When I was in high school, a regular public high school full of conservative teachers and unenlightened students who giggled about things like being gay, we watched a film on art and the Nazis, and how the Nazis didn't like gays and didn't like degenerate art, and the film showed artwork deemed acceptable to the Nazis, and we all noticed, though it escaped the notice of the Nazis, that all their statues of buff Aryan men were really really really gay.
The buzz about Sparta is exactly the same.
Speaking of 300, has anyone read any good books about homoerotica and fascist aesthetics?
Far as the Army goes, anyone who knows people serving in Iraq -- or is interested in the war generally -- really should read The Deserter's Tale. It's a harrowing glimpse at the sort of things that soldiers rarely tell civilians on the home front.
Do you like gladiator movies, Bobby?
books about homoerotica and fascist aesthetics?
Theweleit is a bit of a loon, but Male Fantasies is full of amazing material, though much more about images of women than men.
You know, aside from the costumes, I thought it was a lot, lot less gay than Return of the King. Far fewer soul-searching looks into limpid pools of blue, &c.
The positive reviews compare it to gory ballet.
6. If I had half a brain I could remember the URL of the LOTR secret diaries. Laugh out loud funny, which doesn't go at this office.
One of the presenters at our conference was both gay and an Iraq war veteran. Interesting guy.
taking on the effete, decadent elites of the HRC.
What does "HRC" mean in this context?
8: Here they are. I haven't reread them, but I remember hurting myself laughing at them when I first saw them.
6: Isn't that more a het thing? I haven't seen the movie, so can't compare them.
Yeah, it's really buff and takes great bravery to oppose the Human Rights Council. Why, it's practically the same as standing under a hail of arrows so numerous they blot out the sun!
Christ, what an idiot.

The Very Secret Diaries!
5: Yeah, I've got the Theweleit already. I'm hoping to find something a bit less heavily Freudian -- maybe a forlorn hope given the subject matter.
14: It was more about challenging the HRC's dominance as a gay rights group (or its dominance as perceived by Sullivan)--he's gay and seems to have a bit of a running feud with the HRC, and this is another installment in that.
16:Here is a book at Amazon
Here is the start of something tho I am not even sure who the author is. Discusses Wyndham Lewis & Frederic Jameson in pomo? language.
I got into this at Pandagon, need to search their archives but I did find a good article online
Thanks for the fortnightly sighting of a Wyndham Lewis reference, Bob; I'm happy now. Hope you've got more game than JM.
Hoisting Your Flags for the State here is Marcotte on Riefenstahl, mostly about misogyny & fascism
Johann Hari ...and here is an article on gay European fascists
Thanks for those links, Bob, that's helpful.
13: No, I'm thinking of Sam and Frodo's trip into Mordor. Very, very homoerotic.
Speaking of your conference, Teo, how did the boob-honking work out for you?
8: 6. If I had half a brain I could remember the URL of the LOTR secret diaries. Laugh out loud funny, which doesn't go at this office."
A shame that there isn't a search engine, in which you could drop "LOTR secret diaries" and instantly find what you were looking for.
I was so busy I didn't have time to even attempt any boob-honking. It was a highly successful conference nonetheless.

As has often been said, youth is wasted on the young.
Some of the most likely honkees are hosting their own conference in two weeks, so all is not lost. Assuming my passport arrives in time, that is.

I took that as a hint that it wasn't really worth searching for.
24. That is in fact what I did, witness 15, which was me, but thanks for the help. I do try to do other things with my day than comment here

I don't think you understand how this place works, TLL.
Hey does Sullivan fancy himself a libertarian? This would be news to me. Or is his reader just using "libertarian" in a vague way to mean "Republican, but less obviously evil"?
"Republican on drugs" and "out gay Republican" work. Evil is optional and not a decider.

I only read him very sporadically (mostly when someone links to him), but Sullivan been calling himself a "libertarian," as well as a "conservative," for years and years.
he's gay and seems to have a bit of a running feud with the HRC
The "Human Rights Champagne" is the Sierra Club of gay rights. They are often criticized for being a staid, greedy organization, only responsive to the complaints of their (largely) well-off, (largely) white, (largely) urban constituents. Marc Jacobs recently produced a line of expensive HRC commemorative t-shirts. What's funny about Sullivan's remarks is that he is exactly the HRC's kind of person.
"Libertarian", on the internet, means "conservative who likes to smoke pot."
Funny how Jim Guckert/Jeff Gannon is out of the spotlight now. Has Bush got a replacement?
