What I'm saying is that I don't understand the cause for your reflections.
In polite society, the word "slut" has been all but retired, and not just the word, but the concept itself
I guess that depends on your definition of polite society. I still hear it used plenty, and not ironically.
No comment on Angelina Jolie; hasn't she been rather famously monogamously coupled these last few years?
Isn't the defining characteristic of a slut a large number of sexual partners? I don't know that Jolie is known for that.
Don't forget that Teo and I were here in your time of need, running up your comment numbers. I want a little credit next time somebody threatens to liquidate me.
(Actually, to echo Ben: What was the chain of thoughts that led you to this question?)
You're right. I think that "slut," where used, is generally used to describe someone who is having sex with a lot of people for bad reasons. There is some lack of personal control associated with the indiscriminate sex. I don't think that's true of Jolie; if she has a lot of sex with a lot of different people, it's because she likes having sex with a lot of different people, and nothing more.
Who took down the other post? I had an excellent pun dealing with anticlimactic endings on the way.
In a conversation mere hours ago, a friend described Angelina as "slutty" and I argued. Turns out, my friend meant something more like erotic, or sensual, and didn't really grope long enough for the right word.
didn't really grope long enough
How insensitive!
Jolie is plenty out of control, or has been. The difference is that she looks as though she could break you in two with her mind. And you don't say nasty things about such people.
Who am I and what am I doing here? I was somewhere else, but it just disappeared.
Slut mostly just means 'woman who's sexuality I disapprove of'. It doesn't really mean 'woman who has a lot of partners' or anything like that, it's just a sexualized term of control for women who's sexuality is perceived as out of control. Jolie could be as chaste as Mother Teresa and she's still be called a slut by some people, because something about her will just trigger some people's 'she's too comfortable with her sexuality' radar.
I'm not sure I buy that, Nbarnes. I think the word does mean something to the people who use, and it seems to me that Jolie is less likely to be called a slut than other women who are similarly, if not identically, sensual/sexual.
So what is the word for the female sexual predator? Predator not referring to pedophilia or whatever, but a woman who agressively seeks many temporary partners? One male term is stud.
In my day we had a gender-neutral term:"ball-freak" Is that still around?
Not that has anything to do with Jolie, and I don't know what ogged is talking about.
"ball-freak" Is that still around?
I've never heard it.
Never heard it, either. Also, I never hear guys who sleep around a lot called "studs" anymore, except when the description is meant to be funny.
Jolie is slutty only if you take her appearance to be an advertisement for sex: if you believe her lips, for example, to be amplified, for the puffiness and redness associated with sexual arousal.
But lipstick does the same thing. (Sort of.)
I suppose the claim would be that Jolie's lips are over the top.
I still hear "slut" used in the classic sense from time to time, but less than I used to, although this might be a result of getting older. I've always been fond of "whore".
I think this post answers definitively that yes you can troll on your own blog. It's been mentioned before, but now there can be no arguing it.
17,18:What do I know? Maybe it was unique to our locale, or group. But I suppose "freak" isn't used anymore either.
We were all freaks, and most of us centered our lives around dope. Some few, of either gender, sought sex and trophies or conquests to the point they thought of little else;were not monogamous and rarely had sex with the same person twice; were not safe around your partner, especially if you cared. Mostly, tho not exlusively, hetero at that time. We called them "ball-freaks" without much hostility or judgement. Think Alfie or Swingers, or Dangerous Housewives. Whatever.
My question stands. " Promiscuous" doesn't quite make it, and "slut" carries too much baggage. Do y'all kids have a term?
Damnit, that last post should have just been:
"If I were to be sexist, this is how I would do it," by Ogged.
Damnit, that last post should have just been:
"If I were to be sexist, this is how I would do it," by Ogged.
Do y'all kids have a term?
"Skank" gets thrown around a bit.
Dude, I troll my own blog all the time, but not in this post.
"Skank" doesn't have the connotations of conquest that bob's looking for, though, I don't think.
Ok, I don't troll it all the time, and definitely not in this post!
