There is a counter theory that global warming is related to the wobble in the earths orbit around the sun. At this time the science concerning global warming is still new. There have already been a few hasty proclamations that have turned out to be incorrect. Two of the biggest are concerning the hole in the ozone layer and CFC's. There is no reason to discourage the energy industry from spending some of their money to study this field. Who knows, the field might actually get some useful information out of it.
The existence of countertheories doesn't negate the basic physics of energy absorption and re-radiation. There is enormous scientific consensus -- no hasty proclamations there -- on the greenhouse mechanism of warming. And yes, we might get some useful information, but we already have reams of useful information that are being put to no use.
Further study is fine, but stalling is not.
