I hope it's good. DLH much stronger, but whether he's going to be able connect is up in the air.
Also, Utah up by 7! I hope they pull this off just for the absurdity of a Utah vs. Golden State round.
It's good to know there are limits to your blood lust, Ogged.
I'm Shi'a, remember? It's the Sunnis who have no limit to their bloodlust.
55 is too damn much. No dilemna for me as I have to work. Breakroom has a plasma with satellite, but I guarantee they were too cheap to buy the fight.
4: I can't keep track, you all look alike to me.
Why? When was the last time anyone thought Oscar was good?
I hear you, but spectacle, man, spectacle. (Still not worth $55 though.)
On another topic entirely, via a good blog, via AWB, this (contains naughty language).
When was the last time anyone thought Oscar was good?
Past his prime for sure, but went the distance with Mosley both times. Also, Mayorga also past his prime, but not like he's some hobo they dragged in off the street, and Oscar crushed him.
De La Hoya's gonna get wrecked, I'm thinking.
Also, all of modern-day boxing is pretty much a market failure.
Mayweather is going to beat the hell out of him. I kinda agree with Bill Simmons that this is pretty much the last big boxing match for the foreseeable future.
I'm hoping Mosley helping with De La Hoya's training will give him a chance. Pretty awesome that Mosley did that.
Another liveblog here (fight hasn't started yet).
I guess I will pick de la hoya then.
Heebie's butt pics to the winner?
An ex-convict who had fought Mayweather was hanging out on my porch a couple of summers ago. He told me stories about Las Vegas and about prison, and asked me for money. Sad.
Yes, but could Oswald Mosley subdue a Hoya?
If I'm reading this correctly, the online markets favor Mayweather about 3-2. Anyone know the official odds?
This is Lewis-Tyson all over again. DLH has no chance, it's only his lingering popularity that makes anyone think otherwise.
I do wish I'd bought the fight, though.
Odds are against Hoya. But he's still strong, and has been training with Mosley, who's every bit as quick as Mayweather. Mayweather's used to fighting lighter guys, he's not used to getting hit hard by someone like Hoya. If Hoya can land that hook, Mayweather might be in trouble.
I do wish I'd bought the fight, though.
Me too. But $55 is nuts.
Sure, there are lots of ways that Hoya could theoretically win, but I really doubt he will. I bet Mayweather controls the fight from the opening bell.
On the $55 thing, no one buys a fight (or any other PPV event) alone, right? At least I never have. A few friends gather together and split the cost. Divided among 4 or 5, $55 isn't an expensive night of entertainment at all.
I'm an L.A. native. Gotta root for the hometown guy.
Brock, the world will not exist for long in which a boxing fan can find four or five other boxing fans among the ranks of his friends. It sounds like a foreign world to me.
Well, Ned, I'm sitting at home on the couch with the television off. So point taken. But 27 describes how things are supposed to be.
29: Plenty of casual or non fans enjoy the occasional PPV fight. Anyhow as far as I can tell the problem with boxing is with the promoting and sanctioning bodies, rather than with any kind of lack of fans.
This conversation has taken a depressing turn. What's wrong with this country?
Yup.
I personally am very excited for the day when the best boxing prospects in the ghetto train BJJ and Muay Thai instead. That's gonna make for some awesome MMA fighters.
Beefo Meaty: Objectively pro minority bloodsport.
And proud of it!
Beefo Meaty: Objectively pro marginally reduced rates of early-onset alzheimers among disadvanaged youth.
Beefo Meaty: ALSO objectively pro FLYING KNEES TO THE HEAD!
I see no contradiction.
the day when the best boxing prospects in the ghetto train BJJ and Muay Thai instead
instead of playing football?
objectively pro FLYING KNEES TO THE HEAD!
Word.
From the liveblog, "Mayweather is on his way to the ring wearing a sombrero. "
(Since this seems to be the sports thread.)
Boxing will only be over when Bert Sugar dies. If he keels over in the post-fight commentary after saying it was a great fight, and now he can die happy, I WIN.
The prize was a hat, you mean?
43 -> 40, and separately -> 39
40: Tyson.
37: Football tends to be much less of a presence in actual urban environments; boxing or other martial arts can be practiced anywhere. I'm sure the top end of athletic kids will aim towards football or basketball, but there's always a market for learning how to fight in shitty neighborhoods. Plus, you can be a 5'6" lightweight in MMA, pro football not so much.
First round to Mayweather, second to de la Hoya.
Rounds 3 and 4 to de la Hoya (says these guys, anyway)!
Streaming feed of the fight.
mms://wmlivegeo.bbc.net.uk/wms/radio5/5Live_s1
So does the BBC: "the champion is bossing this at the moment - Mayweather not really in it"
Mayweather landed some hard shots in round 5.
