of crazy people in this country.
Althouse has some funny pictures from the CNN thing. I think she's insinuating that T Rex is gay.
299: Santorum! (expl.) Why did I hit refresh again before commenting, only to be pwned!
Warlard? The imagination reels at the potential visuals.
Guns vs. I Can't Believe It's Not Butter.
Does anyone have a count on the House?
props to the Republican GOP
Is there a Democratic one?
Does anyone have a count on the House?
I think Dems have 8 of required 15 pickups so far. I don't think they've lost any of their own.
Asa Hutchinson loses Ark Gov, another impeachment bitch goes down.
Remember when people were talking him up as presidential material? That was weird.
Looking good for getting rid of Pawlenty, but fucking Bachman looks like she's going to win, and she's a psycho hosebeast.
MSNBC projects a Democratic house.
Hey guys, it's analysis time -- Daily Show is on.
Dems pick up another House seat in CT.
322 is behind the times.
Hey, Vermont just elected Bernie Sanders. Socialism is not dead, it's just very cold.
The Dems have picked up AZ-08 and FL-22. Two more!
Oh Snap, DCCC says Shaw goes down in FLA-22, one to go.
Brit Hume is predicting a Democratic house, but Fox hasn't made the call.
Why is MSNBC's count showing two independents in the Senate? They already called for Sanders and Lieberman... forgetting somebody, guys?
318: I can deal with Bachmann winning, because she'll be marginalized in a Dem-majority house, and ELLISON!'s votes will cancel hers out exactly anyway. Pawlenty has been far more disastrous for Minnesota and the country. I think the Wetterling campaign's big mistake though, was in not just putting up a bunch of signs that said "BACHMANN=WISCONSIN SYNOD". If they'd done that in September they'd have picked up another 10% of the district with no problem.
333 That'll happen when you do too many beer bongs with the Greeks...
CNN now also calls the House for the Dems. Hallefuckinglujah.
DCCC says we're there, just need to hold...ah fuck it, let's get a nice 25 seat majority, I'm feeling frisky.
That'll happen when you do too many beer bongs with the Greeks...
...and beat your wife.
340 -- Glenn Reynolds is in congress???!!!
I hope someone brought a digital camera and posts photo's of Joe D.'s exposed genitalia.
Samantha B. is in Maplewood, nextdoor to me!
Now that we're there, can we all admit our Al Qaeda ties?
(Memo to NSA, I kid...I meant neckties...)
A CNN reporter just said that the Dem leaders aren't quite convinced that they're going to hold all their seats though, so not celebrating yet.
Welcome back to America, kids. So sweet.
To Henry Waxman, and being served!
All apart from today's wins, the thing that made me happiest tonight was seeing so many first-time voters -- especially young adults and new citizens -- voting in my precinct. Even though our absolute turnout was not very high (462 voters vs. 1105 registered at the beginning of the day), we did same-day registrations for 108 people! Imagine the possible gains for good candidates if there was same-day registration everywhere! All of those nuisance voters from the mega-churches are registered months in advance. We could pick up so many of the disgruntled and (literally) disenfranchised.
I really want the senate though. so many creaky old coots and crones on the SC
I thought the only challenged Dem held seats were in GA- the Dem is up by ~1 point in both with 92% reporting.
I believe the Dems have now held all their vulnerable governors (any word from MN?). There has never been an election where a party failed to pick up at least one congressional seat from the opposition, but if the Dems hold their house seats, it will happen.
The Senate was always a long shot, but I had managed to get my hopes up anyway.
Ooh look, Dan Rather is on the Daily Show.
354: And the rumor is that Stevens is planning to retire. (I think that's always the rumor.)
I'm watching some crappy cable channel since I don't get MSNBC, CNN, etc. (It's CN8- comcast news channel?) The anchor is saying how some networks are calling for Democrats but she can't understand it because the reported votes show the Rep up even though they called for the D. I guess when you're too dumb to be on MSNBC you end up on CN8.
There are 2223 write-ins in VA senate. WTF?
this just in:
hastert is married to his clone!
