Aw, bummer. I'm out of town all next week.
What is the Emir from yon distant lands willing to bring us in exchange? Frankincense? I could really use some Frankincense.
If I recall correctly, Emir's faraway land is more known for its exports of beer and wool. What do you have against beer and wool, mike d?
Have you ever smelled beer-soaked wool? That's why I need the Frankincense.
Maybe we can hook you up with some Patchouli.
Which is why I need Frankincense (scroll down to "colds").

Now I remember emir. Hasn't been around much lately, have they?
How come no Fargo meetups? I could go to one of those.
Beer and wool...you know, there aren't many countries that fit both of those qualifications. Poland?
How many countries have sheep but no beer? I'd think it was more unspecific than overspecified.
How many countries have sheep but no beer?
Several Muslim ones, I suppose.
Good point. And with a name like 'emir' things could get confusing.
Chopper, me, and Lileks.
New Zealand in spades. Maybe Australia, Scotland, and Ireland.
14: Pretty much all of northern and eastern Europe.
Hey guys, looks like I could come! Is there going to be a meeting of minds? Will it be at that Donleavian place on 36th Ave?
Not that many countries export beer. Not New Zealand.
Steinlager is not a trad NZ beer. It was launched in ~1955 and the name has no reference. I like it, though.
Hey you guys should all drop by Stanley's place and leave him happy birthday wishes. Whilst he is out getting debauched.
Yep, Jackmormon remembers me rightly, I think she was partly responsible for my handle, I had commented a couple of times as "emr" and then came the Great Renaming of Ought Six when unmemorable clumps of initials were swept away.
My land used to also export lots of its people ... the boot is on the other foot these days, actually. I don't much resemble an eastern potentate, either.
Anyway I have hardly been online at all the last few days since I left home, it's actually hard to find the time to go to an internet cafe and there aren't any close to my hotel. In Kinko's at the moment. No-wheel mouse driving me crazy.
Would be delighted to meet whoever is around, just let me know where the Lawyers Guns and Money meet up takes place and if say JM is going to be there I can email her with carnation-in-buttonhole type details.
I'm afraid I won't be able to make it tomorrow. But have much fun and merriment!
Ok, Emir, I am just about the worst person on this forum to rely on plans-making with. I'm 85% certain that I'm coming out tomorrow night at, um, 7pm? I'm female, will be wearing dark-rimmed glasses and a long black wool coat, and, what else? I'm fidgety. I'll be in the back room, probably with Scott LeMieux (sp?), who is a somewhat larger person than I and has a nicely booming voice. You should identify yourself either by wearing a chysanthemum in your lapel or by declaring "knives out, mother-fuckers!"
Why the binary approach -- he could do both, surely?
I will be in the same place as Jackmormon with a similar degree of probability. I have short greying hair and a straggly beard, and wire-rimmed spectacles.
("in the same place as" s/b "close by")
Actually, Scott's at the GingerMan all the time, and I think knows most to all of the waitresses. So asking anyone who works there for Scott should find him, and therefore everyone else.
And then say "knives out, mother-fuckers!"
how come all you clownish motherfuckas never want to have a meetup in SE Asia? unfoggeDBangkok would kick ass.
I'll go to SE Asia just as soon as I have a ton of money.
despite the complete lack of exotic spices, i'll try to swing by tomorrow.
and my vote is that the next meet-up should be in Queens.
going to SE asia isn't as expensive as you think, ben. you're young and healthy; you can stay in backpacker hostels. the $6 a day ones are kind of nasty, but you can spend just a little more and get a really nice place. they often have super-cheap air tickets. like try eva air, the taiwanese budget airline. and you can stay with me in singapore for freeeeeeee. you gotta bring your own weed, though.*
*don't actually do this.
Happy our birthdays everyone. See you tonight.
Lso don't really bring chewing gum into Singapore. Singapore has an amazingly long list of capital crimes.
Right, see whoever there tonight - will be there sometime between 7 and 8, I hope. My grasp of how long it takes to get from A to B in this town not great.
Nine more! Before anyone notices!
emerson, it's not illegal to bring gum into singapore for personal use; it's just illegal to import it for sale in your mini-mart. singapore is not as insane as popularly believed, and the streets are astoundingly clean, way cleaner than any us city 've been to except maybe East Hampton. OTOH, a propos of apo's thread, they have piss-tested hs/college-age singaporeans returning fr4om abroad and gotten them in trouble for smoking pot while in another country. I imagine they still hold to the drugs-as-proxy-for-unwelcome-politics model.
Nice to
Happy trails, all!
(Nicholas) -- ok, that's all for me, for a little while. Back to work!
Hey New Yorkers, mark your calendars; on March 21st, Stanley's band will be playing at Vonnegut-themed club Goodbye Blue Monda, in Williamsburg. Also they are playing at most other population centers east of the Rockies, check Stanley's site for tour dates.
(The club is of course called Goodbye Blue Monday, and it is in Bushwick, not Williamsburg.
Thanks to all for turning out on a Monday night, it was a lot of fun. Also thanks to Scott for interesting N. American beer suggestions, everyone for the gossip, JM and her sweetie for subway guidance to my onward destination, and particular thanks to Becks for emailing etc. to set this up.