"Ball freak" is a pretty good term. I think it meets the test of cromulence, outlined in the thread below. "Ball freak" it will be.
And I think the answer to ogged's question is: you don't insult intimidating people. It doesn't really matter what the insult is. Insults are rude for everyone, but where the object of the insult is a badass, you fabricate some special reason that it can't apply. "Slut" shouldn't apply to anyone. There's no special reason why it shouldn't apply to Jolie, except that she could kill you.
So what is the word for the female sexual predator? Predator not referring to pedophilia or whatever, but a woman who agressively seeks many temporary partners? One male term is stud.
I've never actually heard a woman described in this way, but I think some people use the word "man-eater". You know, like the Hall and Oates song.
"Ball freak" is a pretty good term.
If if heard "ball freak" applied to a guy, I'd think he was being called gay.
Because she will fucking kill you.
I do think the intimidation is a big part of it, but it doesn't work to say that she'll kill you, because, obviously, you're a nobody and she'll never hear about it. (I also think there's something to SCMT's "self control" explanation.) Is there a neediness that's associated with sluttiness that she doesn't have? (And neediness is distinct from rapaciousness.)
What is it about Jolie that makes you think people would call her a slut, ogged?
Is there a neediness that's associated with sluttiness
I think you're on to something here. Seems like I instinctually think of Angelina Jolie and Sophia Lauren differently than I do Christina Aguilera and Paris Hilton. Like the latter two try too hard.
I don't understand 39. I'm saying people wouldn't call her a slut.
I kind of think of it this way: "slutty" is somehow akin to "easy," which itself means that--for good or ill--you won't have to expend an inordinate amount of effort to get someone into bed. I don't think that the other person's effort makes a difference to someone like Jolie, except insofar as she wants to see you dance, monkey, dance. But you're not convincing her; she is merely selecting you from her harem.
SCMT is on track. We used to call an out-of-control promsicuous male a "man-whore," which was pretty pejorative.
I still have some sort of internal distinction between promiscuous people (good) and sluts (bad) that's difficult to articulate or jusify, but it's centered around some notion of being in control or willing the outcome. That is, if you choose to have more parnters, more power to you, but if you rack up a big tally because you're lookig for something else in the wrong places, that's slutty. Does that mak any sense?
40 -
I disagree about Aguilera tryig too hard.
I'm saying people wouldn't call her a slut.
But you seem to find that somehow remarkable. Why?
45: Because people, like susan's friend, do wrongly refer to her as slutty.
I disagree about Aguilera tryig too hard.
46: That's not ogged's claim (which is, incidentally, dubious), though.
35 would make sense for a person unfamiliar with the term "ballin.'"
would make sense for a person unfamiliar with the term "ballin.'"
I'm heard "ballin", but to me calling a guy "ball freak" would sound like he has an affinity for balls.
Teo, my thinking was something like this: "slut" is usually taken to mean "a woman who has many sexual partners" or even "a woman who is (too) desirous of sex," but while both of those things are true of Jolie (as far as we know...persona...etc.), it seems to me that she's less likely to be called a slut that one might expect. I was wondering why that was, and whether that gives us more information about what "slut" means to the people who use it.
I've never heard you ballin', gswift, and I don't want to start now.
I wish I was a little bit taller / Wish I enjoyed testicles
I've never heard you ballin', gswift, and I don't want to start now.
Jesus. My typing is all over the place tonight.
both of those things are true of Jolie (as far as we know...persona...etc.)
Really? I don't follow celebrity news closely, but I hadn't known she had that reputation. If so, that makes the post more understandable.
Do you only know Jolie from her new Mother Teresa phase?
No, but the impression I had of her reputation was more along these lines.
Man, where have the good old days of "blood vial toting bisexual skank" gone?
The distinction between that and these is part of what I'm interested in. Off to bed...alone...
Okay then. I would just say that Jolie is a better fit for the "maneater" stereotype than the "slut" stereotype, and leave it at that.
Although "slut" is also used as an all-purpose insult for women, and as such is sometimes applied to Jolie (see the link in 48).
