I bought this as a birthday present for my dad after hearing an interview with one of the producers on NPR. I'm now seriously considering keeping it for myself.
Heh, I posted about it mainly because I thought it would make a great present for a lot of people.
The Wire would be a lot of fun to go see each week in a theater.
Dude!
Is the linked series the one with the ant zombie fungus?
"Dude!" is sometimes an expression of approbation.
This post utilizes the notion of "guilt" in a way I have rarely, if ever, before encountered.

hey, come on, it's not so strange.
we have an obligation to all beautiful things to appreciate them at their beautiful best.
viewing them under any unflattering conditions is an injustice, to the beautiful thing, that we are guilty of, and so should feel guilty for, whether we do it willfully or just negligently.
i'm with ogged on this one.
i still ain't buying no fancy tv, but that's a different issue.
I posted about it mainly because I thought it would make a great present for a lot of people.
So when are you buying it for me?
Yeah, it's been shown on the BBC. Some of the footage is genuinely spectacular.
I watched that when it aired last week (month?), and it's well worth the price. I especially like the behind-the-scenes footage about, for example, filming tracking shots of millions of roaches climbing a 15-story-tall tower of dung. Impressive.

Any resemblance to recent events in SEK's life was purely coincidental. Or so the mullahs would have you believe.
There's a theater chainlet in Austin that not only hosts weekly group viewings of popular TV series on the big screen, but also serves good food and alcohol while you watch. I've never gone (to any of the TV things, I go to see movies there all the time), and I'm not sure if they've done The Wire, but I always thought it was a brilliant idea.

Things that trigger Jackmormon nightmares are only to be posted on apostropher's site.
20: Oh, come on. There are lots of posts about politics here on unfogged.
I knew I could get you to blog here.
You knew you could get me to what where?
If more theaters go to digital projection there will probably be more showings of shot-for-TV stuff. Converting to film is a huge hassle.
I watched this on the Discovery channel, and Ogged's right: it's gorgeous. However, that version has Sigourney Weaver narrating; the BBC original version features David Attenborough, voice of oh-so-many nature specials of my youth. No contest, frankly; plus Weaver says "fish" in a way that really bugs me.
Lemme guess, she says /g
24 reminded me -- have any of you seen any of the Met opera HD simulcasts? Even a person only mildly interested in opera would find them awesomely awesome, I think.
How about loser buys?
My momma taught me that gambling is sinful.
9 minutes and 45 seconds or so in: The reason I am forswearing ever being in the ocean again.
re: 24
Of course, something like Planet Earth is largely shot on film, then converted over later for TV broadcast. So I presume it wouldn't be impossible to create a cinema release.
4: That's the 'Planet Earth' series, also narrated by Attenborough. (Zombie ants here.)
19: If Alamo Drafthouse starts showing The Wire, I'm going to quit my job and move to Austin.
4: The zombie ants are my daughter's favorite part!
33: She might like Parasite Rex, by Carl Zimmer, or Zimmer's blog, The Loom. Both of them are very well-written and have all sorts of great parasite stuff.
Planet Earth is indeed a beautiful series; we watched it on the Beeb when it was broadcast there. If you like that, you may want to check out Blue Planet as well, which is slightly older but just as spectacular and is all about the oceans.
That's the 'Planet Earth' series, also narrated by Attenborough.
"Also"?
I meant that it was a different series (which, of course, it isn't). My mistake.
34: Thanks! The blog looks a wee bit over my daughter's head (she's 8) but interesting to her mom!
Ogged, I watched the trailer and think I've been sucked in for the series. My daughter has been watching with her dad and raving. I was going to let that be on of "his thing"s, but screw it. So beautiful! I think he has Sigourney Weaver, thought, so maybe I won't be intruding too much... Would it be wrong to buy it in HD just in case I someday get HD?
#25: I no more want to hear Sigourney Weaver narrate a nature special than I want to see Sir David Attenborough battle space aliens.
Would it be wrong to buy it in HD just in case I someday get HD?
No, because in 5-10 years everyone will have HD, even you.
#39: (hushed voice) "And this is absolutely fascinating. After the queen has laid her eggs, they lie here, dormant, for as long as a hundred years, until a suitable host happens to wander past. Let's just take a closer look. AAAUUURRGHH."