But according to the radio (thanks, gswift!) Mayweather is now kicking his ass.
And this basketball game is intense too. Geez.
Thanks gswift. How is this free streaming feed permitted by HBO?
I don't know, but my connection just wigged out. Aaaargh.
I'm sure the fact that the stream isn't American has something to do with it. Mine's still up.
Maybe it's a Mac thing, but mine never connected. Sad.
jabs from DLH! Suddenly getting through!
Why is Mayweather letting the man go forward like this, easing his way back into the contest????
Logged out of my computer, logged back in, and it's back!
The radio guys love Mayweather, but their blogger has De La Hoya leading.
mayweather confident enough to hold left hand down by his waist! DLH being hurt in this round! DLH does really weak jab!
Shit, sounds like Hoya's going to go down.
Boy that BBC play-by-play guy is no kind of Mayweather fan, is he?
Look at the BBC blog. Totally different story. "Mayweather really has to start taking some risks here and he lands with some clean pot-shots from range. De la Hoya swarms all over Mayweather in the corner and Floyd emerges from the exchange with a beaming smile. He's kidding no-one, he's in trouble as far as I'm concerned."
Defensively and in attach, this has been terrific work from Mayweather ! Dominating from close range, mid range and long range! DLH having most success with jab, but not in this round.
Mayweather much the sharper, much the more buoyant!
"DLH wandering around as if to ask MAyweather, "Can I play too?""
wow, that blog is really different from the broadcast.
The radio guy is going to gay marry Mayweather.
Mayweather is dominant to the head! Dominant to the body! Dominant from long range and from midrange! Beautiful masterful exponent of the beautiful art!
DLH is leaning in and wondering what to do! Wondering where to go, because Mayweather has been so elusive!
Another jab from DLH lands on the head!
Mayweather becoimes foolish on the ropes! DLH gets in at the end!
DLH's arms are looking leaden! This is the first time I have ever heard anyone say the word "leaden" in my life! 2 men pounding away at close quarters! ATM!
Referee has hardly been involved, throughout the fight!
The radio guy is going to gay marry Mayweather.
No shit.
DLH pounds away but is met with only a smile! DLH 4 or 5 punch combination! Mayweather takes it well!
DLH wins final round despite being about to fall over, because Mayweather didn't do anything, because he knew he would win!
Stop calling me Shirley, radio guy.
The BBC blogger calls it a draw. The radio color guy has it 117-111 Mayweather. Wow.
BBC Radio Guy: I'd like to narrate Mayweather having his way with my girlfriend. He would be amazing.
Boy, that was one of the closest fights I've ever not watched.
God don't make no mistakes. That's why I'm 6-time world champion in 6, 5 weight classes.
The BBC guy actually said that Mayweather could have knocked out De La Hoya, but didn't, out of respect. Unbelievable.
Yeah, give me a break. So much for Mayweather's "massacre".
Because Mayweather shows so much respect. Good call there.
For some reason it wasn't the night of the jab.
That's just how gentlemanly these boxers are.
He literally jabbed Oscar De La Hoya's head off, he was that quick.
Ok, I've had enough of the radio guys.
If you stopped listening to the radio broadcast, you missed out on hearing about Annie Liebovitz's new photo of the Queen, and the new rubbish-abatement mascots, not to mention the girl in Luton whose school doesn't like her abaya.
Whoa, De La Hoya made $25 million from this fight?
So, boxing... it works like this?: people beat on each other until someone gets knocked out, can't get up, or the judges decide who they think won. Is the strategy to beat on the other person until you have a good shot at knocking them out?
103: While keeping them from beating on you, yes, pretty much.
103: Think Godzilla Two behemoths clumsily whack at each other until one of them is in position to use his radiation breath.
Yeah, the money was colossal for this. And he was the dog!
So it's an endurance thing?
Different fighters have different strategies. The harder you can punch, the more likely you are to try to knock the other guy out (so less of an endurance thing). If you're not much of a knock out artist, or fighting someone who rarely goes down, you'll opt for hitting him with more clean shots to win on points (so more of an endurance thing).
Of great import in boxing is the quality of one's chin, as in "he's got a great chin," meaning he can take a lot of punches, and thus be still around to clobber you when you get tired of trying to knock him out.
Also, in non-heavyweight fights like this one, it's somewhat unlikely for the fight to end in a knockout: the fighters generally don't have enough strength to knock somebody out unless they get a lucky shot.
It's an endurance thing, but there's also a lot of skill involved that's hard to see if you aren't used to it.
there's also a lot of skill involved
Oh, I thought that was a given. Yeah, it's night and day even between great boxers and decent boxers; they're amazing.