Allen's lead is down to 8,000 with 97% reporting. So we get a recount and an FBI investigation. Jesus.
Dan Rather on the Daily Show is not quite as fun as one might hope. Though perhaps as surreal as one might hope.
Dennis Hastert says "Buh-bye!"
Woo-hoo! Hook 'em!
361 -- that doesn't seem so unbelievable. Out of what, 2 million or more votes cast?
Hey look, it's a washed up former football player.
Shit, wine in grocery stores ballot question lost.
Holy shit. Virginia's reporting 49 percent turnout. Forty-nine fucking percent. Un fucking believable.
Hey, just as an intellectual exercise, can anyone explain George Allen's appeal in any kind of positive terms?
374: He positively hates black people.
I'd like to have a beer with him. Then we'd go stuff decapitated deer heads in people's mailboxes.
Not that it makes a difference now, but Allen's lead is falling fast.
355: Do you mean ME? Cause the Strib has Pawlenty (R, Incumbent) down 37,000 votes vs. Hatch (D) in MN.
Thanks, Tim, that clears it right up. Especially against a moderate-republican sort like Jim Webb, who's full of authenticity and anti-elite resentment. I so don't get this.
Woot! CNN projects South Dakota abortion ban loses.
No, ME was called Dem, but I hadn't seen MN- was that also called?
Allen's lead down to 4722 with 97.42% reporting. At the rate things are changing, Webb could take the lead.
379: No problem. I think it really is a shares our values thing, and that the people choosing him over Webb are choosing Republicans (and more specifically, the GWB party) over the elitist Blues. And, if you were a VA voter, he probably hasn't hurt the state, so why not?
Not to mention the people who thought that George Allen was the Democrat, of course.
382: Precious few precincts left, though.
It's like choosing Ronald Reagan over a real cowboy. I hate the shares our values crowd sometimes.
Allen is now up by less than 5000 votes. Because everyone likes election lawyers!
Nope, the governor's race hasn't been called, but the syntax seemed to suggest that it was thought that a Dem was the incumbent. I'm going to try to go to sleep and hope that I wake up to much better news than I did on on Nov. 5, 1980, the first post-election morning letdown I remember.
I see no reason why October treason should ever be forgot.
385- Yes, but at 95% reporting, I think Webb was down 12k. It's precincts, not votes, so it's hard to guess how many votes are still out there.
It goes to a recount for sure; I just heard the absentees were already counted.
That's because he's gay, Ogged. What did he do?
390: But "95%" refers to precincts, not votes, correct? Are there still absentee ballots to be counted?
Fuck Allen.
Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House? Dear god, I love it. This is gonna be fun.
What did he do?
Something about how he talks; it's just words, not connected to anything but spin.
Checking the results, I only now learn that a former roommate of mine is running for Congress. Probably shouldn't say more.
Nancy Pelosi is a pretty bad public face, says me, having seen her in pretty limited capacities.
But you know what I fucking hate? Our Proposition 1--SC's anti-gay marriage amendment--passed by something like 75% to 25% percent. That's a little disheartening.
Dems take majority of governorships.
394- I think 390 answered both your questions.
398: She definitely looks like she took a few too many trips to the Botox clinic. But that didn't seem to harm DeLay.
But, I hasten to add, she's shrewd behind the scenes.
Nancy Pelosi is a pretty bad public face
Yeah, agreed, though I think she may grow on me (and others). In any case, Dennis Hastert, dude.
She looks to me like she's spent a hell of a lot of time saying, "now wait just one minute, because this shit isn't going to fly." Which is *exactly* what we need in the House. With that and the SD ban failing, I feel like I just got a li'l birthday present. Whoo!
Allen's lead is 3,000. So they tied. Maybe we'll have some lynchings before this one's over.
405: B, you're in the tank for any female in power. You're an HRC supporter, for Cripes sake. But she helped us get where we are now, and I think she'll grow or delegate.
94: That's true, but they tend to break right (though I don't know specifically about Virginia). I'm resigning myself to nurturing my contempt for Green Party voters for another few years.
