I saw that same woman coming out of Victoria Secret this weekend. It struck me as odd.
You think Muslims don't like nice underwear? Oppressor.
I knew someone was going to go to the same place as 3. It would not have surprised me at all in the lingere department of a nice department store but Victoria's Secret, of late, has a distinctly slutty vibe. It was a definite contrast next to the mannequin crouched on all fours with her butt in the air wearing a hot pink lace thong.
A female friend of mine who's done the Hajj, says that in women's mosques (even in Saudi), the women are often wearing short skirts, cropped t-shirts, etc. underneath the big robes. The injunction is to be modest in public, but in private or in all female gatherings, no such injunction applies.

And you were there buying? Oh, yeah...[old seventies soundtrack sounds].
I was once waited on at a state (liquor) store in Philadelphia by a teenage girl in a headscarf. It was odd.
I can't believe you people joke at this dhimmitude.
Two porn references in a row. You people...
Putting the ass in assimilation.
Putting the immolation in, too.
14: I always get the worst burning sensation when someone puts the immolation in.
As I've mentioned before, I see interpretations of "modest Muslim dress" on display in my neighborhood every day that would turn the head of even the most jaded Maxim and FHM reader.
I stopped at the only real food co-op left around here and the two women at the counter were (1) a punk rocker with huge (>1") claw-style plugs in her ears and (2) an East African woman in very modest dress with hijab.
Which co-op was that? I remember going to one in Linden Hills with my mother as a kid. Is that one still around?
Linden Hills is one of the several consumer coops. I.e. no working members. North Country Co-Op is I think the only real working-member co-op left in Minneapolis. The Linden Hills one was still around the last time I was over there 2 years ago.
Victoria's Secret to please the husband is not un-Islamic at all. Islam is among the religions allowing sexual intercourse.

Don't stop believin', Tim!
(Is Journey more properly speaking of the 70's or of the 80's? I seem to remember them getting a lot of airplay when I was in Jr. High in the early 80's, but somehow I associate them more with the 70's. All I can really remember of them besides that horrible song, is the trippy graphics on their album covers. Them and Asia.)
(Okay well I just checked their Wikipaedia entry and I remember several abominable songs of theirs.)
re: 20
Someone I know (a friend of a friend) was actually in Asia (along with a number of other similar bands). Stories of pomp rock excess are often prefixed with 'When I were in Asia ...'
Elaine Sciolino has an interesting note in her book Persian Mirrors about an all female party with a bunch of upper class Iranian women, and how amazing it was to see them throw off their robes for stunning and saucy dresses. Doesn't lingerie sell quite nicely in Iran?
I myself am fairly modest dresser in public, but I do like my fancy lingerie.
On one of the major downtown streets in Cairo, there are numerous lingerie shops. The window displays have the most slutty underwear I've ever seen -- tacky red "lace" bras and panties with cut-outs, see-through baby-dolls, etc.
