It's going to be OK, Tim. Go to your happy place.
There's no place like Texas! There's no place like Texas!
I'm so very conflicted. It's like amending the Constitution--not to be done lightly.
I'm not promising to abide by the result of the poll or anything crazy like that. But it's more likely to be done (or at least tested) if there's overwhelming support for one option.
Take a principled stand and vote no, on the grounds that the initiative system is chaotic and ungovernable.
Now I'm tempted to find out if we can stuff the ballot box. But that would be wrong.
Why wouldn't you want this. Posts are insignifican't compared to comment size, and going back and forth is annoying. whats the downside?
Why not just having everyone switch around their pseudonyms? Or maybe we can all promise to comment naked. Or just commit ourselves to a larger project: the total destruction of the fabric of society.
I voted for it before I voted against it.
I'm pretty sure there's already a good deal of naked commenting going on.
Would the proposed comment+post window open in a new wee window as comments currently do, or would it open in the current browser window, full-sized and glorious?
I forget that some people get the little pop-up window. Here ya go, a screenshot of me composing this comment.
Are people actually voting, or will everyone just talk it over in this thread and be done with it? For some reason I hope it's the latter.
You get what you linked by simply left clicking on the word comment under the main post body? To get that I can either right click there and then select "open link in new tab" or left click in the "recent comments" sidebar.
You can see the tally if you click "View" in the poll.
Also, Changebad was thankfully leading at last check.

I used to, with the previous version of Firefox and TabMixPlus (and still do at work, because now I'll never upgrade), but at home I have to right-click, new tab.
18: What are the four FF extensions represented in the lower right corner of the screenshot?
L-R: Videodownloader, Stylish, IE Tab, Gspace (which I never use, but think is a very cool idea).
Stylish and GMail Notifier are two of them, don't recognize the others...
Uh, guess that wasn't gmail, never mind...what's gspace?
People the windows on whose desktop are all maximized are so weird.
Gspace uses your gmail account as an online drive. It's a great idea, but I keep thinking that google will change some little thing in gmail that will break gspace, and then I'll have a bunch of strangely named attachments. Looking at it now, I realize it's been so long that I'm not even sure how to use it anymore.
People the structure of whose sentences are all flip-floppy are so weird.
28: WTF is the point of having a decently-sized monitor if you're not going to use the space? Or am I missing the hidden joy of scrolling?
My complaint about gmail is: if one starts a reply, ponders, and then decides against replying, gmail has already created a draft, which then prevents the user from seeing subsequent replies from the other person. Is there a way around this rubbish?
People the structure of whose sentences are all flip-floppy are so weird.
People the number of whose verbs is all wrong are so weird.
31: Not maximizing allows you to have several windows in view at once, accessible without needing to toggle through them. It's actually a better use of huge monitors, which are a bit excessive for a single window, for the most part.
Flip-floppy is an adjective. Obviously.
The point, Matt F, is that "structure" is singular and "are" is plural.
I already get posts + comments in my bloglines pane. Color me very confused.
Oh. Do you mean here? Right now, this page I am commenting on? Don't I have a right to not vote? not to vote? to vote not?
32: There's a "discard" button for the draft, if you decide you don't want to reply.
Though if you don't want to get rid of it, they just updated gmail with this new feature:
Ever replied to a message only to find out that someone sent a better, smarter reply right before you? Now, if someone sends a reply while you're in the middle of reading a conversation (or replying to it), you'll get a notification that a new message has arrived. Click "update conversation" to see what you’ve missed.
34: Depends on the app. Terminal sessions I leave at 80x40, so I can have multiple windows displayed at once. Browsers? Maximized. IDE? Maximized. But this is why I have two 19" monitors at work; I can maximize stuff on one monitor and still see other windows on the other one.
Er, yes. Never mind my casual illiteracy.
38: Hmph. Okay, I'll try that. Thanks.
In a gesture of reciprocity, I offer you my latest gmail ad link:
Now more than ever, it is increasingly important for us to follow the Biblical maxim, “Be still and know that I am God.” Only time will tell how the human spirit responds to the siren-call of the Computer Age. We owe a debt to the work of Radiohead, and others, for showing us that blindly embracing the age can often lead to an evisceration of the spiritual life, and for that warning, we should be grateful.
On viewing, I see that Changebad leads Change by a Webb-like margin, but even better, I learn that I can "Predict exactly, down to the name, who you Love Soul Mate is." Down to the name -- is there anything the Internet can't tell me?
i keep my text pretty big. i like to lean backj.
I'd rather when I clicked Comments, the blog changed to a page with the post at the top and then the comments underneath - the way most WordPress blogs seem to these days. There seems to be something kind of old-fashioned to me about pop-up commments boxes. And I try to remember to do "open in new tab" but often I forget.
i keep my text pretty big. i like to lean backj.
Not a euphemism?