Webb is going to take the lead. A change of 0.25% reporting improved his position by 1100 votes, so there are still plenty out there.
Yeah, Hastert was both inarticulate and horrifying to look at. (Clarification: "bad public face" in the sense of being not so good at putting things in a clear and compelling way, not in any aesthetic sense.) I hope she follows the Hastert strategy of doing all sorts of clever things out of the public eye and leaving the show to others.
Well, heckfire, getting all cheery and stuff, and so checking the listings I find "La Strada" "L'Avventura", and "Paris,Texas". Get my head back right, ya know.
Happy for the kids, like arze and saisegly. Proud of them that worked so hard. Politics is always frustrating, but hope rocks. Hope is good. Now we got some hope.
And some motherfucking power.
"It's like choosing Ronald Reagan over a real cowboy. I hate the shares our values crowd sometimes."
Yeah, this. Srsly wtf.
Please dear God and All the Saints in Heaven, let me be wrong. For once.
Shorter Labs: VA, why dindt' you throw batteries?
407: Au contraire. I loathe Kathleen Harris. I'm not a big fan of Condi Rice. Karen Hughes can bite me.
I like Pelosi and Clinton because they are unapologetic feminists, and because they've held the line on some pretty important stuff in the last few years. Pelosi's agenda is discipline, which we're all agreed the Dems badly need. She's not gonna waver or dither. What else could you possibly want?
KS-02 (fucking KS!) flips to Dems.
Alas, Mean Jean Schmidt is going to hold on again, shit. That fucks my bingo boards.
409 - I just checked a few hot spots based on what knowledge I have of Virginia population centers (I worked in NoVA for four years). There's one precinct left in the heavily pro-Allen VA Beach, 4 in heavily pro-Webb Richmond, one in heavily pro-Webb Arlington, and a combined 43 in the exurban and mildly pro-Webb Loudon and Prince William Counties. This one gets decided in court.
Webb is going to win. I spent some time on the Virginia state board of electors comparing results between 2004 and this election, and there is easily enough absentee ballots left in Fairfax county alone to push him over the top. He will win.
holy shit i just saw about webb. and it's possible that the remaining votes will be stronger for Webb!!!!!!
CNN says Webb in the lead by about 2,500 votes. But Greenfield said about 25,000 votes left to count. But CNN also says most of those in Dem districts.
FYI, it looks like Jim Leach (R, Iowa 2nd district) loses--his challenger, Dave Loebsack, is ahead by 4 points with 55 districts reporting.
Leach is a 34 year incumbent.
Colbert just called the House for the Cowards.
Wow, this is engiddifying. Becks-style.
Compare, for instance:
http://www.sbe.state.va.us/web_docs/election/results/2004/nov2004/detail059.htm#01
and
http://sbe.virginiainteractive.org/nov2006/detail059.htm#02
The lower turnout is counteracted in part by the fact that every district is swinging much more heavily in Webb's favor than Kerrys.
From WH spokesperson Emily Lawrimore: "Karl has informed the president that they've lost the majority in the House. He's obviously disappointed, but he's eager to work with Congress on his priorities and issues important to Americans."
I'm savoring the image of a blind-drunk bush hurling a lamp at Rove's head and then collapsing back into a pool of his own vomit... right this very moment.
Even Rahm Emanuel calls the House for the Dems. Safe to celebrate, I think. Sweet, sweet relief.
Yeah, where are you getting your VA numbers? And does anyone know if McCaskill stands a chance?
Yes on Sebelius.
I believe Dems have now held all their vulnerable senate seats and all their vulnerable governorships.
Now, everyone hope on the Senate. And how drunk do you think the NYers are right now?
Yeeeehhhhawwwwww!
You fucking go, Jim Webb. YOU THROW THOSE FUCKING BATTERIES.
So no R pickups at all? I believe that would be a first.
Awesome. Go, Kansas.
I wonder if it helped that Phil Asshole Kline's office leaked confidential medical information of minors to Bill Falafel O'Reilly. (According to O'Reilly.)
