God, now I hate Fred Phelps even more for making me feel bad for Jerry Falwell.
Then again, as soon as I hit "post" I said out loud to Mr. B., "Fred Phelps is going to protest Jerry Falwell's funeral," then paused for a second, and suddenly found myself cracking up.
So I guess I'm right there with you, Apo.
That's what Falwell gets for being such a strong supporter of gay rights.
Oh, this is total nonsense. I'm glad it's been ignored lately.
Oh, this is total nonsense.
The awesomeness of which you might have momentarily forgotten. Like grapefruit.
That is TEH AWESOME!!11!!.
As the young people would say. I think.
But is he really protesting or just trying to do the MLK->Jesse thing?
Three words: Satanic Sodomite Zeitgeist.
Great name for a band.
8: Yeho, you took the words right out of my mouth.
I'd be willing to give up being an atheist if Fred Phelps and his ilk were smitten, oh, with lightening or a meteorite or even frozen detritus from the pissoir of an airplane. Any deity who would do that is one I could get behind.
I find the I-am-Christianer-than-thou stance amusing. Proverbs 16:18...
I find the I-am-Christianer-than-thou stance amusing
Has an antique quality to me. As he's mostly a thorn in the side of the right, his little bit of surviving sectarianism feels like a valuable piece of Americana. I wonder if somebody finds him apostate, and too compromised?
The wiki page on Phelps and on the WBC is really interesting.
What's even more interesting than the Wiki page is the long piece, turned to a book, written on Phelps by a Kansas City reporter. The paper spiked the piece because nobody in Kansas City fucks with Phelps (as the book explains). The author tried to release it as a book, but the paper refused, saying they owned the work and they could squelch it if they wanted to. The author sued, which caused the manuscript to be entered into court as evidence. The evidence was put under seal a week later, but not before the anti-Phelps underground got a copy and typed it in. And here it is for your reading enjoyment.
Phelps is a much worse person than you know. The book is riveting.
12: He's a former drug addict, a child abuser and exploiter, and has been disbarred in state and federal court for his nuisance lawsuits. I think he's too compromised.
nobody in Kansas City fucks with Phelps
This I find genuinely astonishing. I've always thought that he was so far out on the lunatic fringe that he was fair game for anybody.
I may be an even worse person than Apo, because I can't help thinking that it would be the most delicious icing on the cake of hypocrisy if a violent confrontation erupted between the Falwell and Phelps camps.
I may be an even worse person than Apo
I'm not sure I've ever heard this before.
Well, Hitler may have been an even worse person than apo.
Hitler was so bad, we would not accept him into the Satanic Sodomite Zeitgeist. Even after he asked us repeatedly. We have our standards, after all.
Apo, however, would be welcome in our ranks.
Falwell sold his soul to Free-Willyism! Isn't that a hellishly heart-warming story for the whole family?
There's also a BBC documentary on the Phelps clan, featuring Louis Theroux. It shows how cultlike the whole thing is--the members of the family have few social connections with outsiders, and no one in the younger generation is planning to marry. It's both interesting and disturbing. Parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
The manuscript linked by neil is detailed and fascinating and tragic and monstrous. I've read it before; I probably can't bring myself to read it again.
And the hits just keep coming:

WBC has a "parody" song, "God Hates the World," on its website. Warner music is claiming infringement; they will soon find out why no one fucks with the Crypt Keeper and family. If you think Paramount and Disney are litigious, you ain't seen nothin'.
I liked the corpulent false prophet shot by the closeted self hating homosexual Phelps. It was kind of funny.