I tried to vote twice but was denied. Must I really go use a co-worker's computer to accomplish my goals? That's very inconvenient.
I cannot believe that (a) you made me vote, an act which makes me feel dirty, or (b) CHANGEBAD is losing. I demand a recount, and will vigorously pursue any and all avenues toward that end.
You get what you linked by simply left clicking on the word comment under the main post body?
I recommed a scroll-wheel click for easy tab opening, if you're so blessed as to have that mouse capability.
22, 45 (maybe?), and 48: What are the disadvantages of the proposed change?
Yes! CHANGEGOOD is creeping into the lead!
A-and why is your engine "sorry" I voted? Didn't want me to vote? Fuckers.
50: Should you be allowed to marry and make sweet, sweet love to your dog? Maybe--if you can demonstrate consent, I'm not sure I see principled objection--but society is simply not ready for it. We need time to make sense of these sorts of changes, to understand what effects they might have. My Gawd, man, the cattle guard must be there for a reason!
Would it be good if threads were about posts to a greater degree than they currently are?
No, that would suck.
What are the purported benefits of this change?
Avoiding clicking back and forth between tabs.
Do the costs outweigh the benefits?
You have to decide that for yourself.
I get the wee pop-up, and I like it, because the post is right next to the wee pop-up no matter what comment I've scrolled to. If comments were in a full-sized window with the post at the top, it would just cause unnecessary bouncing up and down within the window, which I already do for you schmucks who reply using comment number instead of italicized text.
I get the wee pop-up, and I like it
Maybe if you tried an adult-sized one, you'd find it more satisfying.
But here's the deal -- what if I want to hip some non-Mineshaft-aware humanoid to the beauty of an Unfogged thread? Currently what I usually do is send them the comments link and figure if they are interested, they will click on the permalink at the top of the thread. Or if the post is vital to understanding the thread, I will send them the permalink with an instruction to click on the comments link for Mineshafty goodness. If one link would encapsulate both entities, that would be just fine.
If the texts of the posts start appearing on the comment pages, I will organize a boycott of the blog. If enough people walk out with me (and I may offer cash incentives!), your ad revenues are going to end up in the toilet. Just keep that in mind as you think through this important decision.
What are the disadvantages of the proposed change?
I think BitchPhd discovered the disadvantages two">http://www.unfogged.com/cgi-sys/cgiwrap/unfogged/managed-mt/mt-comments.cgi?entry_id=5781#437098">two threads up.
Let's hear it for improperly formatted HTML!

What mike d is trying to say, people, is that Bitch Ph. D.'s desire never to have seen a photo of Labs' rectum is reason enough not to include post text in the comments window.
Shorter 65: rectum damn near killed him.
Cramming both the post and comments into the wee window is lame. Also, CHANGEBAD.
Currently 71-70 to keep as is. Shades of Webb vs. Allen in Virginia, but there the forces of change eventually triumphed.
My dad showed me a colonoscopy when I was about 15. He must have thought it would get me interested in medicine as a career. It was a pretty blah, neutral experience. I personally would rather not have observed Ogged's either, but I finally did click.
Where did -gg-d post his colonoscopy?
Seriously, a small comment-box is much easier to disguise as a window in Outlook than a full browser window. Don't cut into my jerking off on the internets at work ability!
You're jerking off to pictures of Labs' colon? God, I hate this place.
Don't be petty, B. Post pictures of your colon and we'll jerk off to those, too.
I will not hate if it changes, but I have to say my favorite thing about the little pop-up comments box is that it is easily read over top of a work-related browser tab and easily hidden behind something else small and work-related, like terminal windows and such. It can be used with discretion.
Also, narrow comment window = easier to read, IMO.
74 -- These things are equally true of a GreatNews RSS reader FWIW.
73: I am happy to report that there exist no pictures of my colon, as it is trouble-free.
I agree with L. about the value of the little comment box. It's one of my favorite things about the formatting of unfogged. That and the fact that I can see what people commented on most recently.
I think that it might be cool to have a copy of the original post up top in the comment box so that Clown et al. can link to comments with posts attached, but that should be added in an "In addition to" kind of way, not as a replacement.
Also, I really like the fact that crookedtimber shows me how my comment will appear once posted without my having to click through to a preview window. Maybe I wouldn't have qquite so many typos, if a feature like that were added here someday. Just sayin.
I sympathize with the CHANGEBAD faction, but it might be time for a few tweaks. So, I don't know.
76: Not everybody who gets colonic glamour shots are having problems with their colon. Some of us are just proud.
Let me know if you want to arrange a sitting, B. So to speak.
I sympathize with the CHANGEBAD faction, but it might be time for a few tweaks. So, I don't know.
Wimp.
(The CT preview feature, also available at the High Clearing, is very nice indeed. But typos sort of add to the fun here at the Mineshaft.)