VA numbers are at CNN, they actually seem to be more up to date than the official VA web site. (Get out the tinfoil hats)
Also, the South Dakota abortion ban got voted down.
Holy crap, 93% of Republicans still voted for Allen? Virginia Republicans have no souls.
I admit to drinking a Mexican beer, because Webb was down and I lost hope. I'm happy to report that I've switched to bourbon.
Tester well up but only 19% reporting.
Talent up by 4% (54000) with 60% reporting, that doesn't look good unless it's St Louis that's still out.
Ford a lot closer than predicted, but probably done (down 59000 with 88% reporting)
WEBB'S IN FRONT!
YOU'RE MY FAVORITE LIE!
440: Color me stunned, and potentially thrilled.
Also, AZ called for Rep, but that was a long shot.
You know, I have officially had an awesome day. Life is good.
Um what the fuck is going on?
Official VA site:
Allen- 1141753
Webb- 1139885
CNN numbers:
Allen- 1138676
Webb- 1141052
I don't think that's logically consistent, unless a district reports their Webb votes to CNN before they report their Allen votes.
Y'know, if Webb wins by 10,000, there won't be a recount. How many votes are still out there?
New CNN numbers:
Webb- 1143144
Allen- 1140879
448: Hometown boys, the Archers.
I think you have some numbers transposed, SP, but I was wondering about the discrepency myself. It's not just that one source has more updated numbers.
447: St. Louis City has mostly reported, but St. Louis County, which are the moderately Democratic inner suburbs of St. Louis, has barely reported (it's also much bigger than the city of St. Louis). Also Jackson County, which is where Kansas City is, and which shows a sizeable margin for McCaskill, also has about half its votes left to report.
I'd just like to point out that people who voted for the Green candidate in VA suck.
VA site might be slower on the updates?
OK, one second of parade-raining: it took an awful lot to get to this point. I mean, our friends across the aisle got to screw a great many things up before they got handed this vote, which is depressing as hell.
Now back to euphoria.
459: "in VA" s/b "for national office"
That site says it's unofficial.
It's reporting unofficial results, but it's an official State of Virginia site.
Awesome -- I'm in a bar that's showing CNN with the, you know, subtitles on the screen, and they just had "with 99 percent of the votes -- previctims -- precincts reporting..."
I mean, our friends across the aisle got to screw a great many things up before they got handed this vote, which is depressing as hell.
Don't get too upset, mon vieux - a lot of that is the power of inertia/the status quo to enforce itself. It's taken a while, but now the status quo is on our side in all these races.
cbs website

allen 6984
va official website
http://sbe.vipnet.org/nov2006/l_02.htm
total:
webb 1139885
allen 1141753
isle of wight county:
webb 5050
allen 6984
due to the location of the county, either number could be correct
just a heads-up, webb may be losing 4000 votes
Shepard Smith sucks. I'm going to bed.
Just got back from the TN District 9 victory party for Steve Cohen. Democratic House, Free Beer: how much better could an evening get?
464- who's reporting 100%
466- Uh oh, I'd trust the VA numbers, since some monkey at CNN has to copy the numbers over.
If Tester and Webb hold on, I'll have called the Senate correctly. Now for the 30-seat pickup in the House.
just a heads-up, webb may be losing 4000 votes
So we're all hanging on a typo?
468: Cohen was the white guy who won the primary for the Ford seat after several black candidates split the vote? Him winning the general election is a great sign for our GOTV operations, I suppose.
people who voted for the Green candidate in VA suck
Yeah, she showed up at a Webb campaign event yesterday and said something like, "If you can't vote for me, vote for change." The local public radio dude tried to pin her down, asking her if she was telling her supporteres to vote Webb, but her answer was all evasive. And teh lame.
people who voted for the Green candidate in VA suck
MN gov is very tight, 2000 votes, again a green fuckup with 8000. (And some independent who has ~10%, I don't know if he's liberal or conservative)
CNN currently has Webb ahead by 3,000 votes...
supporteres, of course, because they are illiterate.