There's a certain amount of powerlessness that is sometimes associated with 'slut' that is clearly inaaplicable in Jolie's case. However, in response to ogged in 14, I'd say that, yes, a person does have something in mind when they say 'slut', but what it is that they have in mind is generally an impression rather than some Slut Rules, Useful In Fallen Woman Watching To Determine if You're Watching A Slut, Whore, or Bitch. And what constitutes a 'slut' varies from person to person. You can trivially find people that would agree in the hypothetical that a woman who posed nude for Playboy is a slut, even if she's a virgin.
Man, where have the good old days of "blood vial toting bisexual skank" gone?
Her whore days are behind her. Now she's in her Madonna phase.
There's a certain amount of powerlessness that is sometimes associated with 'slut' that is clearly inaaplicable in Jolie's case.
This is pretty much it. Ths topic is distasteful, given that it implies that there is a category of women correctly addressed as sluts, and that it's therefore a matter of linguistic interest to define that term precisely. ("See, nigra is for when they're uppity. If they're doing a nice, respectful job on the yard work, polite people call them colored folk.")
But what I think Ogged is thinking of is the element of passivity. A high school girl who gets raped by the football team is going to get called a slut for having been at the party at all and having had a drink first. A slut was 'Asking for it', in the sense that implies, you know, not actually asking for it. In less hyperbolic terms, slutty implies overly compliant with male desires, not overly desirous herself, and that doesn't look like a good description of Jolie.
But you know? I'd be just as happy if the fine linguistic distinctions governing what sort of contempt we were supposed to hold various women in for having sex were allowed to fade off into the mists of time.
(This seriously wasn't trolling? Man, Ogged, some days I worry about you.)
Mineshaft I need your help: how the hell do you insert a "fold" into a blog post? Using blogger, to the extent that matters. I thought for sure I could answer this with google in 5 minutes, but have been searching over an hour now. Need an answer quickly, if anyone's awake. Mmm... those biscuits smell good...
I've never used Blogger's interface, Brock, so maybe there is more recent info than this, but Google's first pass says you need to edit your templates.
The word implies a certain pathological neediness to me, and I wouldn't think to use it on a rape victim. There're people, though, who're certain that the victim was looking for it, at some level, and so they can use the term in the sense that I think of it.
I don't use the word to refer to actual people, any more than I do the N word (as indicated in 66).
I guess the interesting sociolinguistic (or whatever the right adjective is here) question is whether a couple of 'brothers' who like and more or less respect can use it on each other in a humorous way -- neither of whom would appreciate it's use by a third party. This works, in addition, because the connotation of pathological neediness is inapplicable: if O really thought FL was that way, he wouldn't use the term. (Unless he's a jerk at a level beyond anything under current consideration).
Kudos to SB for the hilarious Skee-lo reference.
A high school girl who gets raped by the football team is going to get called a slut for having been at the party at all and having had a drink first. A slut was 'Asking for it', in the sense that implies, you know, not actually asking for it.
Really don't buy that. I can believe that people will claim that a girl who alleges rape was not actually raped and was "slutty" and "asking for it." But no one does or ever has said "Yes, she was raped, and therefore she's a slut." But you're right that the word seems to only be used as an unfair cudgel; I can't think of another way that it gets used.
I can't think of another way that it gets used.
66: But no one does or ever has said "Yes, she was raped, and therefore she's a slut."
But LB's point was specifically not this, right? I thought her post was referring to the various workarounds that tend to arrive at "she was a slut, so it couldn't have been rape." And that's perfectly accurate.
As far as specific slang for sexually powerful or dominant woman goes, "cougar" is current in my neck of the woods but used specifically to mean women over 30 who aggressively hook up with guys in their late teens / early twenties. I've never heard it used anywhere else though, so it could be a Western Canadian thing (or maybe an import from the Maritimes).
I hear "slut" used casually all the time in the sense of "Easy to convince" and it's not at all limited to the sexual. For example, "Kelly's a coffee/electronics slut, we can get he/r to go to Starbuck's/Fry's even when it's cold and raining". And I've never heard "ball freak".