You know what was kind of a good movie for the non-boxing fan that nonetheless taught a li'l bit about boxing strategy was When we were Kings.
I didn't see the Black Dahlia movie and don't know enough about boxing to say this at all authoritatively, but the small part of the Black Dahlia book which described boxing strategically seemed to do a very good job of it.
Well, fucking fuck. They were streaming that fight? And I had to go to the fucking symphony?
Drunk guys at the deli where I stopped for gatorade on the way home: "ALWAYS BET ON BLACK, BABY! Do I get a free slice for being down with the black man?"
They were streaming that fight?
Just on the radio, and the BBC guys were totally in the tank for Mayweather, so don't feel too bad.
Whew. That does take the edge off my disappointment.
Do you know what I had tonight? Candy cigarrettes. Would you believe they still make those?
121: No, and yes, respectively.
120: Damn racist convenience store clerk.
121: I see the around on occasion, and I am always shocked.
De La Hoya should have had the decision. De La Hoya had the belt; he was the champion. It was up to Mayweather to be aggressive, to _challenge_ to champion, but De La Hoya was the one occupying the center of the ring and pushing forward. Mayweather fights like an amateur boxer: light, fast, accurate shots which would accrue points in an Olympic bout and make you look good in CompuBox stats, but which don't actually punish the opponent. His is a beautiful but ultimately defensive style--a style for a champion, not a challenger. Plus, he's an arrogant wife beater.
Hm, next time I'll reread what I write before I post it. Enough typos and incomprehensibility to make Matt Yglesias blush.
Plus, he's an arrogant wife beater.
I seem to recall that the same charge was lobbed at Oscar a couple of years ago.
Come on, these are professional beaters who happen to be married.
I really shouldn't make domestic violence jokes. I disapprove of domestic violence! I hope those guys go to jail and get raped!
Nice. I was going to write "They train at home," but then I thought, I have my limits.
Domestic violence: save it for the ring.
Jailhouse rape: save it for the...
geez where was I going with that?
130 to 128. But that's only if you're going to be all sensitive and shit.
The last part of 128 was a meta-joke Becks; if you weren't accidentally on drugs, you probably would have caught that.
Crap. Coming off of mega-doses of Sudafed - insane!
That's my excuse, at least.
I have little to say beyond:
Fuck:
A)$55
and
b)Split Decsions
Jesus H.
Brain damage in real time. I can't watch.
136: I think your crayon needs to be shoved farther in.
109: I read somewhere (damn you, useless google!) a few years ago that some medical researchers discovered that the "glass jaw" phenomenon was a lot more physiological than previously believed: that the bone structures in very many people's jaws are actually slightly misaligned, which causes a much greater proportion of the force involved in any blow to the jaw to transfer right through to the brain. Whereas a well-aligned jaw absorbs much of the blow.
I guess people suspected something like this for a long time, but it was still interesting to read confirmation of and details on the biomechanics.
Also, that fight was staged. Mayweather took an extra few million under the table to leave De La Hoya standing. You heard it here first.
ALWAYS BET ON BLACK, BABY!
Not always, but generally. White guys seem to cut more easily. I'm not sure why that is.
Mayweather Sr: "I thought Oscar won the fight on points, threw more punches and was more aggressive," said the senior Mayweather, who munched popcorn as he watched the fight from a $2,000 ringside seat given to him by De La Hoya. "My son had good defense and caught a lot of his punches, but I still thought Oscar pressed enough to win the fight."
The relationship of Mayweather Sr. to both of these fighters is very complicated.
Merryweather may have won the battle, but it looks like
De La Hoya will win the war.
113: Well, the movie didn't. It also sucked in every other way.
From France, looks like no pilf. (Unless Sarkozy turns you on, of course. There's always lots of pilfs for straight women and gay dudes. Life isn't fair).
Presumably she'll have more free time now. This Ségo thing could work out for you yet, John.
She only turns me on if she's in power.
There's always Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf.
I'll probably just ring up Scarlett and see what she's up to. Hopefully she doesn't know about me and Ségo. I'd hate to see a catfight.
I hear Benazir might be running again.
If you Google-image "Pinky Bhutto" you get the picture of Ségo in her bikini and baseball cap, courtesy of the recent thread here.
And thanks to that thread, a Google search for "Pinky Bhutto" and "pilf" yields a result. You're making a real difference, John.
Here's a guy with a serious crush on Ségo.
You know what they call a quarter-pounder with cheese in Paris?
More pilfs. Tansu Ciller is the champ, despite her ice-princess look.
It seems not everyone likes hotlinking either.
Hey look, here's the whole fight, if you want to see it. You should probably move quickly.
Even if you google Benazir only you will find her very private pic in a completely see through lingerie.