And French.
We should probably consider moving this to a fresh thread.
Virginia really scares me; I think it'll be massively ugly, especially if MT and MO go Dem.
475: I say the first thing Dems do in the House is vote to authorize drilling ANWR. In a bill named after the Indep. Green party.
Seriously, how many more times does this green thing have to happen?
478: Well, true. Who's our resident Green troll again?
I'd just like to say that I feel a personal sense of accomplishment -- I canvassed and made phone calls for a candidate that actually won. Woot Whitehouse!
http://sbe.virginiainteractive.org/index.htm
Webb officially pulls into the lead.
Ah, that's better- VA web site has Webb up by 1898 with 18 precints (0.74%) to report.
I feel guilty now, I voted green for governor in IL. Stupid green.
The official VA results also have Webb leading now.
472: That's correct. One of Ford's younger brothers was in the Democratic Primary, and another one ran in the general election as an independent.
There was fear that Jake Ford would split the Dem vote, but Cohen won a solid victory with 60% of the vote. First non-Ford to hold the 9th district seat in 30 years, and it's about damn time!
Seriously, Cohen has a great liberal/progressive record in the TN state senate, and he's going to be a damn good Representative.
CNN just made the Heisenberg 4000 votes point.
I think it's going to be 50 seats for the Dems, with Webb (*fingers crossed*) and Tester.
We should probably consider moving this to a fresh thread.
Is it slowing down for you? I was thinking 600 comments, since it's getting late anyway.
So we're all hanging on a typo?
so it seems...
I'd trust the va numbers, since they have about the same number of voters voting for senator as voting for the ballot questions and house rep.
http://sbe.vipnet.org/nov2006/093.htm#02
Hey, everyone I voted for -- county, state and national -- is winning, and so is everyone I gave money. I don't believe this has ever happened before . . .
McCaskill has closed somewhat in the last 9% of precincts, but it looks not so good.
479: I just got in trouble with the missus for saying I wanted to shit in Peter Hutchinson's mouth. Something about being uncivil.
Ann Althouse: "You know, Lieberman is the only candidate I can identify with. And it's not as if I love him."
Also, I think she's wearing an inappropriately "racy" top.
An hour ago I was Becks-style but far from a computer.
Yay Dems, but fuck Joe Lieberman and fuck Harry Reid for saying that Lieberman will retain his seniority. I don't want him getting any committee chairs.
491: source? KOB has her up by about 900, 58% of precincts reporting. Which really sucks, considering the 20k democratic advantage in registration.
I am so unbelievably Becks-style, about an hour after brief Bexting (texting with Becks) and I want Chris Matthews to eat my ass on national television for having spouted his stupid-ass "the Democrats need a plan on Iraq!" bullshit. HEY GUESS WHAT the Republican Party should have had a plan on Iraq if they were so fucking hot to invade it. Also I think I should not be commenting at this point because I am fucking TRASHED.
Also, Tom DeLay/Delay/Whatthefuckever really fucking looks like he's straight out of that Primus video where dudes were made of plastic. Dude is fucking creepy. Frank Luntz is on the TV right now and he just said "Speaker Pelosi is smart," and I swear to the gods I just got a chub. Fuck to oboe I shouldn't post that.
Ok folks, apo opened a new thread, since this one is getting a little slow. Meet you upsite.
So we're all hanging on a typo?
503: Best Becks-style comment ever.
House senate still trading around 40 on tradesports. House GOP at 0.2.
It seems ineffecient for everyone to reload 500 comments every tme.
I think I'm in love with McManley's pants now.
Shit, that made no sense. GOP senate at 40, GOP house at 0.2. I'm moving to the new thread.
503 brought to you by the letters "Southern Comfort" and the number "Jazz Diet Pepsi" because, Jesus, that's just how it is.
Weird, somehow a few minutes ago CNN was showing McCaskill barely up with 74% counted, and now it's back to showing Talent up by 3 with 71% counted. Was that just a glitch?