I thought "cougar" originated in the Marina district of SF. But anyway, it's mainstream. I've heard it on "How I Met Your Mother," at least.
77: I will defend my 40 years old Midwestern hippie patois to the death, unless the OED comes calling, in which case, for the sake of immortality, I made it up.
And the original had a hyphen. Maybe I'll get two entries.
A slut, basically, is a woman who has sex more than (whoever's using the term) would, or easier than that person would, or is more sexual than that person thinks she should be, etc. It is, as previously mentioned, little more than a term to regain control of a woman who is seen as acting out of control, or without regard for (whosever) preferences about her sexuality.
Pretty much any sexual behavior or even implication is sufficient to call a woman a slut, because the word doesn't have any solid definition besides "more sexual than I think she should be."
There seems also to be a sort of logical disconnect where a woman can be acting "slutty" -- say, a girl at a hs football party who's had a couple drinks and is out socializing -- where the person using the term both disapproves of her behavior and approves of it: they want her to be "slutty" because then they have a chance at being with her in some hypothetical way, but they also use the word/concept to put blame on her for being that way. I don't really know of any other way to express what I mean here except to call it contempt for women in general. She is an object to be used, fantasized about, "enjoyed," but as a person she is a bad person for "allowing" herself to be such an object.
Ya really just can't win.
[/incoherent ramble]
Eighty comments and no one defends my honor?
As penance for this thread, we must all watch the made-for-HBO movie Gia today.
As penance for this blog, we must all cast ourselves into the sea.
Hasn't the term "freak" been applied in the same sense as this "ball-freak" for about the past 15-20 years? Certainly in hip-hop argot, that's the dominant meaning of the noun form. E.g. the scene in Next Friday (Steve Carr, 2000) where Ice Cube's character walks into his rich uncle's suburban love den, which is festooned with all sorts of sex toys and BDSM equipment and says "Damn Unc', youse a freak!"
"Playa" and "Player" seem to be somewhat passé at this point. It causes me no end of amusement, however, to see young men who affect a "hard" hip-hop style walking around in t-shirts that proclaim the wearer to be "100% Hustler" or the like. It's the kind of linguistic confusion that could get you into a lot of trouble, depending on the context.
82 and 83: Is that movie terrible or good? I ask, because casting oneself into the sea might not be all that penitential if it was a nice sea. Are these parallel statements?
it implies that there is a category of women correctly addressed as sluts
No, it doesn't. You can ask what people who use a term mean by it, even if you don't endorse the beliefs that motivate the use, just like you can ask what Christians mean by "heathen."
Cougar is pretty common now in American cities (or at least I've heard it in LA, DC, and NY), and certainly pejorative. Canonical cougar would be 35-40, recently divorced, and out partying with much younger guys. The mean stereotype would hold that the cougar may be less conventionally attractive, but she's a freak (cf other posts) and thus worth paying attention to. The positive view, if there is one, is sexual empowerment, and broadening of younger dude's horizons.
I'm kind of sad that I know which bars in Pasadena are known as cougar bars, and know several dudes who are 'into the cougar scene.'
and certainly pejorative
For gawd's sake, why?
I'm kind of sad that I know which bars in Pasadena are known as cougar bars,
For gawd's sake, why?
I don't know anyone who'd be flattered to be described as a "cougar" with any seriousness. Going into "the cougar scene" is something that a lot of guys will joke about as a form of standard-lowering, or the kind of things you do on a dare. Ironically I think it's a term more unambiguously negative than "slut" is now.
Brock: "extendable posts" is what the Blogger help menu calls the "fold." I should warn you that I hate the extendable post format that Blogger provides; it automatically provides a fold for every post, whether you need it or not. Maybe the Beta version has cleaned up that problem, maybe someone come up with a hack to fix it, but I hate the whole system and good luck to you.
For gawd's sake, why?
One suspects that ever since slut got coopted, there was a vacuum in the space of ways to be an asshole.
Not only is my character defamed, but I'm made to think of Garth Brooks lyrics:
I went to work for her that summer
A teenage kid so far from home
She was a lonely widow woman
Hell-bent to make it on her own
We were a thousand miles from nowhere
Wheat fields as far as I could see
Both needing something from each other
Not knowing yet what that might be.
'Til she came to me one evening
Hot cup of coffee and a smile
In a dress that I was certain
She hadn't worn in quite a while
There was a difference in her laughter
There was a softness in her eyes
And on the air there was a hunger
Even a boy could recognize.
She had a need to feel the thunder
To chase the lightning from the sky
To watch a storm with all its wonder
Raging in her lover's eyes
Unsurprisingly, I had to listen to this song about being exploited at work while being exploited at work.
Kids today are insane. A set of women with whom you never had a shot in past has decided to put you on the "will potentially sleep with" list, and you see this as a negative. I fear for our country.
Have we reached a procedure for the pictures with labs quandary?
#8 (and ogged most likely) -
the correct word for Jolie would be 'sultry'. From merriam-webster online:
Sultry -
2 a : hot with passion or anger b : exciting or capable of exciting strong sexual desire
I watched her hands of leather turn to velvet in a touch; and there's never been another summer when I ever learned so much.
Ben, I do not know the status of that. I'm confused about where these pictures are, where they will be, and who will see them.
But no one does or ever has said "Yes, she was raped, and therefore she's a slut."
Actually, in places where "the woman's honor" is important and the Virgin/Mother/whore alternatives are the only ones, women who are raped are always suspect because they didn't fight hard enough. Within the world of Islam especially, but also elsewhere.
I think that "slut" usually means a woman with low self-esteem who is willing to be used. Maybe it means unscrupulous sexually-aggressive women too, but I think that when it's used this way, the idea is to accuse sexually-aggressive women of having low self-esteem and being willing to be used. "Skank" seems to mean an unattractive slut with additional personal problems.
which bars in Pasadena are known as cougar bars
Jesus Christ, where were these bars when I was in college? I'd have been all over that.
96.--Oh, sorry, I'll get around to posting those this afternoon. Chopper very kindly photoshopped the Ayatollah onto the Gay, if you know what I mean.
They were in Pasadena, apostropher, and you were in North Carolina.
Can someone send me the photoshop? It sounds hilarious.
FL, aren't you on the Flickr group? There already are a couple of photos of you with the Ayatollah's head (and Bérubé's). I'll send you an invite.
Is there any way today's games will compare to the Romo-tastrophe? I have money in Vegas on the Pats to win the Super Bowl at 6-1 so have a certain loyalty.
I also have the NYG at 50-1 to win the Super Bowl, but that's just pathetic.
Thanks, JM; no one had invited me. I'll just sit here in the dark, sobbing.
Check your email, foolio, and come into the light.
Those are awesome photos, but none are of me. Am I at the right group?
Oh, yes, if I had checked my flickr inbox...
Many of the ones of you that Armsmasher and Stanley had were removed—at your request.
I have money in Vegas on the Pats to win the Super Bowl at 6-1 so have a certain loyalty.
Love Belichick, but I don't see that happening.
Did I say that? I just wanted to look at them first.
FL: email me (link below), and I'll send them on. My plan was to send them to Chopper for (in)appropriate head replacement. That is, Chopper is going to give you head, if you approve.
I just posted the beChoppered photos of you to the group pool, FL you little narcissist.
What is with the referee's pants? Did I miss when they started looking like waiters?
There's your Romo-esque play for you, NL.
I had forgotten that lap dance. Ben never will, I fear.
Actually, I had forgotten it too.
Anyone else rooting for the Iggles?
In 7th grade I went to a girls' school, and in a study hall overseen by a popular biology teacher (a man) some 8th grade girls were discussing someone not present and referred to her as a slut. I had never heard the word before. The teacher paused the study hall to give a little discourse on the inappropriateness of this word--how it was a way of cruel rumor mongering, using a label for shorthand to imply all kinds of other actions without speficity or verifiability, and passing judgement on people's personal lives without real knowledge. But, more importantly, he said that as denizens of a feminist institution we should abhor using such a word asymmetrically. I'm probably the only person who took him seriously. I use the word symetrically, and only in angry, private rants with friends where it really is shorthand for actions already carefully enumerated and understood, not a generic label. And I do not mean "easy" as in. . so and so should be having less sex, says I, the matron. I use it to angrily refer to people who engage in sex or sexual acts regardless of how self or other-destructive those acts are, because they place more value on their ability to set those acts up/enjoy them then on the feelings of others or the havoc they are wrecking on their own lives. I use it in a specific sexual context because it applies to personalities who use the cover of everyone being so worried about being judgemental about sex to forestall any consequences or criticism. They use the fact that educated, liberal people are worried about being seen as prudes to cover up the fact that people do have special feelings about sex, and sex is uniquely powerful in human relations. Instead of being more prudent around this powerful aspect of human life, they are less prudent, because if anyone calls them on their cruelty or self-destructiveness, they can shame them into silence by calling them puritanical. This pisses me off, b/c the real problem is the cruelty. So in anger I frequently note that there is a tiny grain of truth at the root of our tiptoeing around sex, and if people are stressed out about it, it's precisely b/c of selfish, malicious, or reckless people like these. They are the original sluts.
I know more guys than women, so I end up using it about guys more.
I would not, however, say that these private rants consist of polite company---the density of curse words in my speech usually goes up by a factor of 5 or 6.
I am totally baffled by the notion of applying such discussions to celebrities.
But I'm also the only person I know who is immune to both Jolie's looks (fine, not fantastic, to me) and alleged intimidation factor.
My only way to generate personal NFL loyalty is to place wagers. So sadly I must pull for Eli and Plizzaxico.
120 -- Iggles, w00t. Partially because of all the rumor and innuendo about Jeff Garcia being teh ghey, which just makes me want to root for him more. Partially because I hates the Tom Coughlin.
Although this game is shaping up to be pretty boring. Three drives that start from the 50 and go backwards? Bleh.
Scrunchies? No, no, no. What you need is the Silicone Beauty Brush, which will "exfoliate redundant horniness" and "retrieve glowing and gentle skin", but most importantly, "wash face with the brush can save face cleaning milk".
Iggles here too. But only because the Broncos didn't make it in.
Westbr00k!! He will not be denied. I assume some of you are watching this game too?
I'm looking forward to the offense-vs-defense matchup of Colts at Ravens, next week.
offense-vs-defense matchup of Colts at Ravens
Ravens 38-17.
I'm sort of watching; more like running back and forth between watching and commenting. The TV's at the other end of the house.
Mmm... I root against Brian Billick and Ray Lewis on principle. Colts, 24-14.
Ygglz is rooting for the Giants. For once, we're rooting for the same team. But I have no stakes in the playoffs now.
Come back after the big plays. Also, time to get wireless -- laptop-in-front-of-the-tv is the perfect way to think you're going to get work done while watching football. "Work" ends up being "trolling unfogged."
Sheldon!
There are games today? I thought everyone was just getting pumped for tomorrow.
'smasher, were you on the Romo-bandwagon?
Now that I realize that Brian Westbrook and Michael Westbrook aren't the same person, I'm enjoying that run even more. Athlete.
What I don't understand is why they don't broadcast the entire game from the camera-that-floats-above-the-field. Tres video game -- the side-view is a holdover from an older and more naive age.
Goddamn, but Eli is incapable of learning how to be a pro quarterback.
Also: Tony Romo: can you say rollercoaster? What a year that guy had.
One wonders how Carrie Underwood comforted him.
I still have a soft spot in my heart for Bledsoe. I was kinda hoping they'd pull Romo and put in Drew at the end... seeing him on the sidelines made me glum.
I still have a soft spot in my heart for Bledsoe.
After taking the hit that sheared the artery in his chest, Bledsoe probably does, too.
I think they should put in Drew to take the snaps on field goals. I do heart Romo.
I wish Eli would grow a beard or something.
Maybe he can't?
Steven Colbert stole his screaming eagle straight from the tat on Shockey's arm.
Did anyone else see the clips of Peyton playing football as a child during the Colts game yesterday?
They've played those before this season.
Yes! Apparently he's always been a little whiner.
I guess.
I've always thought of Peyton Manning as kind of the Al Gore of football.
Jeff!!1!
149 was written before I saw 148, just to be clear.
What's Philly singing? They have a song?
I was wondering the same thing -- football is slowly approaching the crowd-standard set by European football.
"Fly, Eagles, Fly" says a Philly friend.
... and then they run a draw?
Blah. Time to go buy more Tostitos.
I'm on dialup, yo. Not much point to wireless.
I should go buy some more salsa.
Salsa can't be bought, it can only be created by passion on the dance floor.
Something I have just now learned: Whole Foods organic salsa == teh suck. Way, way too watery.
The hefty lefty! The round mound of touchdown! JARED LORENZEN!
I can't stop staring at Plaxico. What a weird and awesome physique. Is his neck longer than Merton Hanks'?
The Giants just need to let Philly score RIGHT NOW. I don't know why football coaches don't get that. They cannot stop Philly, and the clock will run out. (Last football comment)
Did you know Merton Hanks is now an NFL official? Gotta love his Wikipedia quote -- "what a lame claim to fame that is."
Nice kick, btw.
Hopefully, this will be the last we see of Tom Coughlin in the pros for a while. Maybe he can go yell at some college kids for a couple of years.
Getting fired is, apparently, the final axiom of football.
What we must be all about right now, immediately, is the restoration of pride; self pride, team pride, the restoration of our professionalism and the dignity of which we conduct our business. We must restore our belief in the process by which we will win. We must replace despair with hope and return the energy and the passion to New York Giant football.
From a technical standpoint we must begin to focus immediately on the basic axioms which determine winning in the National Football League. Effort is the key to success. Consistent application of each individual, each individual's best in the task at hand. Outstanding effort must exist on many levels. It starts with the off-season program. It starts in the spring, carries through the summer to the practice field and training camp and of course to game day. Football is fundamentally a physical game. It is a tough game played by tough people. We must win the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. We must run the ball and we must be able to defend the run. The year off that I have experienced allowed me to make many observations, one of which is - more games are lost in this league than are won. We must eliminate turnovers.
"Polite society" *never* called anyone a slut. Polite society doesn't recognize sluts, and never did.
But if you meant that we know better now than to think that way, try doing a post about Paris Hilton and see what happens.
I'm late to the party on this one, but it's inappropriate to call Jolie a slut because she's had approximately four sexual relationships in the last ten years.
Around here, that's slutty -- unless you married a succession of cops killed in the line of duty, and only if you waited a full year in between before even dating.
167: She was quoted fairly recently (just pre-Brad) that she has a number of friends with benefits, so that number sounds low to me.
So -- 93 yd runback? And now it's 7-7. At least I'm not stuck with watery salsa, this time around.
And the opening Ohio St. drive is pretty much a disaster -- maybe I need to rethink my "Florida is going to get crushed" stance.
I certainly hope so. Nice coupla moves that Pittman (?) put on at least one or two Florida players.
I root against Fla on principle, and I feel sorta sports-queasy at the moment.
Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water...
I can't get a handle on this game. I feel like Fla should be up by more than 7.
Gonzalez has a 4.0 in philosphy and is on a major team?! Either OSU has a very weak philospohy program or he is pretty good.
I note he wants to go to Stanford. Sorry Ben, he wants to go to the law school.
4th and 1 on their own 30, and they go for it?? And they don't make it? Holy shit.
I liked the going for it. I was impressed by Florida's defensive push. OSU could not push through that scrum.
I know they only "settled" for a field goal, but ... game over man, game over. The dishes are done. OSU will need a collective brain transplant in the locker room, if they're going to come back from in this one.
Yeah, this is over. I can't believe OSU is playing this poorly.
Utterly insane. 20 points down at the half? Who knew that Ted Ginn Jr. was the sum-total of the OSU offense? Unless this hail-mary at the end of the half works...
A smack-down of epic proportions. I love the crowd shots of the Florida fans -- never have so few done so much for so many toolz.
This was a horrible waste of time.
